Warming oceans make it harder to forecast cyclones in Arabian Sea: IMD
- The India Meteorological Department (IMD) finds it more challenging to accurately forecast cyclones originating in the Arabian Sea compared to those in the Bay of Bengal.
- The Arabian Sea is heating up more than average due to global warming, resulting in the formation of stronger cyclones.
- The IMD's forecast for the recent cyclone Biparjoy in the Arabian Sea was less accurate compared to cyclone Mocha in the Bay of Bengal.
- Cyclones in the Bay of Bengal are better understood due to their higher frequency, while historically, fewer cyclones formed in the Arabian Sea due to colder sea surface temperatures.
- Upper atmospheric winds influence the direction of cyclones, while heat within the ocean layers affects their strength and duration. The wind component is not always fully captured in prediction models.
- Unique factors in the Arabian Sea, such as a deeper layer of warm water compared to the Bay of Bengal, make it difficult to accurately predict the intensity and movement of cyclones in advance.
- Cyclone Yaas in May 2021, Cyclone Mandous in December 2022 and Cyclone Gulab in September 2021 – all major storms in the Bay of Bengal that made landfall – followed paths predicted by the IMD at least four or more days in advance. But Biparjoy & Cyclone Tauktae (Arabian Sea) could be gauged only two days before landfall.

Good Governance example from Meghalaya
- Absenteeism and proxy teaching issues observed in Schools in the East Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya, India.
Solution:
- The East Jaintia Hills district authority developed the Teacher Attendance Monitoring System (TAMS).
- TAMS is an integrated attendance system that utilizes facial recognition, geofencing, and time recording.
- Facial recognition ensures that only the registered teacher can mark attendance.
Geofencing restricts attendance registration to within the school premises.
- TAMS successfully increased student attendance and curbed absenteeism in the district.
- The system has been tested and may be implemented across the state.

🚔 Zero FIR is like a special report card 📝 that people can use to report a crime they have seen or experienced.
🌍 It can be filed at any Police Station, no matter where the crime happened or where the person lives. 🏠
💡 The idea behind Zero FIR is to make it easy for people to report crimes without worrying about finding the right Police Station. 🚨
✍️ How does it work? 🚓
📋 When someone files a Zero FIR, they are given a special number to keep track of their report. 🆔
🏢 The Police Station that receives the Zero FIR becomes responsible for starting the investigation and taking action. 🕵️♂️
📁 If the crime happened in an area that is not under that Police Station's control, they can transfer the Zero FIR to the correct Police Station for further investigation. 🔀

The SCO's main goals are to promote cooperation in politics, trade, economy, research & technology, culture; maintain peace, security, & stability in the region; & build a new international political & economic order.
Opportunities for India
Support for circumventing land-based trade through Pakistan. Connectivity through Iran's Chabahar port & the International North South Transport Corridor.
Trade with the region while staying out of China's BRI.
Strengthening the push for ending terror safe havens
Threats to India
Perception of the SCO as an anti-West forum.
Iran & Russia facing severe sanctions.
Further strengthening of the SCO's image as anti west with induction of Belarus.
Balancing act with the Quad alliance becoming more challenging.
Overall, the induction of Iran into the SCO is a mixed bag for India. It presents both opportunities & threats. It will be important for India to carefully manage its relations with the SCO in order to max the benefits & min. the risks.

Scientific name: Gazella bennettii
IUCN Red List status: Least Concern
Habitat: Deserts, grasslands, and scrublands.
Native to Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India.
Diet: Grasses, leaves, and fruits.
Social behavior: Lives in herds of up to 20 individuals.
Reproduction: Seasonal breeder, births typically occur between December and March.
Threats: Habitat loss, hunting, and competition from livestock.
Why in News?
A man was punished under WPA, 1972 for killing Chinkara.
Other legal precedent invoked: Article 51A (g) of the Constitution had laid down that the protection of wildlife and having compassion for living creatures was a fundamental duty of the citizens.
Note: Not to be confused with Salmon bhai wala that was Blackbuck
