Antimicrobial Resistance:

Definition: Antimicrobial Resistance is the resistance acquired by any microorganism (bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasite, etc.) against antimicrobial drugs that are used to treat infections.

🦠 It occurs when a microorganism changes over time and no longer responds to medicines making infections harder to treat and increasing the risk of disease spread, severe illness and death.

🐞 Microorganisms that develop antimicrobial resistance are sometimes referred to as “SUPERBUGS”.

🇮🇳 Initiatives: (In India)
1. National Programme on AMR containment (2012) - AMR Surveillance Network.
2. AMRSN - AMR Surveillance and Research Network (2013).
3. National Action Plan on AMR (April 2017): Focus - One Health approach.
4. AMR Research & International Collaboration - ICMR along with the Research Council of Norway (RCN); ICMR along with the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), Germany.
5. Antibiotic Stewardship Program by ICMR.

🌍 Initiatives: (Globally)
1. World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW): Held annually since 2015.
2. The Global Antimicrobial Resistance and Use Surveillance System (GLASS): Launched by WHO in 2015.
