🔆Environment Basics
✓ The kyoto protocol focuses on reducing emissions of greenhouse gases to 5.2% below pre-1990 levels, whereas the Paris agreement focuses on stopping the global average temperature from rising more than 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.
✓ Unlike the kyoto protocol Paris agreement(2015/16) doesnot distinguish bw developed & developing nations.
✓ Both are legally binding. And kyoto is the world's ONLY legally binding treaty to lower GHG emmission.
✅ KYOTO :-
•6 constituents (CO2, CH4, N2O, HFCs, PFCs & SF6)
•origin in dec1997, entered to force on 16feb 2005
Ist phase - 2008-2012
2nd phase - 2021-2020
✅ Paris agreement :-
•To create an additional carbon sink of 2.5 to 3 bn tonnes of CO2 by 2022.
•NDCs under it are legally binding and get revised in every 5 years. Now will be revised in 2023.
• A fund known as capacity building initiative for transparency fund was also launched (to help non annex 1 parties to help strengthen the institutional & technical capacities for their transparent reporting of NDCs in paris agreement.
