Berndt Freitag von Loringhofen, who served at the headquarters of Guderian's 2nd Armored Group, stated after the war:

"It is no longer necessary to hold the original view that the Russians were planning a surprise attack. It soon became clear that they were preparing for defense, but did not have time to complete this preparation by the time the German invasion began. The infantry divisions were mostly concentrated near the borders, and the tanks were far in the rear. If they were going to attack, the tank units should have been placed closer to the borders."
