The US taps top Nazi hunter as lead investigator into war crimes in Ukraine

US Attorney General Merrick Garland said Tuesday the US will launch a team to help the Ukrainian authorities prosecute war crimes committed during the Russian invasion, with the effort to be headed by a renowned Nazi hunter.

Announced during a surprise visit to Ukraine, Garland said the War Crimes Accountability Team will be lead by Eli Rosenbaum, a 36-year veteran of the Justice Department who previously led US efforts to identify and deport Nazi war criminals.

Garland said that his trip to Ukraine was a show of support and pledged that war criminals would not be able to hide from their actions.

‼️ CNN Analysis: In Beijing's BRICS summit, Putin is back on the world stage

When Russian President Vladimir Putin dials into the virtual BRICS summit hosted by Beijing on Thursday, it will be his first time attending a forum with the heads of significant economies since launching an invasion of Ukraine earlier this year.

For Putin, this could offer a welcome picture: his face beamed onscreen alongside other leaders whose countries make up this acronymous grouping: China's Xi Jinping, India's Narendra Modi, Brazil's Jair Bolsonaro, and South Africa's Cyril Ramaphosa — a signal that Russia, though battered by sanctions and remonstrations for the invasion, is not alone.

It's a message that may resonate even more clearly as China and Russia, weeks before the invasion, declared their relationship to have "no limits," and as each of the BRICS leaders have avoided condemning Russia outright, even as they hold varying levels of interest in not being seen to endorse its actions — and run foul of Western friends...

Finland ‘ready to fight Russia if attacked.’

Finland’s armed forces chief, Gen Timo Kivinen, said his country is prepared for a Russian attack and would put up stiff resistance if one should occur.

Finns are motivated to fight, and the country has built up a substantial arsenal, Kivinen said in an interview. He said:

The most crucial line of defense is between one’s ears, as the war in Ukraine proves at the moment.

We have systematically developed our military defense precisely for this type of warfare that is being waged there (in Ukraine), with massive use of firepower, armored forces, and airforces.

He added:

Ukraine has been a tough bite to chew (for Russia), and so would be Finland.
