Government has exempted eligible FIIs / FPIs from tax on interest income & capital gains earned from Indian Government Securities
Earlier, foreign investors had to pay 20% withholding tax on interest income from Government bonds & 12.5% long term capital gains tax
Now, with this tax exemption, post tax returns for foreign investors improve meaningfully
This makes Indian Government bonds more attractive for FPIs
Along with RBI’s move to expand the Fully Accessible Route & remove certain FPI investment limits, the aim is clear - attract more foreign capital into Indian debt markets.
