Gold Vs Equity: The Relative Valuation Game
Key Points:
• Current Sensex/Gold ratio is 0.68x, well below the long-term average of 1.02x.
• Historically, when the ratio is below 0.80x, the next 3-year forward returns for Indian equities (Sensex) have averaged 15.62%, with a maximum of 30.64%.
• In contrast, when the ratio is very high (>1.40x), equity returns drop to just 4.95% on average.
Gold performs better when the ratio is high, but much weaker when the ratio is low.
Conclusion: At current low levels (0.68x), the chart suggests Indian equities are significantly undervalued relative to gold and have historically delivered strong forward returns from here.
