Word of the Day
Special Economic Zone (SEZ)

It is an area where businesses get special benefits and relaxed rules compared to the rest of the country
Companies that are situated in SEZs enjoy tax breaks, simpler regulations, and better infrastructure.
The aim is to attract investment, boost exports, and create jobs. SEZs act like business-friendly islands inside a country to encourage industrial growth.
Examples: GIFT SEZ (Gujarat), Noida, Hyderabad, and Chennai

Word of the Day
Unicorn

It is a startup valued at $1 billion or more

The term was first used because such companies were considered as rare as the mythical creature.

Examples: Flipkart, Paytm, and OYO before they got listed.

They are usually young tech-driven companies that grow very fast and attract huge investor funding.

But not all stay successful — many find it hard to make profits even with high valuations.

They are high-risk, high-reward businesses.

Free Trade Agreement (FTA)

It is a deal between two or more countries to make trade easier

Under an FTA, countries reduce or remove tariffs, quotas, or other barriers on the goods and services that are traded with each other.

The goal is to boost trade, and make products cheaper for consumers by increasing competition. FTAs can also be an indicator of good political relations between the countries.

Example: India has FTAs with countries like Japan, UAE, and the ASEAN nations. On 1 Oct 2025, India’s FTA with the European Free Trade Association came into force.

Word of the Day
Trade Deficit

It is when a country imports more than it exports
This means the country spends more buying from other countries than it earns by selling to them.
Example: if a country imports $100 billion worth of goods but exports only $70 billion, it has a trade deficit of $30 billion.
Similarly, if a country exports more than it imports, it is in a trade surplus.
Trade deficits can lead to weaker currencies, but they are not automatically bad. They can also mean the country has strong consumer demand or it is buying goods that help its economy grow.
India’s trade deficit stood at $26.49 billion in August 2025.
