Word of the Day

Oligopoly

An oligopoly is when a few large companies control most of the market.

This allows the companies to influence prices, and control the supply of goods or services.

Oligopolies exist because itโ€™s difficult for new companies to join that market.

Since the entire sector is dominated by a few companies, the actions of one company will impact the other companies significantly.

The telecom industry in India is an example of an oligopoly.

Note: A monopoly is when one company controls the market. A duopoly is when two companies control the market.

Bad Bank

A bad bank is a financial institution that takes over bad loans from banks.

These loans which are unlikely to be repaid are also known as non-performing assets (NPAs).

Bad banks acquire NPAs at a discounted price.

The purpose of a bad bank is to help banks clean up their balance sheets by removing NPAs.

This allows banks to focus on lending money to new borrowers and running their core operations.

Example: The National Asset Reconstruction Company Limited (NARCL) is a government-backed bad bank in India.

It takes over large NPAs from public sector banks and works on recovering them.

Greenshoe option

It is an option used during a fundraise to issue more shares than initially planned.

It is also known as the overallotment option.

If the demand during a fundraise is higher than expected, a company can issue more shares and raise additional funds.

Example: if company ABC announced a fundraise of Rs 3,000 crore, it can have an additional greenshoe option of Rs 2,000 crore.

This makes the total size of the fundraise = Rs 5,000 crore.

Open Market Operations

OMOs are activities conducted by a central bank (RBI) to control the supply of money in the economy
Central banks do this by buying and selling government bonds and securities in the open market.

OMO is usually used to control inflation.

Example: the RBI sells government bonds to banks or the public. The buyers (banks or investors) pay money to the RBI for these bonds.

This reduces the amount of cash in the banking system, which helps control inflation by reducing spending in the economy.
