Since the economic reforms of 1991, southern states like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and the newly formed Telangana have been pulling ahead. Together, they contribute about 30% of India's total GDP. That’s a big leap, especially considering these states weren’t always economic powerhouses. Telangana, for example, stands out with a per capita income nearly double the national average.

Western states like Maharashtra and Gujarat have been at the forefront for a long time. Maharashtra still holds the largest share of India’s GDP at around 13%, while Gujarat has been catching up fast, now accounting for 8.1% of the GDP. Gujarat is also one of the top states in terms of per capita income.

India’s car market is still quite underdeveloped. As of FY24, there are only 26 cars for every 1,000 people in India. Compare that to 594 per 1,000 in the US or 183 per 1,000 in China, and you see the huge growth potential. As incomes rise, there’s plenty of room for Hyundai to grow.

"The great Indian promoter sell-off"

Promoters of Indian companies—the founders and key insiders—have been offloading their stakes in a big way.
In 2024 alone, they’ve sold shares worth ₹1 lakh crore, the highest in the past five years. And if we look back a bit further, since April 2022, that figure jumps to ₹4.42 lakh crore!

📉China's Recent Rate Cuts & Stimulus Announcement - A major boost for Domestic Metal Players

🔸 China plans to lower home loan rates by 0.5% and reduce down payments for second homes to 15%, along with a stimulus package for real estate demand revival.

🔸 These moves are expected to boost domestic steel demand in China and curb exports, which have risen 70% from 2020 to 2023.

🔸 Relief for domestic metal players is likely, as Chinese exports have driven steel prices to a three-year low of ₹47,000 per tonne.

Current Account Deficit

A current account deficit indicates that a country is importing more than it exports.

It happens when a country spends more money on buying goods and services from other countries than it earns from selling its own.

It’s similar to spending more money than you earn, so the country may need to borrow or use its reserves to cover the difference.

While it’s normal for countries to have some deficit at times, having a large or ongoing deficit can raise concerns.

It indicates that the country is relying too much on foreign funds.

However, a deficit isn’t necessarily bad—countries may use external debt to fund investments that can boost growth in the long run.

Commercial Paper

Commercial paper is an unsecured, short-term debt instrument that companies use to borrow money.

The duration of commercial paper can be up to 270 days.

Instead of taking a loan from the bank, they sell these papers to investors, promising to repay with interest after a few days/months.

It was introduced in India in 1990 to allow highly rated corporates (by credit rating agencies) to have an alternate source of short-term borrowing.
