Word of the Day
Net Interest Income

Net Interest Income (NII) is the money that a bank earns from its main operations.
Banks mainly give out loans and accept deposits from customers through savings accounts, FDs, etc.
This way, the banks earn interest from customers (loans) and pay interest on the deposits (FD, RD, savings accounts, etc).
A bank’s aim is to earn higher interest on its loans than what it gives out on customer deposits.
The difference between the interest that it earns and the interest that it pays is called the ‘net interest income’.
A higher net interest income is generally considered better.

Working capital ratio:
This ratio helps investors understand a company’s liquidity.
In this we compare the company’s current assets and its current liabilities.
Current assets = assets that are within a short time period. Current liabiltiies = debt to be paid within 1 year.
Working capital ratio = (company’s current assets) / (company’s current liabilities).
Let’s say a company’s current assets (cash, inventory, bank balance) are worth Rs 2,000 cr.
And its total current liabilities (short-term debts) are worth Rs 500 cr.
So working capital ratio = 2000 / 500 = 4.
In case a company’s current liabilities are more than its current assets, it could mean the company is in trouble.
In such a case, the working capital ratio would be less than 1.
Return on Equity (ROE):

This ratio helps investors assess how effectively a company generates profit when compared to the shareholders' equity.

Return on Equity: Net Income / Shareholders' Equity.

Let's say a company's net income is Rs 300 cr, and its shareholders' equity is Rs 2,000 cr.

So, Return on Equity = 300 / 2000 = 0.15 or 15%.

This means the company generates a return of 15% on the money invested by its shareholders.

A higher ROE indicates that the company is more efficient at generating profits.

There are many such ratios in investing. In this course, we have covered some of the most common ones.
