The “Cool S”

This design is typically doodled on middle schoolers’ notebooks or spray painted on walls. The exact origin of the cool S is unknown, but it became prevalent around the early 1970s as a part of graffiti culture.

Theories about its origin include a connection to a 1970s artwork by jean-michel basquiat, where he’d draw the cool S — but no one knows exactly where the design came from.
