ups battery swap done, this is probably gonna let me run on backup power for at least 40 minutes at 400W load
and somehow it's even cheaper than a good Yuasa lead acid battery, and yet it won't lose basically all its capacity after a year or two
(let's hope the UPS can cool itself enough while inverting 400W for that long tho)

did you know that Torx 1IP (Torx Plus) screwdrivers are practically unobtanium? also, Apple uses them in their MacBooks, of course
anyway, tonight: MacBook Air M2 lid angle sensor replacement
I bought a for-parts MacBook Air off eBay with a display issue, but it apparently *also* had a lid angle sensor issue, where the lid wouldn't reliably register as being closed
sounds minor, but:
- MacBooks will, by default, turn on when the lid is opened
- even if you disable that behavior, it probably still kinda wakes the MacBook up
and so, if you don't fix it, the battery will drain itself to zero in a day or two, even if the MacBook is powered off
costs:
- new, unprogrammed lid angle sensor: US$4.49
- Torx T1 screwdriver: US$7.50

zhongfu's inane ramblings
Haha... yes...
finally got the dock for these, but unfortunately I don't usually end up in situations where I need a power bank while I'm in Singapore
it's 3d printed but it's also kind of jank (doesn't have the right resistors to trigger USB-PD output), but i don't think I'd need to use five in a single day, so it works pretty ok

upgrade #2: replaced my dying UPS batteries with another 8S LiFePO4 battery
old: 2*12V*8.5Ah = 204Wh(but realistically you can't get more than 100Wh out of it, and even then it'll permanently damage the battery)
new: 25.6V*15Ah = 384Wh(and you could probably get over 90% of the energy out)
I miscalculated and it was like, 8mm too tall to fit inside the UPS, so it's gonna have to sit outside

next up, water heater switch using one of these 20A double pole switches
the plastic button itself is a bit flimsy though, i accidentally cracked one side off while trying to maneuver it into the gang box... let's hope the super glue works, I guess
