wrote some shit in Home Assistant to parse tariff rates from TNB (especially the per-kWh "AFA" offset that changes monthly), and calculate the total bill amount for this month in real time
but the tariff structure isn't really progressive, which can lead to odd behavior for the "savings" number
for domestic, non-time-of-use consumers, the tariff structure is like this:
- energy cost: 0.2703 MYR/kWh if total usage <= 1500kWh, else 0.3703 MYR/kWh (on EVERY kWh)
- capacity charge: 0.0455 MYR/kWh
- network charge: 0.1285 MYR/kWh
- energy efficiency incentive: in tiers ranging from -0.25 MYR/kWh to -0.005 MYR/kWh (on EVERY kWh) if consumption is <= 1000kWh
- automatic fuel adjustment: varies from month to month, currently -0.0145 MYR/kWh (on EVERY kWh) if consumption is > 600 kWh
- retail charge: 10 MYR if total usage > 600kWh, else 0
- service tax: 8% on all charges that apply after 600kWh (i.e. energy/capacity/network/EEI/AFA charges on the 601st kWh onward, plus retail charge)
- RE fund fee: 1.6% on all gross energy charges (excl. AFA/retail charge)
this means that using 451kWh can cost you RM10+ more than using 450kWh in a month, despite the energy cost difference being just 50 sen

i plotted a crappy chart of an example:
- consumer using 2.5kW all day, every day
- they have some solar panels, peak is maybe 1.3kW, all of it goes to offsetting consumption
red line is total consumption, orange line is imported energy (kWh)
blue line is cost of consumption if everything was imported, light blue line is cost of imported energy (MYR)
green line is the "savings" (i.e. cost of total consumption - cost of imports)
so for example, if you're using a hair above 1500kWh every month...
you could buy some bargain bin solar panels and cheap grid-tie inverters to offset a bit of the consumption... and breakeven in as little as 2-3 months
