A common mistake among learners of Russian.

Many people often confuse these two verbs: 👉

1) Смотреть (smatrét') ---> to watch or look at (active focus)
2) Видеть (vídet') ---> to see (passive perception)

Here’s an easy way to remember the difference:

1) Я смотрю фильм (Ya smatryú film) ---> I’m watching a movie (intentional action).
2) Я вижу собаку (Ya vízhu sabáku) ---> I see a dog (it’s just in my field of vision).

Let’s compare:

1) Он смотрит на карту (On smótrit na kártu) ---> He’s looking at the map (studying it).
2) Он видит карту (On vídit kártu) ---> He sees the map (it’s there, but he might not be focusing on it).
