Alchemist Accelerator

Dear Scholarium Team -
We wanted to thank you for applying to the Alchemist Accelerator. We sincerely appreciate all the detail and thought you put into your application.
With that said, we are unfortunately unable to extend you an invitation to come in for an interview, and hence a spot in Alchemist.
And while we wish we could give everyone detailed feedback, most applicants who were extended an invitation exhibited these characteristics compellingly:
* A new market. Our bias is towards teams creating truly new markets, not tweaks to, or enhancements of, existing markets. You needed to convince us that your venture was new, and the timing was ripe. You needed to pass the test of: "Could this business have been done 3 years ago? Is there a technology driver or shift that makes the timing now ripe for this?"
* Unique -- We had not already accepted a similar company into the accelerator.
* A team. The finalists selected typically had 2 or 3 co-founders, with no more than 1 business co-founder. The best teams had worked together before.
* Distinctive technical founders. The technical founders had to be distinctive, exhibited by the school they graduated from, github profile, or other examples of excellence. This was a very hard call, as many teams we were unable to invite in for interviews had solid technical pedigrees, but the top applicants were just more distinctive.
* Enterprise-focus. Our accelerator focuses on ventures that monetize from enterprises, and the top applicants were able to exploit our rolodex of contacts, sales mentors, etc. that are relevant to the enterprise.
* A market size being attacked that would warrant the interest of the top venture funds. We are looking for ventures that have a path toward a billion dollars of value in seven years. Sometimes, this means that solid businesses that had paths to tens or even hundreds of million dollars of value -- and would create great economic returns for founders -- were eliminated because we feared incentives would not be aligned with the top funds.
Thank you for applying. Go out and prove us wrong. We do sincerely wish you the best, and if you flesh out the team or your idea, and want to re-apply, we welcome that.
Thank you again,
Alchemist Admissions

О конкуренции в век AI

These days, competition feels fiercer than ever - with tools like Claude Code or Rork even small teams can quickly copy a successful app, tweak, and launch within days. And with social clip farming, teams can effectively "buy" distribution with a modest marketing budget, at least for a day or two. As a category becomes hot, new entrants raise money quickly, and even incumbents (ex. Google/OAI) move with startling speed & resources
All this is creating a lot of paranoia and hand wringing amongst startup founders. My honest advice - stay focused, keep shipping, and don't get distracted. Most startups succeed or fail based on their own execution, rather than something a competitor did. I wrote a post on this last year but thought it worth an update given the times
The counter-intuitive thing is that more competition is generally good for you. here's why:
1) competition validates the market - many other (presumably) smart hard working people recognize there's an opportunity in the area you're building in, so you're likely onto something. in fact, the presence of 0 competitors can often be a yellow flag - you might be too early, the market might structurally suck but you just don't know it yet etc
competitors can help educate potential customers on a novel technology or use-case through their sales and marketing efforts, and if you have the best product you ultimately benefit the most! on the flip-side, you can observe your competitors' mistakes and learn from them, which is priceless
2) nothing galvanizes a team like a shared public enemy. it's no longer a solitary marathon, it's now a race against others. framed well ("we deserve to win" etc), i've seen competition sharpen focus, cut the fat off roadmaps, and dramatically accelerate shipping velocity
the key here is not to try to match competitors on feature parity, but to play your own game better - listen to your customers more closely, iterate on the product faster, be more responsive to feedback etc. the team that builds the best product tends to be the closest to the customer
3) your competition likely has no idea what they're doing. maybe they had a viral video launch, but half their "product demo" could have been a smoke-screen or maybe they just lost their star engineer etc - you just don't know! even the companies that present the best to the outside, can often be a complete circus on the inside
this brings us back to the ground truth - most startups succeed or fail based on their own execution. a good analogy is tennis - you need to be aware of your opponent and their weaknesses (ex. try to hit to their backhand) but ultimately you will win or lose based on your own unforced errors
similarly, the best thing you can do as an early-stage founder in a competitive market is to just ship. stay focused, listen to your customers, and build a great product. don't get too bogged down about the competition - they're likely going to screw up =)
