Oil Wars: Strategic Pressure Returns to the Market

Saudi Arabia has signaled it won’t support further oil production cuts and is prepared to tolerate a prolonged period of low prices. While counterintuitive at first glance, this mirrors the kingdom’s 2014 strategy — when refusing to cut output triggered a price crash and wiped out large portions of the U.S. shale industry, helping the Saudis preserve market share.

A similar play is unfolding now. U.S. shale is recovering, but breakeven prices for many producers still range from $59–70 per barrel — far above Saudi levels. With falling prices, American producers are once again the first to feel the squeeze.

Meanwhile, Trump has called for secondary sanctions on countries still buying Iranian oil — primarily China, which accounts for over 90% of Iran’s exports. Although existing tariffs and tensions have already strained U.S.-China relations, the sanctions could further complicate oil trade by disrupting insurance, logistics, and settlement processes — potentially tightening global supply.

Both Saudi Arabia and the U.S. are attempting to shape the oil market: one through supply pressure, the other through geopolitical leverage. In both cases, the goal is clear — protect domestic producers and gain influence.
