Gender Equality and Women Empowerment{1/2}
◆The real picture of gender inequality in India is quite complicated and diversified, as it is present in many ways, various fields and many classes.
◆Over the past decade, gender equality and women empowerment have been explicitly recognized as crucial to the country’s social and economic development.
◆Additionally, the promotion of the gender equality and empowerment of women was one of the eight SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) to which India was a signatory.

Gender Equality:
●The first and the initial condition for Women Empowerment is to promote Gender Equality.
●Gender equality is a human right which entitles all the persons irrespective of their gender to live with dignity and freedom. Gender equality is also a precondition for the development and reducing of poverty.
●Gender equality demands the empowerment of the women, with a focus on identifying and redressing power imbalances and giving the women more autonomy to manage their own lives.
●When women get empowered, the whole family benefit, thus benefiting the society as a whole and these benefits repeatedly have a ripple effect on the future generations.

Correlation between Women empowerment and Child education & health:
•When an educated and empowered women in the house.
•She takes several measures to promote education and health of her children through transferring resources to a child’s health and education.
•Because of this, a healthy & educated child evolves into healthy & educated adult.
•The educated adult then promotes growth and development.

Different forms of gender-based discrimination:

Direct
Unequal pay: It is a prevalent form of discrimination; wages earned by the women are generally lesser than their male counterparts.
Glass ceilings: It’s an invisible barrier to keep the females from rising beyond a certain level in a hierarchy. It is mostly concerned with the high-achieving women in the corporate sector.
Diminished responsibilities: The sex differences are exaggerated to treat men and differently as the latter are given jobs with less responsibility such as house-keeping, organising events, etc. whereas the men are entrusted with leadership roles.
Positional bias: Women are stereotypically considered for the posts of secretaries, HR (human relations), receptionist etc.
Sexual harassment: Women are also a victim of different forms of sexual harassment at the workplace, which profoundly affects their work productivity and are a grave safety concern.
Restrooms: Workplaces, especially in the unorganized sector (e.g. Salt farming) do not have adequate facilities of restrooms subjecting the women workers to undergo long work-hours without relieving themselves impairing their health.
Victimization: When the discriminatory or biased treatment translates into the victimization of the women workers.
Terminations: There are various cases of females being dismissed on account of speaking against sexual harassment or for asking for equality, even in companies such as  Wipro. Also, females are being terminated on account of taking maternity leaves as well.

Gender Equality and Women Empowerment {2/2}

Indirect
Interview questions: Women candidates are often put to the questioning in terms of their work commitment because of their familial responsibilities and the choices they make in their personal lives which the male candidates are not asked regarding that.
Conversations: Because of the deeply seated discriminatory attitude towards women, they are talked quite differently than their male counterparts.
Outdated views: There are outdated views with respect to the dressing, working, and how they should carry themselves, etc. which affect their productivity.

Potential areas of focus to bridge Gender gap:
●From a corporate perspective, every organization is promoting a healthy ratio of women in its workforce. When we look at statistics 3 years before, it used to be 18 to 22% even in the formal sector.
●This has risen up to a figure of 30 to 32% presently. Secondly, this vast workforce is coming at the entry-level.
●The private sector & the business community will be critical in helping bridge the gap between the skills & jobs and enable access to decent work for the women.
●Vocational & technical training, life skills & financial literacy programmes for women to help them develop marketable skills & better decision-making abilities.
●Companies can even invest in women entrepreneurs through the microfinance, and bring their goods & services into the supply chains.
●Enhancing women access to the internet & ICT (Information & Communication Technology) can create a market of connected women who can be linked to business opportunities.
●Increasing the representation of women in the public spheres is essential.
●Female leaders serve as the role models and raise educational and career aspirations for the adolescent girls and their parents.
●An attitudinal shift is essential for women to be considered as equal within their homes and in broader society.
●Educating the Indian children from an early age about the importance of gender equality.

Some major challenges:
•Stereotypical thinking & Patriarchal mindset is the biggest challenge.
•Declining CSR (Child Sex Ratio), the practice of gender-biased sex selection, and child marriage.
•Domestic violence against women is even high.
•Women being unveiled to violence by their partners.
•Police reforms or Judicial remedies, though absolutely necessary, are mostly curative, rather than being preventive.
•Benefits such as maternity leave or related facilities will not be accessible to her in the informal sector.

Way Forward:
•A self-drive from the complete workforce.
•Encouragement from the family members, society and the corporations with whom they are employed.
•The best way in order to bridge the gender gap would be in terms of education.
•There is much width in the area of secondary & tertiary education, but more so in the area of technical knowledge.
•Until we view this as a mindset issue, i.e. we change the patriarchal mindset and also our myths and misconceptions around the preference for the son’s, etc. we would probably be discussing all these matters in an economic perspective.
•Need ownership of the idea that women employment is something that one wants to achieve as a goal and not by chasing the statistics.
•Government Initiatives are very much required.
•Companies should even now start seeing women’s issues.
•Women should not be leaving midway in their careers.
