Medium Range Surface to Air Missile (MRSAM)

◆It is the most advanced sleek missile developed by India in collaboration with Israel. Developed by the joint efforts of Israel Aerospace Industries and Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the missile was tested in the presence of Army officials.

▪️Specifications:

●The Army version of MRSAM has a strike range of nearly 100 km.

●It is a 4.5-meter long nuclear-capable ballistic missile.

●It weighs around 2.7 tonnes and is capable of carrying a payload of 60 kg.

●It has a top speed of Mach 2 and can be maneuvered to a high degree at the target interception range.

●The launching platform of the MRSAM includes, apart from the missile, a Multi-Functional Surveillance and Threat Alert Radar (MFSTAR) made for detection, tracking, and guidance of the missile.

▪️What are the uses:

◆This new version of MRSAM has been developed to seek and destroy airborne targets like jets, missiles and rockets, including projectiles launched simultaneously.

◆The other versions of the missile have been tested thrice. The trials of the naval version of MRSAM were conducted from the same testing facility in 2016. It was again tested for a user trial from INS Kochi in 2017.

▪️Stand-off Anti-Tank (SANT):

◆This missile was tested for the first time, last year from a Mi-35 attack helicopter and is a variant of HeliNA ATGM developed to be used from Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) of the MALE & HALE Class with a similar range of HeliNA.

▪️Cannon-launched Laser Guided Missile (CLGM):

●It is developed by DRDO is a semi-active Laser homing cannon launched missile that can be found from a 120mm main gun of the Arjun Tank. The 5 km range CLGM can target armoured vehicles, including Tanks, as well as low-flying aircraft.

❗️SAMHO: It is an infantry launched version of CLGM which requires a tripod launcher and has a range of 6km. CLGM and SAMHO are capable of both the direct and indirect laser designation.

❗️Man-Portable Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (MP ATGMs):

◆This is an Indian third-generation fire-and-forget AGM. It is presently under development by the DRDO in partnership with the Indian defence contractor VEM Technologies Private Limited. The missile is derived from India's Nag ATGM.

◆It is fitted with a HEAT warhead. It consists of a range of about 2.5 km.

◆The missile consists of a length of about 1,300 mm and a diameter of about 120 mm.

◆It also has a weight of 14.5 kg, with its CLU (Command Launch Unit) weighing 14.25 kg.

◆It is equipped with an advanced IIR seeker with integrated avionics. The missile has full attack capability.

◆It will reportedly compete with the systems such as FGM-148 Javelin and will be technologically more advanced than comparing to the Spike (ATGM).

❗️Jasmine anti-tank missile:

●The VEM Technologies Pvt. Ltd. proposed that they are capable of developing a third-generation ATM called ‘Jasmine’ in a short time as they had all the requisite technologies to develop it in-house.

DRDO: Laser Guided Anti-Tank Missile

✔️About Anti-Tank Missiles:

◆The Anti-Tank Missiles (ATMs) are the guided missiles that are designed to destroy heavily armored vehicles & tanks. These missiles utilize various driving programs involving laser-guided missiles, wire-guided missiles, etc.

◆There are three types of guidance systems in the ATGMs:

❗️First-generation: This type of missiles guided by the manual commands and the missile is directed to the target.

❗️Second generation: This type of Semi-automatically commanded missiles require to operate to keep the spot fixed on the target till impact.

❗️Third generation: This type of guided missiles depends on a laser or a W-band radar seeker in the nose of the missile, electro-optical imager seeker. These are the ‘fire-and-forget’ missiles in which the operator can retreat right after the firing as there is no more guidance needed.

❗️ATMs have various sizes:

▪️Small ATMs: These type of ATMs can be carried by a single person and can be launched from the shoulder.

▪️Medium ATMs:  These type of ATMs need a team of soldiers to carry them and to launch.

▪️Large ATMs: These type of ATMs are mounted on the Aircraft or the Main Battle Tanks. They can be launched from the large distances.

▪️Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGMs) which are used by India:

●DRDO ATMs, Amogha missile, Nag missile, Jasmine missile etc. are some of the first generation Anti- Tank Missiles that has been launched by the DRDO.

✔️DRDO Anti-Tank Missiles

●The DRDO ATMs is a first-generation wire-guided missile developed in the country by Defence Research & Development Laboratory (DRDL) of the Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO).

●It possesses a subsonic speed up to 300 ft/s (i.e. 91 m/s) with a range of 1.6 km and able to carry a 106 mm HEAT warhead.

▪️Amogha missile:

●The Amogha-1, is a second-generation, anti-tank guided missiles which have pinpoint accuracy for a distance up to 2.8 km. It is under development by the Bharat Dynamics at Hyderabad. It has even become the first missile which is designed and tested by the BDL (Bharat Dynamics Ltd.) Company.

●The missile will be processed in two versions. The Amogha -2 is the land version which has already been tested. The Amogha -3 is a fire and forget, 3rd generation ATM. The IIR version of the Amogha -3 uses an intelligent thermal vision, and then it attacks the target.

●The missile moves close to the target in a parabolic path and does not follow fully a parabolic path like the conventional projectiles. It then bends at the steep angles in order to attack the target.

▪️Nag missile:

◆The Nag missile also called ‘Prospina’ for the land-attack version is an Indian third-generation all-weather ‘fire-and-forget’, lock-on after launch ATGM with an operational range of 500m to 20km, single-shot hit probability of 0.9 and 10 years of maintenance-free shelf-life.

◆The Nag missile is under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Program (IGMDP) which is run by DRDO and is manufactured by BDL.The Ministry of Defence (MoD) recently announced its readiness to enter series production.

◆It comes in five variants, namely;

✔️Land version (for the mast-mounted system)
✔️HeliNa (Helicopter-launched Nag)
✔️Man-portable (MP ATGM)
✔️An Air-launched version (for air interdiction which will replace imaging infra-red (IIR) to milli-metric-wave (mmW) active radar homing seeker.
✔️NAMICA (Nag Missile Carrier) tank buster which is a modified BMP-2 Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) produced under and licensed in India by the Ordnance Factory Medak (OFMK).
