PART 3-HOW TO WIN PEOPLE TO YOUR WAY OF THINKING
Ch 1- You Can't Win an Argument
1)The Invaluable lesson learned by the author itself
Background- Author attending the banquet given in Sir Ross's (Australian ace in Palestine)
During the dinner a man was sitting beside the author narrated a humorous story hinged on the quotation
"There's a divinity that shapes our ends, rough hew them how they will"
(From- No Fear Shakespeare : Hamlet Act 5
Scene 2)
Explanation
Hamlet is saying that there is God/Fate/Destiny that guides our lives and no matter how hard we try to oppose our path/fate/destiny we cannot change it
The gentleman said it was from the Bible
He was wrong so the author opposed his point of view and aroused an argument
After some time the author met Frank Gammond (A storyteller who devoted years to study Shakespeare, Basically an expert)
Both the author (Dale Carnegie) and the Gentleman submitted their question
Mr Gammond listened sitting beside Dale Carnegie kicked him under the table and then said: "Dale you are wrong the Gentleman is right"
The point of Wisdom
Dale Carnegie asked Frank
"Frank you knew that quotation was from Shakespeare"
To this Frank replied. "Yes of course Act 5, Scene 2
But..........
Why prove to a man he is wrong?
Is that going to make him like you?
Why not let him save his face?
He didn't asked for your opinion.
Now after throwing a barrage of questions or constructive Criticism, Dale Carnegie realised and learn the most valuable Life lesson
Not only he had made the storyteller.and the Gentleman uncomfortable
He put them in an embarassing situation
(To be less argumentative)
2)As a result of all of this Dale Carnegie came to a conclusion that there is only one way to get the best out from an argument
IS TO AVOID IT
Avoid it as you avoid earthquakes and Rattlesnakes
3)You can't win an argument. You can't because if you lose it you lose it and if you win it, you lose it
Why???
When you win an argument . You feel fine but what about him? You made him feel inferior. You have hurt his pride. He will resent your Triumph. And----
"A man convinced against his will
Is the same opinion still"
▪️My wisdom regarding SSB Discussion
1st of all it's a damn discussion but it converts or turns into a debate by a small statement
Being self centered we always try to establish ourselves as the leading authority of the discussion but we need to achieve this by a Radical way it depends from Situation to situation but at least I can personally guarantee you all that surpressing or ignoring someone's voice is not the best way to lead a discussion
I am not gonna pour my whole wisdom there I gave you a spark it's your turn to convert it into a fire of inspiration
4)Ben Franklin Wisdom to avoid arguments
If you argue and rankle and contradict, you may achieve a victory sometimes, but it will be an empty victory because you will never get your opponent's good will
5) Lincoln's Wisdom
Better give your path to a dog than be bitten by him in contesting for the right. Even killing the dog would not cure the bite
6) Suggestions from the article BITS AND PIECES*
I)Welcome the disagreement
"When two partners always agree, one of them is not necessary."
If there is some point you haven't thought about,be thankful that it brought your attention
II) Distrust your first instinctive impression
Our natural reaction in a disagreeable situation is to be defensive
Be calm and compose
III) Control your temper
IV)Listen 1st
Give your opponents a chance to talk
Let them finish do not resist, defend or debate. This only raises Barrier
Build bridges of Understandings
V)Look for areas of agreement
After hearing your opponents dwell 1st on the points and areas on which you agree
VI)Be honest
Look for areas where you can admit error
Apologize for your mistakes

VII) Promise to think over your opponents ideas
Agree and think about their points it will save you from a position where your opponents can say: We tried to tell you,but you wouldn't listen"
VIII)Thank your opponents sincerely for their interest in your idea
IX) Think of them as People who really want to help you and you may turn your opponents into friends
7) Postpone Action
(This allows both sides to think through the problem)
If possible delay and reschedule
(Ask yourself hard questions)
Like
-Could my opponents be Right? Partly right?
-Is my reaction one will relieve my problem or will just relieve any frustration
-Will my reaction drive my opponents further away or draw them closer to me
-Will I win or learn
-What price I have to pay if I win
-If I am quiet about it will the disagreement blow over
-Is this difficult situation an opportunity for me
8)Wisdom of Opera tenor Jan Peerce regarding Arguments in Relationships
"My wife and I made a pact . When one yells the other should listen"
(Because if two people yell, there is no communication, just noise and bad vibrations)

Ch 2 "A sure way of Making Enemies and how to Avoid it
1) Theodore Roosevelt's humility in a nutshell
He confessed that if he would be right 75% of a time, he would reach the highest measure of expectation
The point here we should understand here is if the most distinguished men in the twentieth century could hope to be right what about you and me?
I am not judging anyone
But the point here is to understand if we can't be right everytime then why we should tell other people that they are wrong
2) Understanding what really happens when we pinpoint someone directly for doing something wrong
For this we need to understand the impact of our action
We struck a direct blow at their intelligence, judgement, pride and self respect
So what ends up
They strike back. And you try hard to represent your point with any logic they will not change their minds for you have hurt the feelings of others
(Always remember that we are not dealing with creatures of logic but we are dealing with creatures of emotion)
3)NEVER for FRKN God sake begin by announcing
"I am going to prove so-and-so to you"
This makes the other a defensive and armed approach
From here we will discuss on working and opting for a different approach
(Aiming to be Subtle and Adorable)
4) Philosophy of Great Scholars for understanding the concept
I) ALEXANDER POPE
"Men must be taught as if you taught them not and things unknown as things forgot"
Explanation
You should be so modest in your method of conveying your opinion to someone that even if you have conveyed it and taught that person something, he shouldn't feel that you forced it upon him and it should be so subtle as to what that person deems as unknown is actually something that he forgot and not that he was never exposed to such a knowledge. So basically he talks about the Socrates method of arguing where you maintain modesty in your way of conveying your opinions.

My Wisdom
This quote beautifully explains the art of expressing your opinion with patience and understanding
This helps us to have deeper level of connection and we can share each other points without offending anyone
For arguments we need to develop our Own patterns of Understanding and processing the argument in such a way that it becomes
Positively Reinforced from your side
II) GALILEO
"You cannot teach a man anything; you can only help him find it within himself
III)LORD CHESTERFIELD
"Be wiser than other people if you can but do not tell them to do so"
IV) SOCRATES
"One thing only I know and that is that I know nothing"
5) So you get the point- "Quit telling people they are wrong and it pays
6) Developing a different approach to correct someone
(Approach of Kindness and Humility and Understanding with compassion)
It's always better begin by saying
"Well, now, look, I thought otherwise, but I may be wrong. I frequently am. And if I am wrong. I want to be put right. Let's examine the facts."
The magic behind this approach is your opponents become less disarming
Because we understand the impact of diplomacy and tact
7) Admitting the fact that you may be wrong stops all arguments and inspire your opponent to be as broad minded as you
8) Wisdom from JAMES HARVEY ROBINSON'S book "The mind in the making"
-We sometimes find ourselves changing our minds without any heavy emotion
-When we are told that we are wrong we resent the imputation and harden our hearts
-We are incredibly heedless in the formation of our beliefs
-But find ourselves filled with an illicit(not allowed) Passion for them When....
Anyone proposes to rob us of their companionship
- It's not only about the idea which is dear to us but of our self esteem which is threatened....
- The little word "My" is the most important one in human affairs

- We are tend to resent(Feeling angry because you think that it's unfair) the imputation that things in our lives are wrong
- We like to continue the belief that what we have accustomed(used to it) to accept it as true
- The resentment aroused when doubt is cast upon any of our assumptions
Leads to- Seek every manner of excuse for clinging to it
Result= Our so called Reasoning consists of
FINDING ARGUMENTS for going on believing as we already do
8)Carl Rogers(Eminent Psychologist) Wisdom from his book "On becoming a person"
-The value of communication and relationship increases when we permit ourselves to understand the other person
-Our 1st reaction to other statements is evaluation and judgement
-We should have a feeling of Understanding to grasp the point the other statement has to convey
Problem-Overrated Draperies done by the author
Scenario-
-A visitor commented as
"What? That's awful. I am afraid he put one over on you
(Not properly expressed)
Reaction
Defensive and Conflicting
-Another visitor
Admired the Draperies done by author
Reaction
Appreciative+ Opened up thus admitted the truth
What to learn??(From the 2 different Visitors)
When we are wrong, we admit it to ourselves
And if we are handled gently and tactfully
We may admit it to others making ourselves Broad minded+Developing an understanding for our flawed opinions
But if someone is too critical then we become busy defending our ego and self esteem due to which we fail to understand the fact behind the statement
9)Ben Franklin Wisdom
-Ben Franklin was wise enough to understand the point of head on Criticism
-He worked to change his Rude, Self Centered ways of processing opinions and became open to them
Rules he established for himself
-To forbear all direct contradiction to the sentiments of others and all Positive assertion of my own
-To avoid every word or expression in a language that imported fixed opinion (Such as 'certainly,' 'undoubtedly,' etc instead he adopted
"I conceive(to think of a new idea or plan)"
"I apprehend(to catch an idea)
"I imagine"
10) Understanding the importance of acknowledging an opinion by an example
(Katherine A. Allred)
Description
-Industrail engineering supervisor
-Maintain systems and standards for her operators for a yarn processing plant
The problem
She had to develop a system to deal with the expanded Inventory of yarn she knew the present system was not adequate to support it so she developed a new system
The mindset
Proving herself that her approach is right and they are wrong
(Not allowing the other to express their opinions)
The Result
Proposal rejected
Now she did an analysis and opted a different approach
The mindset
To understand the problem
Discuss
And Reframe it according to their opinions with her knowledge
(She let them develop her system themselves)
The Result
Proposal accepted
Here we learn the real life importance of acknowledging someone's opinion
11) Reason why Martin Luther King admired Air Force General Daniel "Chappe" James
His Reason- "I judge people by thier own principles- not by my own"
CRUX
Don't argue with your spouse or your adversary
"Don't tell them they are wrong, don't get them stirred up. Use a little diplomacy"
"Show respect for other person's opinions. Never say. 'You're wrong"

India's De-Hyphenated Policy: Israel & Palestine
✔️Why in News- Recently, on the sidelines of the COP26 summit in Glasgow, the Prime Minister of Palestine called for India’s support to play a stabilising role in West Asia by maintaining cooperation with all related parties.
◆This statement is significant in the context of India’s External Affairs Minister visit to Israel, whereby he excluded a trip to the Palestinian territory.
◆India in the recent year has been following a dehyphenation policy between Israel and Palestine.
▪️India’s Policy Towards Israel and Palestine:
●The Israeli-Palestinian conflict dates back to the end of the nineteenth century. It is linked to the age-old tussle over identity and land starting with Jerusalem.
●In 1947, the United Nations (UN) adopted Resolution 181, known as the Partition Plan, which sought to divide the British Mandate of Palestine into Arab and Jewish states.
●This led to unresolved conflict between Israel and Palestine.
●Traditionally, India’s foreign policy towards Israel and Palestine has been a hyphenated foreign policy.
●However, hyphenating the ties with Israel – linking them to ties with the Palestinian Authority – essentially prevented India from pursuing a pragmatic policy of what was in India’s best interests.
●In recent times, India is being seen shifted towards a Dehyphenation of Policy.
✔️Dehyphenation of Policy:
◆India’s policy on the longest running conflict in the world has gone from being unequivocally pro-Palestine for the first four decades, to a tense balancing act with its three-decade-old friendly ties with Israel.
◆In recent years, India’s position has also been perceived as pro-Israel.
◆In 2017, in an unprecedented move, India’s PM visited only Israel and not Palestine.
◆Then, the recent visit of the Prime Minister to Palestine, Oman and the UAE is again a continuation of similar policy.
◆This departure from earlier policy and endorsing an independent policy towards these two rivals is called the de-hyphenation in India’s foreign policy.
◆It means India’s relationship with Israel would stand on its own merits, independent and separate from India’s relationship with the Palestinians.
◆The de-hypenhation is actually a careful balancing act, with India shifting from one side to another as the situation demands.
◆As India moves towards becoming a larger player in global politics and economics, these pre-existing policies are increasingly in need of review, and de-hyphenating Israel and Palestine was a process long past its due date.
◆In recent years, India has broken the tradition of supporting Palestine at the UN.
◆In 2019, India voted in favour of Israel at the ECOSOC (Economic and Social Council) to deny observer status to a Palestinian organisation named Shahed.
◆Further, India abstained during the voting on a resolution calling for investigation into Israeli actions in the Gaza Strip at the Human Rights Council.
❗️Palestine Call For India:
●India had a historic tradition of supporting the rights of the Palestinian people. Palestine wants India's technical support to be “parallel to the political support”.
●It wants India to reaffirm supporting the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent State of Palestine, with Jerusalem as its capital.
❓Way Forward
◆India’s role in multilateral organisations requires “strenuous efforts in cooperation with all related parties to achieve security and stability in the Middle East and West Asia”.
◆India is currently serving as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for 2021-22 and was re-elected to the Human Rights Council for the 2022-24. India should use these multilateral forums to act as a mediator to resolve the Israel-Palestine issue.
