Kargil Vijay Diwas
• On this day in 1999, the Kargil War, also known as the Kargil conflict, formally came to an end, with Indian soldiers successfully recapturing mountain heights.
• The Kargil War was an armed conflict fought between India and Pakistan from May to July 1999 in the Kargil district of Kashmir and elsewhere along the Line of Control (LoC).
• In India, the conflict is also referred to as Operation Vijay to clear out the Kargil sector.
• Kargil Vijay Diwas was named after the successful Operation Vijay.
• It is celebrated in India on 26 July as India successfully took command of the high outposts which had been lost to Pakistan.
• The Kargil War was fought for more than 60 days which ended on 26 July and resulted in the loss of life on both sides.
• The war ended with India regaining control of all the previously held territory.
• Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated on 26 July every year to honor the heroes of the Kargil War.
