Naxalism in India -
--Naxalism, the word, has been derived from the name – ‘Naxalbari’, a village in West Bengal, where it is originated.
--From West Bengal, these moves spread to various areas of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. Presently, they are active in approximately 40% of India’s Geographical area.
--They control large portions of remote and densely forested area and are concentrated in an area called Red Corridor.
Cause of Spread of Naxalism-
1.Culture - Tribals sense that outsiders are a threat to their culture and can mutate their way of life.
2.Forest Policy -
•Tribals have a distinct way of carrying out activities like agriculture. They practice slash and burn type, which leads to deforestation and reduces soil fertility.
•The forest policy prohibits them from deforesting an area of land which they regard as an interference in their matters.
3.Governance-
Sometimes people think that they are deprived of government policies and are not part of the decision-making process. That also leads to the spread of the cause.
4.Ethnic clashes with other tribes -
there are many ethnic clashes have been going on amongst the tribal communities, which sometimes lead to the destruction of government property and affects the tribal people.
Effects of Naxalism -
●Countries like China and Pakistan have hijacked the Naxal movement and provided them with finances, arms and training spread unrest and destroy the peace of the nations.
●Youth of country is being derailed and brainwashed to join such org.
●common man is perishing in between the tussle of Naxals and Govt.
●Extreme poverty and negative development
●adverse effect on trade and economy
●higher expenditure on defence at the cost of education
●lower exports and reduced trades.
Blue print to end naxalism:
-co ordination between police and intelligence agencies to stop funding of naxals from various routes.
-Paramilitary and state police working in unison to combat the Naxalites by conducting counter-insurgency operations
-More focus on developing confidence-building measures in the tribal areas, such as providing them with adequate representation, making them economically independent, making them feel as one.
Operation Samadhan -
-GOI initiative
-training and motivation
-technology harness
-aggressive strategy

Russia-Ukraine Issue :
--both the nations accuse each other of violating International Maritime Law,referring 1982 UN convention on the law of sea which both states joined in 1990s.
--Ukraine insists on freedom of movement in the Kerch Strait and the Sea of Azov in accordance with this agreement. While
Russian side is trying to draw territorial borders.
Kerch Strait -
• only connection between the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov and the only way to reach two important Ukrainians ports.
2014 Ukrainian Revolution -
•It began with a series of violent episodes of civil unrest in Keiv,Ukraine as part of Euromaiden protest against Govt.
•In brief, this one was anti-Yanukorych (President of Ukraine-Viktor Yanukorych),who is Pro Russia. Those who protested wanted close Ukraine- EU relations and not Ukraine - Russia partnership.
2014 Crimean Crisis (2014 - present )
•this happened when Pro Russian forces seized control of the Crimea region.
•As president who was Pro Russia seeked help from Russia and Russian troops entered Crimean peninsula in Ukraine.
India's Stance -
•India has walked a tight rope over the Crimean issue.
•The statement from MEA referred to the toppling of Yanukorych as Change of Govt and emphasised on the importance of establishing a legitimate democratic process.
•But New Delhi has also iterated tha Russia has legitimate interest in Ukraine and did not criticize the Russian Incorporation of Crimea.
(Thus the balancing act done by India should be seen in wider perspective of its Foreign Policy)
•Ukraine and India have significant Defence cooperation.Ukraine has been a source of military technologies and shipments for India.
Way forward -
•UN security council and NATO called on both nations to de escalate tensions.
•Russia has not softened its stance despite the hardships from the economic sanctions since it's Crimea's occupation.
• Thus greater diplomatic engagement between the two sides and the preference of dialogue over confrontation should be made for a speedy resolution of the conflict.

India and Non Proliferation Treaty(NPT)
-After Independence India had a very idealistic foreign policy.
-In 1954,India supported a total ban on nuclear weapons But wars of 1962 and 1965 with two of its neighbours forced India to strengthen it's defence and India refused to sign NPT.
-India found it discriminatory as it was binding only on non nuclear weapon states (NNWS) while the nuclear weapon states (NWS) were not bound to adhere to disarmament.
Aspects of NPT-
1.objectives
a.Non Proliferation
b.Disarmament
c.peaceful use of nuclear energy
2.All permanent members of UN security council are signatories to NPT.
3.Currently,5 countries who have not signed NPT are - India, Pakistan,Israel,North Korea and South Sudan.
4.According to NPT,nations will not transfer nuclear weapons and technology to non nuclear nations.
5.International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was given responsibility to ensure that peaceful technology doesn't shift to military purpose.
6.1995 extension of treaty allows Nuclear Weapon States(NWS) to retain their nuclear arsenal indefinitely.
Reasons for India's Opposition -
●Discriminatory nature of NPT
-no serious disarmament
-violation by china helping France, Britain,Israel
-two sets of rules verification for NWS and NNWS
●failed to address nuclear proliferation
●India's nuclear security concerns not addressed
●nuclear weapons were not completely eliminated.
Conclusion-
--In 1998,India successfully conducted Nuclear tests at Pokhran keeping in mind national security. This led to criticism by many countries led by USA imposed sanctions against India.
--These sanctions severely affected our nuclear programme even for peaceful uses such as nuclear energy .
--To overcome this India signed Indo-US nuclear deal.
But India still continues to resist the call by some countries to sign NPT as it considers it's unfair.

Light Combat Aircraft
1. A Light combat aircraft is a light multirole jet military aircraft, most coming from advanced trainers that have been modified or designed for engaging in light combat missions, either in light strike or attack missions, reconnaissance or interdiction roles.
2.They are also slower than their bigger counterparts and most are only capable of subsonic speeds though some are capable of reaching mach 1+.
3. Although equipped with either guns or short range air-to-air missiles it is usually for self-defense purpose or anti-hostile aircraft/helicopter missions not for air defense as lightweight fighters do.
4.However, they can still be used to patrol the skies and implement border patrol or air policing
