Remove the wedges in India-Bangladesh ties
✔️Context
◆India and Bangladesh Friendship is historic and has been evolving over the last 50 years.
◆India played an important role in Bangladesh independence by providing political, diplomatic, military and humanitarian support during Bangladesh’s Liberation War.
◆During the war, Nearly 3,900 Indian soldiers gave up their lives and around 10 a million Bangladeshi refugees took shelter in India.
✔️Now it is about cooperation
●The India-Bangladesh relationship has oscillated post-independence as Bangladesh passed through different regimes.
●The relationship remained cordial until the assassination of Bangladesh’s founding president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on August 15, 1975, after which there was a period of military rule and the rise of General Ziaur Rahman who became President and was also assassinated in 1981.
●In1982-1991 when a military-led government by General H.M. Ershad ruled the country, India - Bangladesh relationship thawed again.
●Even after Bangladesh’s return to parliamentary democracy in 1991, the relationship has gone through various highs and lows due to changes in the political regime.
●However, in the last decade, India-Bangladesh relations have warmed up, and have entered a new era of cooperation concentrating on trade, connectivity, energy, and defence, thus moving beyond historical and cultural ties.
●Bangladesh and India solved their border issues peacefully by ratifying the historic Land Boundary Agreement in 2015, in which enclaves were swapped allowing inhabitants to choose their country of residence and become citizens of either India or Bangladesh.
●Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has uprooted anti-India insurgency elements from its borders, thus making the India-Bangladesh border one of the region’s most peaceful border.
●Bangladesh peaceful border has allowed India to make a massive redeployment of resources to its more contentious borders elsewhere.
●Bangladesh has become India’s biggest trading partner in South Asia with exports to Bangladesh in FY 2018-19 at $9.21 billion and imports at $1.04 billion.
●India has allowed duty-free access to multiple Bangladeshi products.
●Trade between both could be further increased and balanced if non-tariff barriers from the Indian side could be removed.
●In the field of development, India has extended three lines of credit to Bangladesh in recent years amounting to $8 billion for the construction of roads, railways, bridges, and ports.
●However, in eight years until 2019, only 51% of the first $8 billion line of credit has been utilised and the remaining two lines of credit worth $6.5 billion are not yet mobilised, which is due to red-tapism from India’s end, and slow project implementation on Bangladesh’s end.
●Bangladeshis make up a large portion of tourists in India, outnumbering all tourists arriving from Western Europe in 2017.
●One in every five tourists is a Bangladeshi and Bangladesh accounts for more than 35% of India’s international medical patients.
●Bangladesh contributes more than 50% of India’s revenue from medical tourism.

✔️The connectivity boost
●Connectivity between both countries has greatly improved.
●A direct bus service between Kolkata and Agartala has reduced the route distance to 500 km, as compared to the 1,650 km if it ran through the Chicken’s Neck to remain within India.
●There are 3 passenger and freight railway services running between the two countries, with 2 more routes are in process of being restored.
●Recently, a 1.9kilometre-long bridge, named Maitri Setu, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, connecting Sabroom in India with Ramgarh in Bangladesh.
●Bangladesh allows the shipment of goods from its Mongla and Chattogram (Chittagong) seaports to be carried by road, rail, and waterways to Agartala (Tripura) via Akhura; Sutarkandi (Assam) via Sheola, Dawki (Meghalaya) via Tamabil; and Srimantpur (Tripura) via Bibirbazar.
●Due to the friendly relationship, the landlocked Assam, Meghalaya and Tripura are now able to access open water routes through the Chattogram and Mongla ports.
✔️Bones of contention
◆However, the Teesta water-sharing issue has not been resolved yet.
◆Even, the Border killings are yet to stop, The year 2020 saw the highest number of border shootings by the Border Security Force.
◆The shots are mostly fired against unarmed civilians, usually, cattle traders, who try to illegally cross the border.
◆India instead of stopping border killings has justified them.
◆Recently, India's External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, during his visit to Dhaka, gave a statement that “our shared objective should be a no crime-no death border, instead of questioning the killings. Further, no due legal proceedings are being followed in tackling border crimes.
◆The government’s proposal to implement the National Register of Citizens across the whole of India reflects poorly on India-Bangladesh relations as the bill includes people of all religions and ethnicities barring Muslims.
◆India needs to address the deportation of illegal Muslim immigrants, some of whom claim to have come from Bangladesh, thus affecting the India Bangladesh relationship.
◆Sri Lanka, Nepal and the Maldives, once considered traditional Indian allies, are now tilting towards China due to the Asian giant’s massive trade, infrastructural and defence investments in these countries.
◆Even after the ‘Neighbourhood First Policy’, India has been losing its influence in the region due to Chinese competition.
◆Bhutan also does not abide by Indian influence as witnessed by its withdrawal from the BBIN (Bhutan-Bangladesh-India-Nepal) motor vehicles agreement.
◆China, using the advantage of its cheque-book diplomacy, has well-entrenched South Asia, including Bangladesh, where it has increased economic and defence relations.
✔️Keeping the momentum going
●Over the last decade, India-Bangladesh relations have been gaining positive momentum and Now today, when Bangladesh celebrates its 50 years of independence (March 26, 1971), India continues to be one of its most important neighbours and strategic partners.
●As the larger country, it's the responsibility of India to be generous enough to let the water flow and ensure that there is no border killing for illegal cattle traders as there are appropriate means for justice.
✔️Conclusion
◆These small but important steps like solving the water issue or the border killings may help to overcome the long-standing snags in a relationship which otherwise is gradually coming of age in 50 years.
◆Both the countries need to continue working on the three Cs — cooperation, collaboration, and consolidation to have a long-lasting healthy relationship.

Those who are having Meditation as their hobby, might face these PI questions in SSB
1.What is meditation?
2.Which meditation do you do?
3.Why Vipasana meditation/or any specific meditation, any specific reason?
4.What is transcendent meditation?
5.Who discovered it?
6.Tell us about different types of Meditations practiced?
7.Meditation has been made into a commodity for sale today. What is your opinion?
8.What are the benefits of Meditation?
❗️Meditation as a Hobby
◆Meditation has no universal definition as such. Different practitioners preach different ways. Meditation is practiced in following forms:
✔️by paying attention to the breath, to an idea or feeling (such as loving-kindness), to a kōan, or to a mantra (like transcendental meditation), and
✔️single point meditation
✔️vipasana method (no-thoughts)
