Sixteen Million Germans Living Below Poverty Line as Food Banks Falter

A report by 🇩🇪 broadcaster DW blames an influx of Ukrainian refugees, inflation and less goodwill from companies, as compounding the crisis.

The biggest food bank network, Tafel, serves over 2mn people and has had to turn away new applicants to provide for existing clients.

There is now a call for Berlin to step in to help.

India And UAE Agree To Settle Trade In Local Currencies

In a significant boost to the position of the Indian rupee, New Delhi and Abu Dhabi on Saturday agreed to create mechanisms for settling trade in national currencies, as opposed to using US dollars. 

During Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s one-day visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), one of the largest oil producers in the Middle East, the two nations’ central banks signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a framework to promote the use of local currencies such as the rupee and the dirham for cross-border transactions. They will also link their instant payment systems, India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI), and the UAE’s Instant Payments Platform (IPP).

"This is a very important aspect of India-UAE cooperation. It paves the way for enhanced economic collaboration and will make international financial interactions simpler," the prime minister said.

Peter Schiff: Dollar Decline Means Lower Inflation Is Transitory

The decline in the US dollar's purchasing power on international markets suggests that inflation may not be as under control as the mainstream perspective suggests, according to economist Peter Schiff. Schiff argues that the drop in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) has primarily been driven by the strength of the dollar, which acts as a tightening mechanism. African Governments Push For Financial Independence

African leaders gathered in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, for the fifth mid-year African Union (AU) coordination summit to discuss how to advance socioeconomic development across the continent.

Speaking to RT, activist and Pan-Africanism scholar Mcebo Freedom Dlamini said the posture of current African leaders demonstrates their awareness of problems besetting the continent, specifically the failure of the so-called global north to listen correctly to the continent's needs.

“This crop of leaders will begin to demand a seat on the dinner table,” Dlamini predicted, adding that “it is hazardous” when matters of Africa are being deliberated. Still, the continent’s leaders are absent from the “dinner table when the world is sitting.”
