It was a perfect evening for Fogbows as we cruised along Queen Charlotte Island/Haida Guwaii aboard the Majestic Princess.

This image is a composite of the Moon and Sun in H-alpha, obtained on June 25, 2023. The Moon shows in the terminator two formations of lunar features with the shapes of the letter "X" and the letter "V". They only appear when the angle of illumination on the lunar surface is about 90º and the phenomenon only lasts for a few hours. Because of this, from a given location they can only be seen two or three times a year. The "X" is produced by solar illumination on the mountain ridges of the craters La Caille, Purbach and Blanchinus. The "V" is formed by the crater Ukert and other small craters. The Sun shows giant protuberances produced by the high activity, as it is in full ascent phase to reach the solar maximum predicted for 2025. A unique coincidence is that from Earth the Sun and the Moon show the same apparent size, which produces one of the most beautiful spectacles of nature, a total solar eclipse. In the second image the lunar "X" and "V" are identified.
