You’ve probably already heard of DeepSeek — a Chinese neural network that became popular not so much for its functionality, but because of its accessibility. Now we know that effective neural networks can be free.

So how did this happen, and why did DeepSeek turn out to be «cheaper»?

The secret lies in the Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) architecture used by the neural network. It enables the model’s domains to be split into several parts (about 256 pieces). When a request is sent, only the necessary part of the neural network is activated instead of the entire model. This greatly reduces computational costs.

As it later turned out, DeepSeek was trained in just a couple of months using a stack of nVidia H800 graphics cards, whereas other major players in the neural network market took several months or even years — and required huge amounts of computing equipment.
