i don't think you can extrapolate Lebanon to societies outside out of it that much, "oh this is the problem with the whole west now." Every empire operates on some basis like this throughout history, sure they collapse but everything collapses eventually. you can take successful examples like this such as Singapore and Hong Kong but they're small, still work very well.
Its a stretch to say "civilizations," but with cultures you run into issues, and ones probably going to consume the other in a long enough time scale, or they're both going to get integrated into some grander civic identity if the civilization is held together. The starkness of how solidified these lines are not the reality of how those groups interact with each other all the time, that region has been like that for its entire history as long as its been Abrahamic. Not to say that there would be civil divisions without western interference, there still would be turbulence but it wasn't helped when it was invaded countless times.
