100s of unvaccinated teachers in Queensland to have pay docked and face disciplinary action, amidst a nationwide teacher shortage
An "unconscionable" letter has been sent out advising teachers in Queensland that they will have their pay docked if they haven't got the Covid-19 vaccine. Education Department assistant director-general in human resources Anne Crowley penned a letter telling hundreds of teachers who refused to get the jab that they would face incremental pay cuts over 20 weeks. It came after all unvaccinated teachers in the state were placed under investigation for failing to comply with a direction from the Education Department and were suspended without pay from December 2021. As per the Public Service Act, if a teacher is being investigated they are suspended on full pay unless it is a criminal charge, The Courier Mail reported.

UK economy shrank record 11% in 2020, worst since end of World War I
Britain recorded its biggest fall in output in more than 300 years in 2020 when it faced the brunt of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as a larger decline than any other major economy, updated official figures showed on Monday. Gross domestic product fell by 11.0% in 2020, the Office for National Statistics said. This was a bigger drop than any of the ONS's previous estimates and the largest fall since 1709, according to historical data hosted by the Bank of England. British statisticians regularly update GDP estimates as more data becomes available. The ONS's initial estimates had already suggested that in 2020 Britain suffered its biggest fall in output since the "Great Frost" of 1709. But more recently the ONS had revised down the scale of the fall to 9.3%, the largest since just after World War One. Comment: So, the lockdowns had a similar effect on the economy as either a little ice age or a world war.

Russians increasingly disillusioned with Western values - poll
The number of Russians who believe Western values to be beneficial to the country has fallen drastically in the last 20 years, according to a poll conducted earlier this month by the Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) and published on Tuesday. "The West is not only a culture, but a whole system of socio-political and economic patterns and models," wrote the pollsters, noting that while Russian society largely looked to the West in the 1990s, it has since changed its attitude towards Western values. Back in 2000, only 10% of respondents felt that Western democracy and civilization were "harmful for Russians," according to the poll. Now, however, that number has risen to 26%.

BEST OF THE WEB: Leaked slides detail YouTube's Ukraine censorship - journalist
Posting screenshots from an internal training course reportedly cost a Polish contractor his job. A tutorial for YouTube's content moderators that emerged on social media on Tuesday shows that the Google-owned platform has labeled a number of critical positions on the conflict in Ukraine "hateful" or "extreme" and can censor or demonetize creators on those grounds. While the parent company Alphabet has not confirmed or denied the screenshots' authenticity, a Polish contractor who shared them has reportedly been fired. Six screenshots shared by Russian journalist Andrey Guselnikov on Telegram show internal codes and examples of what YouTube has labeled "harmful" or "hateful" content in an online course mandated for content moderators. According to the slides, the "glorification/promotion of [the] 'Z' symbol associated with the Russian military" is labeled "hate" and "extreme" under policy ID 864. So is saying that the conflict "is to denazify the Ukrainian government," which is what...

A dad took photos of his naked toddler for the doctor. Google flagged him as a criminal
Google has an automated tool to detect abusive images of children. But the system can get it wrong, and the consequences are serious. Mark noticed something amiss with his toddler. His son's penis looked swollen and was hurting him. Mark, a stay-at-home dad in San Francisco, grabbed his Android smartphone and took photos to document the problem so he could track its progression. It was a Friday night in February 2021. His wife called an advice nurse at their health care provider to schedule an emergency consultation for the next morning, by video because it was a Saturday and there was a pandemic going on. The nurse said to send photos so the doctor could review them in advance.

Canadian soldier with PTSD 'outraged' when VA suggested euthanasia
A Canadian armed forces veteran suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and a traumatic brain injury was offered medical assistance in dying by an employee of Veterans Affairs Canada. The VAC released a statement last week admitting to an incident "where medical assistance in dying was discussed inappropriately" with the veteran. The department pledged that "appropriate administrative action will be taken" after the veteran expressed outrage at the suggestion, according to a report in Global News. According to the report, the veteran called VAC seeking support for PTSD when the employee brought up medical assistance in dying, or euthanasia, unprompted. The veteran was reportedly shocked by the suggestion. His family told Global News that the soldier had been making positive progress in his physical and mental rehabilitation and that he felt betrayed by an agency that is tasked with assisting veterans.

Protesters surround New Zealand parliament
A crowd of demonstrators took to the streets to denounce remaining Covid mandates. Protesters converged around New Zealand's parliament to condemn the government's response to the Covid-19 pandemic, drawing a heavy police response and a crowd of counter-demonstrators. Tuesday's action saw around 2,000 people gather at the parliament building in Wellington, according to the Associated Press, which noted that law enforcement had made preparations in the area to prevent any major unrest, blocking off roads, erecting barricades, and barring demonstrators from bringing structures onto the grounds.

Irony: Teachers union head who is partnered with left-wing disinformation group shares fake news
American Federation of Teachers (AFT) President Randi Weingarten admitted to sharing fake news Sunday when the union leader published a list of supposedly banned books in Florida. "Books we have taught for generations!" Weingarten wrote in a quote tweet amplifying the list from an account called "Freesus Patriot," which refused to reveal its sources. Titles include classics from "To Kill a Mockingbird" and "The Handmaid's Tale" to the Harry Potter novels. The list of purportedly blacklisted books, however, was entirely made up, with many remaining in K-12 curricula throughout the state. "My bad," Weingarten wrote in a follow-up post. "Looks like some of the books weren't banned."

SOTT FOCUS: Objective:Health - Diet "Experts" Still Trying to Get You to Go Vegetarian
The push to get the general public to stop eating meat and go vegetarian continues at pace, with a new study in the Lancet attempting to misguide. Interestingly, the diet dictocrats have been forced to drop (somewhat) the old red-meat-and-fat-raises-cholesterol-leading-to-heart-attack nonsense, simply because, as people have become more aware of the scam, it's no longer possible to steamroll over the truth. But fear not. There's a new way meat is going to murder you in your sleep: TMAO. Trimethylamin N-oxide is an organic compound generated from the metabolism of a number of nutrients found in meat. Aside from the fact that the Lancet study was poorly designed, the assumption that TMAO causes cardiovascular issues is extremely tenuous. Similarly, the food that most boosts TMAO is fish, not meat, a fact the study fails to mention. It would appear that "official science" is hoping to get as much traction out of the TMAO myth as they did out of the cholesterol myth, and their...

Summer thunderstorms flood streets and homes in Athens and northern Greece - 3 inches of rain in an hour
The short but intense spells of thunderstorms on Monday night to early Tuesday morning led to the flooding of major streets in and around Athens and Thessaloniki, and trees were uprooted in northern Greece. No injuries have been reported thus far, but, in Ptolemaida in northern Greece and nearby villages, flooding in basements of homes led to additional firefighters being summoned to help from the regions of Epirus and West Macedonia. Since Monday night, these included a total of fifty firefighters with twenty trucks. Water was pumped out in forty-five homes, basements, and professional spaces, and in a farming village about ten kilometers from Ptolemaida, the village of Ardassa saw over three inches of rainfall in nearly an hour. There were reports of flooded agricultural fields, irrigation channels, and overwhelmed drainage channels.

Hail, torrential rain leave at least 31 dead in Tibetan-populated areas of China
Hail and heavy rain caused the deaths of at least 31 people in Tibetan-populated counties in northwestern China's Qinghai and Gansu provinces, Tibetan sources said. More than 2,000 heads of livestock were also killed in the storms. In Mangra (in Chinese, Guinan) county of Tsolho (Hainan) Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in China's Qinghai province, where five people and the livestock perished, hail and rain on Saturday caused significant damage, including the destruction of tents used by nomads, a Tibetan from the region and one who lives in exile told RFA. "The flooding actually came from the nomadic region of Panchen and Panchung [in Mangra county]," said the Tibetan inside the region.

NASA's stunning new images of Jupiter show planet in unprecedented detail, including auroras and haze
With giant storms, powerful winds, auroras, and extreme temperature and pressure conditions, Jupiter has a lot going on. Now, NASA's James Webb Space Telescope has captured new images of the planet. Webb's Jupiter observations will give scientists even more clues to Jupiter's inner life. "We hadn't really expected it to be this good, to be honest," said planetary astronomer Imke de Pater, professor emerita of the University of California, Berkeley. De Pater led the observations of Jupiter with Thierry Fouchet, a professor at the Paris Observatory, as part of an international collaboration for Webb's Early Release Science program. Webb itself is an international mission led by NASA with its partners ESA (European Space Agency) and CSA (Canadian Space Agency). "It's really remarkable that we can see details on Jupiter together with its rings, tiny satellites, and even galaxies in one image," she said.

9 year-old girl shot dead in Liverpool after gunman chased man into house - police
A nine-year-old girl was fatally shot in Liverpool after a gunman burst into her family's home chasing another man who did not live there, police said. Merseyside police named the victim as Olivia Pratt-Korbel, who was getting ready for bed at the time. Serena Kennedy, the force's chief constable, said the girl's family had been "torn apart" by the shooting in the Dovecot area of the city on Monday night. They were "absolutely devastated, inconsolable and heartbroken", she added. Police said Olivia's mother, Cheryl Korbel, appeared to have opened her front door in Kingsheath Avenue to see what was happening after hearing shots in the street. A 35-year-old man then forced his way into the house followed by the gunman.

UK PM candidate Liz Truss says she is 'ready' to use nukes
Liz Truss feels "ready" to launch Trident nuclear weapons, the frontrunner for Conservative leadership declared at Tuesday's hustings in Birmingham, UK, saying that making decisions like this is an "important duty of the prime minister." The foreign secretary did not elaborate on which country the UK might be persuaded to use nuclear weapons against. She has delivered plenty of hawkish rhetoric along the campaign trail, primarily targeting Russia, and is an avid booster of the Ukrainian cause. Truss also pledged to raise military spending by 3% of GDP by the end of the decade.

UFO shot down an ICBM in 1964 claims alleged witness
In September 1964, Dr. Robert Jacobs watched a short video that changed his life. "I was part of a government cover-up for 17 years. I was the officer in charge of photographic instrumentation at Vandenberg Air Force Base from 1963 to 66." Bob Jacobs said in an October 2021 press conference. He was in charge of a 100-man unit responsible for photographing and videoing top secret intercontinental ballistic missile tests. Stationed in what is now Vandenberg Space Force Base near Los Angeles, California, his boss Major Mansmann asked him to install a new super long-range video camera system north in Big Sur. The new theodolite, or telescope, could "see with clarity at 160 miles! (257km) It was incredible," Jacobs described. Lieutenant Jacobs did as ordered. He took his team to Big Sur, a picturesque national park near Monterrey in Central California, and set up the massive new device. It proved much more capable than the previous system.
