FLASHBACK: The Peculiar Math That Could Underlie the Laws of Nature
New findings are fueling an old suspicion that fundamental particles and forces spring from strange eight-part numbers called "octonions." In 2014, a graduate student at the University of Waterloo, Canada, named Cohl Furey rented a car and drove six hours south to Pennsylvania State University, eager to talk to a physics professor there named Murat Günaydin. Furey had figured out how to build on a finding of Günaydin's from 40 years earlier — a largely forgotten result that supported a powerful suspicion about fundamental physics and its relationship to pure math. The suspicion, harbored by many physicists and mathematicians over the decades but rarely actively pursued, is that the peculiar panoply of forces and particles that comprise reality spring logically from the properties of eight-dimensional numbers called "octonions." As numbers go, the familiar real numbers — those found on the number line, like 1, π and -83.777 — just get things started. Real numbers can be paired up in...

Sex between men, not skin contact, is fueling monkeypox, new research suggests
The claim that skin-to-skin contact during sex between men, not intercourse itself, drives most monkeypox transmission is likely backward, a growing group of experts say. Since the outset of the global monkeypox outbreak in May, public health and infectious disease experts have told the public that the virus is largely transmitting through skin-to-skin contact, in particular during sex between men. Now, however, an expanding cadre of experts has come to believe that sex between men itself — both anal as well as oral intercourse — is likely the main driver of global monkeypox transmission. The skin contact that comes with sex, these experts say, is probably much less of a risk factor.

Data shows number of low-income audits could triple as IRS grows
The IRS audited 197 low-income families for every high-wealth family in 2019, according to the Government Accountability Office (GAO) — a number that some experts expected to climb under an IRS turbocharged with more money and manpower. Over the next decade, the Democrat's new "Inflation Reduction Act" will provide the IRS with 87,000 new agents and $80 billion in funding, with nearly $46 billion earmarked for enforcement. According to the Congressional Budget Office, the tax and spend bill is projected to bring in $203.7 billion in revenue from 2022 to 2031.

New Jersey teachers union condemns parents as 'extremist' in new ad
A New Jersey teachers union condemned parents who confront school officials at school board meetings as "extremist" in a new advertisement this week. The New Jersey chapter of the National Education Association (NEA), the largest teachers union in America, posted the short ad on YouTube. The ad flips back and forth between colorful photos of teachers with students and black-and-white photos of parents, arguing that the latter are trying to fuse politics with education. "When extremists start attacking our schools, that's not who we are," the video says. "People who only want to fight to score political points should take that somewhere else."

Saudi Arabia jails Leeds university student for 34 YEARS because she had a Twitter account and followed dissident activists
A Saudi student at Leeds University who returned to the kingdom for a holiday has been sentenced to 34 years in prison for having a Twitter account and for following and retweeting dissident activists. Salma al-Shebab, 34, was accused of using Twitter to 'cause public unrest and destabilise civil and national security' after she posted tweets calling for women's rights in Saudi Arabia. Al-Shebab, who has two young sons aged four and six, was initially sentenced to six years in prison but a Saudi terrorism court on Monday increased her jail-term to 34 years after the activist appealed her sentence.

Joe Biden's Inflation Reduction Act "secretly" brought to you by Bill Gates
The Democrats' "Inflation Reduction Act" - which according to the Congressional Budget Office will raise taxes on the middle class to the tune of $20 billion - not to mention unleash an army of IRS agents on working class Americans over the next decade, was made possible by Bill Gates and (in smaller part) Larry Summers, who have been known to hang out together. The bill, of course, was signed yesterday.

BEST OF THE WEB: 1,000 more deaths than usual EACH WEEK in UK as impact of lockdown kills more people than Covid - The Telegraph
The effects of lockdown may now be killing more people than are dying of Covid, official statistics suggest. Figures for excess deaths from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that around 1,000 more people than usual are currently dying each week from conditions other than the virus. The Telegraph understands that the Department of Health has ordered an investigation into the figures amid concern that the deaths are linked to delays to and deferment of treatment for conditions such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease. Over the past two months, the number of excess deaths not from Covid dwarfs the number linked to the virus. It comes amid renewed calls for Covid measures such as compulsory face masks in the winter.

German security official warns 'enemies of the state', regions already receiving TANKS in case 'it comes to the worst'
The current energy crisis and inflation could lead to protests in Germany's North Rhine-Westphalia, the region's interior minister has warned. Herbert Reul added that these issues are being exploited by conspiracy theorists, whom he described as a threat to the German state. Appearing on n-tv's Fruhstart program on Monday, Reul said that "we're now no longer talking about protesters, but rather almost something like new enemies of the state, who are establishing themselves there." The official expressed concern that, when things like the "energy crisis, prices, a cold living room" become "really tangible," conspiracy theorists' narratives could gain more currency among the population.

4 ft. of snow buries Argentinian ski resorts; Storms ease western Europe's drought - "cold, dark winter" looms
It's been snowing heavily all week ACROSS Southern Argentina. At Cerro Catedral, for example-a mountain near San Carlos de Bariloche-fierce conditions have been reported with flakes measuring an inch in diameter, according to snowbrains.com. The mountain has been closed for much of the week due to the inclement conditions and avalanche danger. As much as 4 feet of snow had already settled by Tuesday morning with the powder continuing to accumulate through Wednesday, forecast to persist throughout the remainder of the week. It's even been snowing in the town situated at the foot the mountain, "to the tune of half a foot during past 2-days alone," which, continues the snowbrains.com report, "is a rarity here".

Russia warns that US has doomed EU to hunger and cold
Washington has harmed the bloc to serve its own interests, a top Putin ally has warned The United States has doomed the EU to hunger, cold and isolation by pressuring the bloc to cut its ties with Moscow, Russian State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin said on Friday. He wrote on Telegram that Washington would "stop at nothing to cling to its power over the world as it throws under the bus the citizens' welfare and the economies of European countries to achieve this end." He noted that natural gas in the US costs $333 per 1,000 cubic meters. "At the same time, Washington sells it to Europe for a price which is 7.3 [times] higher, rendering the EU economy uncompetitive," he wrote, adding that the eurozone's annual inflation rate had hit a record 8.9%.

UK sees massive increases in excess deaths and serious ambulance call-outs
Excess deaths in England and Wales have been consistently high for months now. The latest week of data (5 August 2022) shows 1,350 excess deaths which is 14.4% higher than the 5-year average. Only 6.8% of these are involving COVID-19, even fewer directly caused by Covid. However, these are deaths in all ages and I was curious to find out where the increases are coming from. In previous years, after a bad flu season, you would expect fewer excess deaths due to deaths being pulled forwards. So why are we seeing so many excess deaths after Covid and in the middle of the summer? For this analysis I used the "Deaths registered weekly in England and Wales, provisional" datasets, compiled by the Office of National Statistics. I have used the figures from 2015-2019 to provide a five year average with which to compare as 2020-2021 are too disjointed.

Evidence that giant meteorite impacts formed Earth's continents
New research has provided the strongest evidence yet that Earth's continents were formed by giant meteorite impacts that were particularly prevalent during the first billion years or so of our planet's four-and-a-half-billion year history. New Curtin research has provided the strongest evidence yet that Earth's continents were formed by giant meteorite impacts that were particularly prevalent during the first billion years or so of our planet's four-and-a-half-billion year history. Dr Tim Johnson, from Curtin's School of Earth and Planetary Sciences, said the idea that the continents originally formed at sites of giant meteorite impacts had been around for decades, but until now there was little solid evidence to support the theory.

Scott Ritter: 'They've bankrupted themselves': Europe gutted its own security to funnel weapons to Kiev
Ukraine's European benefactors made a big show of rushing military aid to Kiev in the early months of Russia's special military operation, but the torrent has waned to a trickle since then, with no new pledges being made in July. One military expert said Europe is running out of both equipment and willpower to support the "horribly corrupt regime." Scott Ritter, a military analyst and former US Marine Corps intelligence officer, told Sputnik on Thursday that NATO's policy of giving Ukraine billions of dollars in weapons that so quickly get destroyed is "inefficient and counterproductive" from both a political and a national security point of view." The more Europe invests its military capacity into Ukraine, the weaker Europe gets," Ritter said.

'Best' UFO picture ever, the Calvine photo, found after 30 years missing
On August 4, 1990, two hikers near Calvine in Scotland took a photograph of a mysterious, diamond-shaped flying object hovering in the middle of the sky. For 32 years that image, dubbed the "Calvine photo," disappeared from the public eye, becoming the object of speculation, theories and myths. But now, the groundbreaking image has finally resurfaced thanks to the efforts of British journalist David Clarke. After 13 years of research, Clarke — who has worked as a curator for Britain's National Archives and is currently an associate professor at Sheffield Hallam University — found that former Royal Air Force (RAF) press officer Craig Lindsay had held on to a copy of the last remaining original print, waiting for someone to enquire about the mysterious image.

Oarfish from the ocean depths caught in the Mediterranean Sea in rare event
Many call it King of the Herring , others simply " oarfish ". Several indicate it as snake fish or scabbard fish; from the Ionian and Lucanian parts they also call it belt fish. Normally, it lives in the ocean depths and it is rare to see it in the Mediterranean . The fact is, that, in recent days, two fishing enthusiasts, Giandomenico Capodiferro from Laterza and Giovanni Torcivia from Taranto , have caught one two meters long. A rare specimen They were on the state-owned shoreline of Metaponto, a stone's throw from Marina di Ginosa. With their respective rods, equipped with artificial lures, they hoped for a fruitful day. Suddenly, the wire of the Capodiferro reed stretched beyond belief and from here an unusual adventure began. At first both thought it was a strap fish, in the following days, however, they had the confirmation that it was the oarfish. This fish usually lives in the ocean depths between 300 and 1000 meters . Not many are seen on the surface; but every time they...
