Largest summer sea ice extent since 2008 traps arctic ships - Coldest July airmass in 70 years blows through the Bering Strait
The mainstream are heat-chasers. They report only on stories that fit the AGW Party agenda. This cherry-picking leads to a painfully misinformed public when it comes to the climate - which is exactly where they want us. It usually stands, however, that if the MSM goes silent on a particular locale then it's probably because that particular locale isn't 'behaving' as they would like. A case in point today: we have the Arctic and Greenland refusing to play ball. Earth's most-northern reaches are actually experiencing persistent and long-lasting COOLING, which is far more telling than a brief burst of heat in, for example, Western Europe, which, 1) is forecast to be over before it's even really begun, and 2) can be tied to entirely natural forcings - namely low solar activity and a violently 'buckling' jet stream flow (more on that below). Summer Frosts In The Highlands Of Portugal & Spain, As Record Heat Sweeps Italy: Low Solar Activity & A ‘Meridional’ Jet Stream, Explained

The power troika trumps Biden in West Asia
The presidents of Russia, Iran, and Turkey convened to discuss critical issues pertaining to West Asia, with the illegal US occupation of Syria a key talking point. The Tehran summit uniting Iran-Russia-Turkey was a fascinating affair in more ways than one. Ostensibly about the Astana peace process in Syria, launched in 2017, the summit joint statement duly noted that Iran, Russia and (recently rebranded) Turkiye will continue, "cooperating to eliminate terrorists" in Syria and "won't accept new facts in Syria in the name of defeating terrorism." That's a wholesale rejection of the "war on terror" exceptionalist unipolarity that once ruled West Asia. Standing up to the global sheriff Russian President Vladimir Putin, in his own speech, was even more explicit. He stressed "specific steps to promote the intra-Syrian inclusive political dialogue" and most of called a spade a spade: "The western states led by the US are strongly encouraging separatist sentiment in some areas of the...

Fires threaten Athens' hillside suburbs for second day
Nearly 500 firefighters struggled to contain a large wildfire that threatened hillside suburbs outside Athens for a second day Wednesday, after hundreds of residents were evacuated overnight. At least two people were hospitalized with breathing problems and minor burns, while local officials said several houses had been burned in the fire around Mount Penteli, 25 kilometers (16 miles) northeast of the Greek capital. "The conditions are very challenging. The priority was to safeguard human life, critical infrastructure and private property," Fire Service spokesman Yiannis Artopios said. He said winds of up to 80 kilometers per hour (50 mph) were making air support difficult for fire crews.

UK armed forces introduce ban on use of sex workers abroad
Britain's armed forces have introduced a ban on the use of sex workers abroad for the first time as part of an attempt to stamp out sexual exploitation and abuse across the military. Personnel found to have engaged in what the Ministry of Defence describes as "transactional sex" face the prospect of dismissal - and they could also be prosecuted if in countries where prostitution is illegal. It is the first time a consistent prohibition across all three services has been introduced, ending a patchwork of policies and reflecting what the defence secretary, Ben Wallace, said on Tuesday was a change in social attitudes. Speaking at the Farnborough airshow, Wallace said he could not immediately explain why the policy had taken so many years to implement.

UK inflation hits new 40-year high of 9.4% as cost-of-living crisis deepens
U.K. inflation hit yet another new 40-year high in June as food and energy prices continued to soar, escalating the country's historic cost-of-living crisis. The consumer price index rose 9.4% annually, according to estimates out Wednesday, slightly above a consensus forecast among economists polled by Reuters and up from 9.1% in May. This represented a 0.8% monthly incline in consumer prices, exceeding the previous month's 0.7% rise but remaining short of the 2.5% monthly increase in April.

Lavrov: US and UK want 'real war' between Russia and EU
The US and UK want to escalate the Russia-Ukraine conflict into a larger confrontation between Moscow and members of the European Union, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Wednesday in an interview with RT and Sputnik. "Our American counterparts, British counterparts... with active support from Germans, the Polish and the Baltic states, they really want to turn this war into a real war and start a confrontation between Russia and European states," Lavrov told RT's editor-in-chief, Margarita Simonyan. The Western governments are "keeping Ukraine from any constructive steps" towards a peace settlement, Lavrov argued. "[Ukraine is] not just [being] pumped with weapons. They are forced to use these weapons in an increasingly riskier way."

Boston biotech Verve tests 'CRISPR 2.0′ in a patient for the first time
Scientists are rewriting the code of life with a new technology that promises to cure inherited diseases by precisely correcting genetic typos. Known as base editing, the technology empowers researchers to pick a single letter amongst the three billion that compose the human genome, erase it, and write a new letter in its place. Base editing is an updated version of the gene editing tool CRISPR, which has revolutionized life sciences research and is making strides in treating genetic blood and liver diseases. But some scientists think base editing, sometimes billed as CRISPR 2.0, could be safer and more precise than the original. And this summer, the sequel technology is being used in patients for the first time. On Tuesday, Boston biotech Verve Therapeutics announced it had edited the DNA of a person with a genetic condition that causes high cholesterol and predisposes them to heart disease. The base editor is designed to tweak a gene in the liver, curtail the accumulation of...

FLASHBACK: Revealed: Al Gore's real climate catastrophe
Next month is the thirtieth anniversary of the most entertaining and damning chapter in Al Gore's career. By the mid-nineteenth century, our knowledge of atmospheric chemistry was sufficiently advanced for a few sharp minds to ponder whether an increase in carbon dioxide might increase global temperature. The speculation remained entirely theoretical until 1957 when an international collaboration of top geophysicists — including the Soviets — used buoys, weather balloons and so forth to collect data. The undertaking was led by Dr Roger Revelle then based at California's Scripps Institute of Oceanography. Today's global warming debate is hyper-partisan but all agree Revelle's standing is impeccable. Before this research, many assumed the ocean was absorbing most of the increase in carbon dioxide caused by industrialisation. Revelle's data, however, indicated only half was. So what was happening to the other half? Would the planet soon overheat? The question dominated Revelle's...

Petr Akopov: As Putin visits Tehran, Russia and Iran are ready to create a strategic partnership
On Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin is visiting Iran for a fifth time. Is that a lot or a little? Well, if you count back to 2000, when he first became the leader of Russia, it doesn't seem like much. However, if you look at the dates of the visits, a very different picture emerges. It turns out that this trip is the fourth in the last seven years. Yes, Putin first came to Tehran in 2007, but his regular trips did not start until 2015. At the same time, all of Putin's visits have been of a working nature. He has never been to the Islamic Republic on an official tour. Each time his arrival was linked to a multilateral event held in the Iranian capital, such as The Caspian Forum, a summit of gas-exporting countries.

Russia warns of 'tougher' terms for talks with Ukraine
Moscow will make much harsher demands if and when talks on a peaceful settlement of the Ukraine conflict resume, Leonid Slutsky, a member of Moscow's negotiating team, has warned. "Today, the conditions on our part will be tougher regarding demilitarization and 'denazification'; tougher both in terms of essence and the timeframe of their implementation." Slutsky, who leads the Liberal Democratic Party (LDPR) in the Russian State Duma, said during a press conference on Tuesday. However, the parliamentarian pointed out that currently "Kiev doesn't show any eagerness to resume the negotiations." On Monday, Russian presidential aide Yury Ushakov also addressed the possibility of the resumption of talks with Ukraine, saying that Russia's demands would be "different" if the two sides sit down at the negotiating table now.

Biden's Mideast tour puts American impotence on display
What happens when you take a dysfunctional president, fly him oversees to meet with the dysfunctional government of a dysfunctional country, and have them discuss dysfunctional policy? Nothing. And that is exactly what transpired when US President Joe Biden traveled to Israel, where he met with interim Prime Minister Yair Lapid to discuss ongoing US effort to negotiate a return to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or JCPOA (popularly known as the Iran nuclear agreement). A quick history lesson — President Barack Obama helped bring the JCPOA to fruition back in 2015, over strenuous Israeli objections. In May 2018, President Donald Trump precipitously withdrew from the JCPOA after succumbing to Israeli pressure to do so. Since that time, both the US and Israel have come to regret that decision.

Julia Melnikova: World War Three is off - why NATO can't afford to have Russia as its main enemy
The world is currently changing so rapidly that the term 'new normal,' which first appeared in the business realm and later enriched diplomatic slang, has been added to the active vocabulary of not only all those who follow the news, but even those who don't. The NATO summit held in Madrid, last month, was rich in information, claiming to be one of the key political events of the summer of 2022. The gathering marked another milestone in relations between Moscow and Brussels, with the the continuing conflict between Russia and the West the main focus. First, a new Strategic Concept for the bloc was released, in which Russia was publicly declared its main security threat. Secondly, the procedure for Sweden and Finland's membership was officially launched, symbolically confirming the unity of the Euro-Atlantic camp. Thirdly, a number of measures and plans have been announced which are aimed at directly deterring Russia militarily. These are all alarming signals that create a...

Anti-gun zealots can't admit concealed carry saves lives
After a video of law enforcement officers acting like utter cowards at the Uvalde school shooting was released, Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., claimed that the incident "puts to bed, forever, the question of whether the way to deal with bad guys with guns is to make sure there are more good guys with guns." Well, "forever" ended this weekend, when a 22-year-old fatally shot a man armed with an AR-15 who had opened fire in a mall food court in Greenwood, Indiana, killing three. We don't know all the specifics — and we'll never know how many lives the Good Samaritan saved — but it is clear Murphy's assertion was incorrect on two counts: Cops who stand around while children are being slaughtered aren't "good guys," but real good guys with guns do exist.

The criminal focus of secret US biolabs now becomes apparent
Russia's special military operation to localize neo-fascist activities in Ukraine continues to receive more and more documentary evidence of the criminal plans and activities of the current government in Kiev, sponsored by Washington, as well in as the USA itself. This special operation has helped to publicize many secret programs for the development of biological weapons by the United States and its NATO allies in Ukraine. Documentary evidence was obtained of the research on dangerous pathogens, including the Ebola virus, the causative agent of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever, as well as many others (for by no means peaceful and humane purposes) by American, British, and German military biologists in Kiev and Odessa. It became known that the American company Metabiota was going to study the Ebola virus in Ukraine. Due to such experiments being prohibited in the USA over their inherent risk, they were transferred to Ukraine and other countries - as a rule, those where the...

Lost royal city of Natounia possibly discovered in Iraq
The ancient stronghold is believed to be part of the lost city of Natounia. Nestled in a valley shadowed by mountains in Iraqi Kurdistan sits an ancient fortress that archeologists think may be the lost, royal city of Natounia, based on the discovery of intricately carved rock reliefs depicting an ancient leader, a new study finds. The stronghold, known as Rabana-Merquly, was once part of the Parthian Empire (also known as the Arsacid Empire), which reigned(opens in new tab) between 247 B.C. and A.D. 224. The Parthians were bitter enemies of the Roman Empire, and fought various battles against them for over 250 years(opens in new tab). Now, new research at this 2,000-year-old fortress suggests that it served as one of the empire's regional centers. During a recent expedition, an international team of archeologists discovered twin rock reliefs(opens in new tab) at the two entrances to the settlement, which is situated at the base of Mount Piramagrun in the Zagros Mountains. Kissinger warns Biden against endless confrontation with China
Nixon's top diplomat, now 99, talks about US-China ties now, and says European leaders have lost continent's sense of direction Former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger said geopolitics today requires "Nixonian flexibility" to help defuse conflicts between the US and China as well as between Russia and the rest of Europe. While warning that China shouldn't become a global hegemon, the man who helped reestablish US-China ties in the 1970s said that President Joe Biden should be wary of letting domestic politics interfere with "the importance of understanding the permanence of China." "Biden and previous administrations have been too much influenced by the domestic aspects of the view of China," Kissinger, 99, said in an interview Tuesday in New York with Bloomberg News Editor-in-Chief John Micklethwait. "It is, of course, important to prevent Chinese or any other country's hegemony."

EU urges member states to 'voluntarily' slash gas use by 15%, declaration of emergency would make it mandatory
The European Union's executive body has urged member states to slash their gas consumption by 15%, as it warned that a complete shutdown of Russian supplies was "likely". Comment: Russia has been supplying gas to Europe throughout the West's proxy war, what developments up ahead make the EU establishment think that will change? The EU has been scrambling to wean itself off Russian gas since the invasion of Ukraine, but is alarmed about a potential energy crisis this winter. In response to EU support for Kyiv, the Kremlin has already stopped or reduced gas supplies to a dozen EU member states and is expected to send lower volumes of gas to Germany when the Nord Stream 1 pipeline reopens on Thursday after scheduled maintenance works. Comment: Not quite, Russia has only stopped gas to those countries that have refused to pay their bills, it also was forced to reduce supplies because Canada is, by their own admission, withholding a turbine that's critical to the pipelines function....

Germany weighing €8 billion bailout of energy giant Uniper, company is largest importer of Russian gas
The German government is looking at taking up to a 30% stake in utility firm Uniper, Reuters news agency and German newspaper Handelsblatt reported Wednesday. What do we know about the bailout package? Uniper is Germany's largest importer of Russian gas. The German government may intervene to save the company, amid the threat of reduced gas supplies by Russia and soaring prices, according to the reports. Sources told Reuters that the company may pass on some costs to German consumers in the framework of the rescue package. Comment: So, citizens will be paying twice. A German government spokesperson said Berlin is working on a deal to save the company, but would not provide further details.

BlackRock lost record breaking $1.7 trillion of clients money in six months
BlackRock Inc. is used to breaking records. The world's largest asset manager was the first company to exceed $10 trillion of assets under management. But the bigger they are, the harder they fall. And this year BlackRock achieved another record: the most money lost by a single company in a six-month period. In the first half of this year, it lost $1.7 billion of customer money. BlackRock management was quick to invoke the market carnage of the first half when it revealed the return on investment last week. "2022 ranks as the worst start in 50 years for both stocks and bonds," Chairman and CEO Larry Finck he said on his earnings call. While few companies can avoid what the market throws at them, some are at least trying to outdo it. BlackRock is giving up more and more: at the end of June, only about a quarter of its assets were actively managed to beat a benchmark, instead of tracking it smoothly as passive strategies are designed to do. That's less than a third when BlackRock...

A view from Donbass: Ukraine has treated the people of this region as sub-humans, this made peace impossible
The military conflict in Ukraine, which began on February 24, was preceded by a long war in Donbass. Over the course of eight years, it claimed the lives of at least 14,200 people (according to the OHCHR), over 37,000 were wounded, hundreds of thousands became refugees or had their homes destroyed. A de-escalation was achieved in February 2015, as both sides realized that a bad peace was better than a good war, and attempted to find a political resolution on the basis of the Minsk agreements. That, however, failed to bring peace to Donbass, which instead faced eight long years of economic and legal blockade, compounded by chaotic shelling of areas near the frontlines. They were eight hard years, which involved rebuilding bombed schools, hospitals, and houses, a rather humiliating dependence of formerly well-to-do people on humanitarian aid, an economic slump due to the economic blockade imposed by the Ukrainian government, restricted access to pensions, and the risk of being...
