Flash flood roars down Pipeline Fire burn scar near Flagstaff, Arizona
A wild week of monsoon weather had floodwater roaring down the Pipeline Fire burn scar near Flagstaff on Thursday. Tim Holt with the Arizona Game and Fish Department filmed the muddy water surging down the burn scar on the San Francisco Peaks. Holt was on the mountain helping with closures and said he knew where the flooding would be. "I saw the storm cell developing over the burn, the Pipeline Fire burn. I kinda knew what wash it would come down so I drove up there, into a safe location, so I could get good video while still being safe," said Holt.

Amidst Ukraine-Russia grain deal, US inserts itself into diplomatic efforts claiming it wants to help facilitate exports
The United States on Thursday sought to facilitate Russian food and fertilizer exports by reassuring banks, shipping and insurance companies that such transactions would not breach Washington's sanctions on Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine. Enabling those Russian exports is a key part of attempts by the United Nations and Turkish officials to broker a package deal with Moscow that would also allow for shipments of Ukraine grain from the Black Sea port of Odesa, which have been blockaded by the war. The written U.S. clarification came a day after Russia, Ukraine, Turkey and U.N. officials met in Istanbul for talks aimed at resuming Ukraine's grain exports. Turkey announced that the parties would return next week to sign a deal. Comment: Lest we forget that the US is primarily responsible for this catastrophe, has scuppered peace talks since the beginning, and has done next to nothing to facilitate this deal; except maybe realising that if it doesn't allow Ukraine to agree to the...

Spectacular waterspouts on both sides of Finnish gulf
Spectacular waterspouts have been snapped on both sides of the Gulf of Finland during the stormy conditions of recent days. Over the weekend, Madis Rehepapp, who is a member of the sea rescue association on the Estonian island of Muhu, spotted and photographed a waterspout at sea as he sat on his terrace at home, regional, Postimees-owned daily Saarte Hääl reports (link in Estonian). The phenomenon lasted 10 to 15 minutes, he said. Meanwhile one person who was on the sea during the rough conditions over the weekend said that they had not experienced anything like it.

Another insider trade: Pelosi's husband buys millions in computer chip stocks right before vote on massive subsidy
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's husband Paul bought up to $5 million in stock of a computer chip company ahead of a vote on a bill next week that would hand billions in subsidies to boost chip manufacturing, a financial disclosure shows. Paul Pelosi purchased 20,000 shares of Nvidia, one of the world's largest semiconductor companies, on June 17, according to the speaker's disclosure report released Thursday. Now, senators will convene as early as Tuesday to vote on a bipartisan competition bill, which allocates $52 billion to boost domestic semiconductor manufacturing and gives tax credits for production, Reuters reported Thursday.

Alice Springs, Australia suffers longest streak of sub-zero days on record Greenland refuses to melt as scheduled
The 'climate brigade' have gone quiet re. Australia in recent weeks, focusing instead on a slither of summer heat gripping Western Europe and a perfectly ordinary 'heat dome' building in the Central U.S. — and that's because it's bloody freezing Down Under, unprecedentedly cold, in fact. The middle of Australia is renowned for its scorching hot summers and year-round blue skies, not for its cold winters. However, this year the region has been buffeted by rare Antarctic blasts and, as a result, is suffering its coldest spell ever. The Northern Territory locale of Alice Springs has seen its thermometers sink below 0C (32F) for twelve consecutive mornings now, which, according to the Bureau of Meteorology - in books dating back 81 years - surpasses the previous longest streak of below-zero days set in July 1976 (solar minimum of cycle 19).

Media reports Russia has price cap-busting oil pricing plan
Moscow wants to create a crude pricing benchmark by next year as the West seeks to squeeze its profits, Bloomberg reports Russia has ramped up efforts to create its own national oil pricing benchmark as part of its response to Western efforts to limit its oil revenues, Bloomberg reported on Thursday, citing government and industry sources. According to the agency, the Western sanctions campaign, which was launched after Russia began its military operation in Ukraine, and the attempts to squeeze its oil export revenue with a proposed price cap, have reinvigorated the idea. US Treasury secretary Janet Yellen is attempting to set an upper limit on how much Moscow can charge for its crude exports. Some experts have warned that the scheme may backfire.

One dead as Morocco forest fires rage
Fires ravaging remote mountain forests in northern Morocco have killed at least one person and forced the evacuation of more than 1,000 families, officials said on Friday. Fanned by strong winds, the fires that broke out on Wednesday have destroyed 1,600 hectares (nearly 4,000 acres) of woodland in the provinces of Larache, Ouezzane, Taza and Tetouan, the authorities said. "The body of a person suffering from multiple burns has been found" amid one of the blazes in the Larache region, the authorities said in a statement.

White House 'diversity hire' Jean-Pierre's utter incompetence highlights identity politics failure
Just two months in, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre is the most monumental failure at the podium in recorded history: "It's been a rocky first month for White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre. Her answers have baffled reporters, and even made some of her White House colleagues wince." Imagine how bad her performance really has been to induce neoliberal Politico into writing such an unflattering intro paragraph. That's like a Hindu priest beating a sacred cow. Ordinarily, while covering a sacrosanct immigrant lesbian Person of Color© in such a position, Politico would fawn. Just how historically awful has Jean-Pierre been? More importantly, what lesson does her failure teach on the hollowness of leftist identity politics?

Disaster in Saudi Arabia as Biden keeps asking to meet Jafar
SAUDI ARABIA — President Biden's trip to Saudi Arabia got off to a rocky start, as Biden repeatedly asked the Crown Prince if he could meet Jafar. "So are you really, really sure you're not Jafar?" asked President Biden as he sat down with Mohammed bin Salman. "Well, maybe you can rub your magic lamp for me and then tell the genie my wish is to see Jafar! Wait, you don't even have a magic lamp? What kind of joke is this?! Come on, man!"

'Net Zero' global warming alarm based on temperatures measured next to airport runways with hot jet engines and tarmac
About one half of all land surface temperature measurements used to show global warming and promote the command-and-control Net Zero agenda are taken near or adjacent to airport runways. This amazing fact from research by Professor Ross McKitrick casts further serious doubt on the validity of three major global temperature datasets, including the one compiled by the Met Office, which continue to show higher global temperatures compared with other reliable measurements made by satellites and meteorological balloons. Airports are arguably uniquely unsuitable for providing an insight into global temperatures. Many of them are major industrial complexes spread over miles of heat-radiating tarmac and concrete, containing industrial buildings and subject to constant super-heated jet exhausts measuring hundreds of degrees centigrade. There are three major global surface datasets. HadCRUT is compiled by the University of East Anglia Climate Research Unit in collaboration with the Met...

75% of "poorly targeted" $800 billion PPP money sent to unintended recipients: Study
A multi-billion-dollar pandemic-era stimulus program meant chiefly to help small businesses keep staff on the payroll and hire back laid off employees was poorly targeted, with only about one-quarter of the money supporting jobs that would otherwise have disappeared, a new Fed report shows. Lockdowns and a collapse in consumer spending during the first wave of the pandemic drove fears that America's small business sector was at risk of a collapse. This prompted lawmakers in Congress to adopt a series of relief measures, including the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), which directed roughly $800 billion in forgivable loans to small businesses and other organizations hit by the crisis. At least 75 percent of the PPP funds were intended to maintain payrolls or hire back laid off employees and the remaining share could be earmarked for overhead costs like rent and utilities. But was this money well spent? That's the question researchers at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis sought...

Update: Texas grid operator takes emergency measures to avoid rolling blackouts as wind turbines fail to produce energy due to low winds
Texas grid operator ERCOT was forced to take unprecedented emergency measures on Wednesday to avoid rolling blackouts amid a heatwave as wind turbines failed to produce energy due to low winds. ERCOT manages electric power to more than 26 million Texas customers and represents 90% of the state's electric load, according to the company. On Monday ERCOT asked customers to voluntarily raise thermostats a degree or two, turn off lights, avoid using ovens, washing machines and dryers, and unplug appliances if possible during the hours of 2-8 pm. According to ERCOT, a heatwave along with very low winds is causing the latest conservation alert. In a press release it said: "Wind generation is currently generating significantly less than what it historically generated in this time period. Current projections show wind generation coming in less than 10 percent of its capacity." ERCOT was forced to take emergency action two days after it issued a conservation alert.

Lawmakers subpoena Secret Service for January 6 texts
The Congressional panel investigating the riot at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021 has subpoenaed the Secret Service for text messages that might shed light on the incident, after a government watchdog suggested the agency may have deleted them maliciously. In a letter written to Secret Service Director James Murray on Friday, Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Mississippi) said the House committee had subpoenaed the policing authority to produce a series of text messages originally sent on January 5 and 6. It was given a July 19 deadline to provide the documents to Congress.

Biden proved that Israel is a US proxy in the Middle East
American President Joe Biden landed in Israel on Wednesday and started his four-day tour of the Middle East, the first since he took office. Moments after landing in Tel Aviv, he delivered a speech which outlined his intentions during this controversial tour. Biden has visited Israel several times before becoming president, with his first trip being in 1973 when he was a senator. He has repeatedly expressed his absolute support for Israel, regardless of its daily abuses of Palestinians and continuous violations against their legitimate rights. In his speech on Wednesday, he repeated his support for the occupation state, highlighting that he is a Zionist Christian; emphasising that supporters of Israel don't need to be Jews. He also told the journalist: "As president, I'm proud to say that our relationship with the State of Israel is deeper and stronger, in my view, than it's ever been. And with this visit, we are strengthening our connections even further. We've reaffirmed the...

Italy may soon be unable to arm Ukraine - foreign minister
Political turmoil in Italy could soon see Rome unable to continue supporting Ukraine with weapons deliveries, the country's foreign minister has warned. According to Luigi Di Maio, this would be the case should the incumbent government not survive a no-confidence vote next week. In a phone interview with US media outlet Politico on Friday, Di Maio said that those in Italy who want the collapse of Prime Minister Mario Draghi's government are playing into the hands of the Kremlin. "The Russians are right now celebrating having made another Western government fall," the minister argued. Di Maio went on to express doubt as to whether Italy will be able to keep supplying arms to Ukraine under these circumstances, adding that "it is one of the many serious problems."

WH suggests breaching dams to save endangered salmon, even though it would worsen energy and supply chain issues
The Biden administration's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) recommended breaching dams on the Snake River to ensure the survival of endangered salmon — a move that could jeopardize power supplies in the Pacific Northwest and worsen the supply chain crisis. A Monday draft report from the agency suggested that the four lower Snake River dams should be breached to decrease travel time for salmon, as well as reduce stress on juvenile fish and encounters with powerhouses. The "earthen portion of each dam would be removed, and a naturalized river channel would be established around the concrete spillway and powerhouse structures," according to the report. The dams, however, provide 3,033 megawatts of capacity to the Pacific Northwest, according to a 2016 fact sheet from the Bonneville Power Administration. The entity added this month that replacing the dams would cost $415 million to $860 million per year until 2045, amounting to a total cost of up to $19.6 billion...

Saudi prince reminds Biden of US torture in Iraq
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman allegedly called out Washington's long track of "mistakes" made in Iraq and Afghanistan as President Joe Biden confronted him over the gruesome murder of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi. That's according to Reuters, quoting a statement made by a senior Saudi official to Reuters on Saturday. While Saudi Arabia admitted its "mistakes" made in the Khashoggi affair, it has "taken all measures to prevent similar mistakes in the future," the crown prince, commonly referred-to by the acronym MBS, was quoted as having told Biden. MBS also apparently tried to downplay the significance of the murder of the journalist, who was slain and subsequently dismembered at the Saudi consulate in Turkey in 2018, pointing a finger at the US' own questionable record of human rights abuses. He also brought up the recent killing of Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, slain during an Israeli raid in the West bank.

US Navy provokes China in South China Sea for second time in just 4 days
A US Navy warship on Saturday challenged Chinese claims to disputed islands in the South China Sea, the US 7th Fleet said in a statement -- the second operation of its kind this week. The guided-missile destroyer USS Benfold sailed near the Spratly Islands -- known as the Nansha Islands in China -- in the southeastern South China Sea in a so-called "freedom of navigation operation" (FONOP), the 7th Fleet statement said. The US Navy operation in the island chain where China has built military foritifications on man-made islands challenged "restrictions on innocent passage imposed by the People's Republic of China (PRC), Vietnam, and Taiwan," the statement said.
