Putin promises normal business environment for companies that remain
Russia faces unprecedented sanctions pressure that continues to intensify, President Vladimir Putin said on Monday, noting that despite the prevailing conditions, the country's economy has the opportunity to function stably and smoothly. He has promised to support businesses as much as possible, including foreign firms that have stayed in Russia. To do that, it is necessary to respect the rights of business owners and support them to the full, including by reducing the administrative burden, Putin said. Foreign companies that have remained in Russia despite sanctions pressure should be allowed to "work peacefully," he added. The Russian president earlier instructed the government to allocate additional resources to support small and medium-sized businesses and create better growth conditions for new industries based on new and yet-to-be-developed supply chains. Putin also said he believes that sanctions will result in new leaders emerging in the Russian market.

Obama, Clinton rail against free speech under guise of fighting 'misinformation'
Over the last 24 hours, former President Barack Obama and twice-failed presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton have come out against free speech - calling for big tech to go further to censor views they disagree with. On Thursday, Obama told an audience at Stanford University that tech companies are "turbo-charging some of humanity's worst impulses," adding "One of the biggest reasons for the weakening of democracy is the profound change that's taken place in how we communicate and consume information." He then said that people are 'dying because of disinformation.'

Europe's big energy problems and the birth of a new relationship with Russia
"Energy makes energy anyhow So spend yourself and get rich right now" — Marillion "Rich" This day has been a long time coming. From the moment, more than a decade ago, when it was finally admitted that Europe was destined to be an energy importer, we were going to see the climax of the showdown between the West and Russia. Europe as energy importer always meant that time was on Russia's side. All it had to do was draw the conflict out long enough, survive long enough, to force Europe into submission. Russia has the energy Europe needs, no one else can supply it, therefore the final decision will be to accept this fate. No amount of financial wizardry, pathetic virtue signaling about Climate Change, malinvestment into inefficient and unsustainable 'renewables,' or military threats would ultimately change the outcome of this story. Output off the North Slope has fallen off and Groningen's gas fields are drying up faster than Hillary's va-jay-jay with each twist of John Durham's...

Boris Johnson to face investigation into whether he misled MPs over partygate
Boris Johnson has been referred by MPs to a parliamentary investigation by the privileges committee into whether he deliberately misled the Commons over Downing Street parties. A Labour Party motion, which cites four separate comments made by the Prime Minister about the scandal, passed without division as it became clear it had the overwhelming support of those present in the Commons. The privileges committee will now investigate Mr Johnson's statement to MPs in December that "the guidance was followed and the rules were followed at all times".

BEST OF THE WEB: Nearly third of Le Pen backers say French presidential election is rigged
Almost a third of Marine Le Pen's voters believe that the French presidential election has been rigged, according to an opinion poll. The survey by the Ifop institute underlined widespread distrust with the electoral process, notably among supporters of the populist National Rally candidate. The findings were published as Le Pen, 53, prepared to face President Macron, 44, in a televised debate tomorrow before the second round of voting on Sunday.

Bans on Russian athletes are ripping out a huge piece of the sporting world
When was the last time a Western athlete was banned because their country started a war? One of the unspoken rules of human affairs is that ordinary citizens should never be personally harassed for the political actions of their leaders. That truism has never been properly observed enough, and went completely out of the window when Russia began its military operation in Ukraine. This week, Serbian tennis sensation Novak Djokovic delivered a powerful rebuke to Wimbledon's decision to bar the participation of Russian players from the famous grass tournament. Referring to himself as a "child of war" who experienced the "emotional trauma" of the US-led 78-day NATO bombardment of his native town of Belgrade in 1999, Djokovic described the banning of Russian players at the prestigious tennis tournament as "crazy." "I cannot support the decision of Wimbledon, I think it is crazy," the world's top-ranked player said. "When politics interferes with sport, the result is not good."

Far-right Le Pen plots parliament win after loss to Macron
French far-right leader Marine Le Pen gathered her party's troops on Monday, not to mourn her loss a day earlier in the French presidential election but to plot how to orchestrate a victory in June's parliamentary vote and capture a majority of seats in the National Assembly. Centrist President Emmanuel Macron beat her 58.5% to 41.5% to win reelection Sunday but Le Pen produced her highest-ever level of support in her three attempts to become France's leader. That gave the 53-year-old nationalist momentum as she charged into what is called the "third round" of voting, hoping to turn the tables on Macron's majority in parliament. Le Pen called a national meeting of her far-right National Rally party on Monday. French media reports that Le Pen told party officials she would seek to renew representing her working-class stronghold in northern France could not be immediately confirmed. Le Pen's high support Sunday laid bare a European Union nation that is fractured between those she...

Time might not exist, according to physicists and philosophers - but that's okay
Does time exist? The answer to this question may seem obvious: of course it does! Just look at a calendar or a clock. But developments in physics suggest the non-existence of time is an open possibility, and one that we should take seriously. How can that be, and what would it mean? It'll take a little while to explain, but don't worry: even if time doesn't exist, our lives will go on as usual. A crisis in physics Physics is in crisis. For the past century or so, we have explained the universe with two wildly successful physical theories: general relativity and quantum mechanics. Quantum mechanics describes how things work in the incredibly tiny world of particles and particle interactions. General relativity describes the big picture of gravity and how objects move.

Elon Musk buys Twitter in $44 billion deal
Twitter said Monday it has agreed to sell itself to Elon Musk in a roughly $44 billion deal that has the potential to expand the billionaire's business empire and put the world's richest man in charge of one of the world's most influential social networks. The deal, which will take the company private, caps off a whirlwind period in which the Tesla and SpaceX CEO became one of Twitter's largest shareholders, was offered and turned down a seat on its board and bid to buy the company — all in less than a month. Under the terms of the deal, shareholders will receive $54.20 in cash for each share of Twitter stock they own, matching Musk's original offer and marking a 38% premium over the stock price the day before Musk revealed his stake in the company. "Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated," Musk said in a statement Monday. "Twitter has tremendous potential — I look...

Four-metre great white shark attacks family's tiny boat off Western Australia
A family has captured the terrifying moment a 'four-metre' great white shark monstered their boat while out on a fishing trip. David Tuckfield was out on the water off the coast of Mandurah, south of Perth, last Friday with his wife Kunya and 14-year-old son when they spotted the shark lurking beneath the surface. The great white, which Mr Tuckfield estimated to be about four metres long, swam right up to the side of the boat, opening its mouth up wide and using its razor sharp teeth to chomp down on the boat's outboard motor. The shark continued circling the family for an hour, giving them a Good Friday they'll never forget.

Not lookin' good for the Big Guy: Joe Biden met with Hunter Biden business partner at the White House
Hunter Biden's closest business partner made at least 19 visits to the White House and other official locations between 2009 and 2015, including a sitdown with then-Vice President Joe Biden in the West Wing. Visitor logs from the White House of former President Barack Obama reviewed by The Post cast further doubt over Joe Biden's claims that he knew nothing of his son's dealings. Eric Schwerin met with Vice President Biden on November 17, 2010 in the West Wing, when he was the president of the since-dissolved investment fund Rosemont Seneca Partners.
