This week in volcano news - Mount Rainier earthquake swarm, large eruption at Karymsky
In the last week, several major volcano related news stories broke. In Washington state, the dangerous volcano known as Mount Rainier produced a swarm of earthquakes directly underneath its glacier covered peak. Meanwhile in Alaska, part of the Aleutians received large volumes of sulfur dioxide which originated from a very large eruption of the Karymsky volcano in Russia. And, in New Zealand, the Ruapehu volcano is continuing to show signs of unrest as it has been producing its longest period of volcanic tremor since 2002.

Waterspout filmed on Lake Samish, Washington
The National Weather Service is looking into reports of a waterspout on Lake Samish. The waterspout happened sometime between 6:30 and 8 p.m. Monday evening on the lake near Bellingham. Officials say a video showed the waterspout quickly dissipated as it moved onshore. Although the NWS said it did not cause significant damage, it did move two small boats and patio furniture along the shore.

Disney has lost $34 billion in value since embarking on culture war with Florida
Disney's market cap has shrunk by nearly $34 billion since the company expressed its full-throated opposition to a Florida law banning instruction of gender identity and sexual orientation in public schools for kindergarten through third grade. Florida lawmakers in March passed HB 1557, dubbed by opponents as the "Don't Say Gay" bill, which was signed into law by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on March 28. That same day, Disney waded deeply into the controversy, issuing a statement that was highly critical of HB 1557, saying it was the company's objective to have it repealed. From March 28, the day the company issued the statement, to April 22, Disney's market cap has fallen by roughly $33.9 billion.

Anglo-Saxon royalty and nobles ate a similar diet to land-owning peasants, new research reveals
Anglo-Saxon kings were mostly vegetarian before the Vikings settled, according to new studies. Cambridge University researchers analysed more than 2,000 skeletons and found elites ate no more meat than other social groups. One study also suggested peasants occasionally hosted lavish meat feasts for their rulers. Researchers said the findings overturned major assumptions about early medieval English history. Cambridge University bioarchaeologist Sam Leggett drew her conclusions after analysing chemical signatures of diets preserved in the bones of 2,023 people buried in England from the 5th to 11th Centuries. Comment: Note that 536AD has been called 'the worst year to be alive' because of the catastrophies that were visited across vast swathes of Europe, and so it is in the context that the Anglo-Saxons - whose official history is up for debate - emerged: 536 AD: Plague, famine, drought, cold, and a mysterious fog that lasted 18 months

Haul of hundreds of stuffed endangered animals worth €29m seized by police in Spain
Police in Spain have seized one of the largest hauls of taxidermy animals in Europe as they investigate potential smuggling, after a warehouse in Valencia was found to contain stuffed rhinos, polar bears, elephants and other animals. Comment: And expertly done too; likely for discerning, and wealthy, clientelle. It's probably no surprise that we rarely see them convicted. The Guardia Civil discovered more than 1,000 specimens in a 50,000 sq metre (538,000 sq ft) industrial warehouse in Bétera, Valencia, on Wednesday, it said in a statement on Sunday. The haul included more than 400 protected species, including some that have been extinct in the wild, such as the scimitar oryx, or severely threatened, such as the Bengal tiger. Others included lions, leopards, cheetahs and lynx.

'I don't care what a bunch of 19-year-old gender-studies students think,' says boss of new publishing imprint offering a home to 'cancelled' authors
Mavericks, apostates, contrarians: all are welcome at Forum, a new publishing imprint catering to the "politically homeless". As the industry finds itself lurching from one cancel-culture row to the next, with authors seeing their books commissioned and then scrapped before even reaching publication, the outfit - current team size: one - hopes to become the "go-to publisher for anyone who doesn't easily fit in with the orthodoxies and intellectual policing that have become so common in the 21st century". It's being headed up by George Owers, a 33-year-old ex-Labour councillor and "Tory socialist" who has strong opinions about the current state of the industry. "There's a lot of spinelessness in publishing [and] a very narrow band of political views," he says when we meet in a Cambridge pub. "You'd be hard pressed to find somebody who votes Tory, or even somebody who has the views that 90 per cent of the rest of the population have on all kinds of issues like Brexit or trans...

Marxists seek to destabilize American society through sexualization of young people: James Lindsay
Young people in the United States are being subjected to communist-style sexualization, according to author and expert James Lindsay. The goal is to destabilize society to make it ripe for communists to grab power, Lindsay, author of "Race Marxism" and "Cynical Theories: How Activist Scholarship Made Everything about Race, Gender, and Identity―and Why This Harms Everybody," recently told EpochTV's "China Insider" program. And their plan has been afoot for more than a century.

Australia's Defence Minister claims China could 'launch chemical attack on capital city'
Australia's Defence Minister has doubled down on concerns China is a growing threat, claiming the nation could mount a chemical attack in the next four years. Peter Dutton made the extraordinary admission during a wide-ranging interview with News Corp Australia. He claimed his fears over China's military strength and strategic position were echoed by defence chiefs across the country. Comment: These are indeed threats to the West because they could thwart their failing attempts to subjugate much of the planet.

N.Y. appeals court strikes down Dem-drawn congressional map, declares it illegal
A New York state appeals court has struck down a congressional redistricting map drawn by the state's Democratic majority that heavily favored the party as unconstitutional. The court on Thursday ruled that the map "was drawn to discourage competition," and was therefore illegal, giving the state until the end of the month to draw a new one, The Hill reported. Judges also noted that they considered testimony from an elections analysis expert, as well as a comparison of the 2012 and 2022 maps, and "evidence of the largely one-party process used to enact the 2022 congressional map." The court noted as well that there was nearly no Republican participation in drawing the new maps and that GOP input was actually excluded by Democratic leaders when they drafted them. As such, the court said, no Republican lawmakers in the state voted in favor of the map.

Mystery over FOUR 'suspicious suicides' of Russian gas executives 'linked to Putin'
Four recent 'suicides' of high profile Russian gas industry executives 'with links to Vladimir Putin' are all suspicious, sources have claimed. Two wealthy businessmen were found dead along with their family members this week in Madrid and Moscow, but now suspicions are being raised about two Kremlin-linked figures who died earlier this year. On Tuesday, the body of Sergey Protosenya, 55, was found hanged outside a Spanish villa, with his wife Natalia, 33, and their teenage daughter Maria found hacked to death with an axe inside. Investigators initially assumed that Protosenya, who had a fortune of £330million, had killed himself in the Lloret det Mar villa in the Costa Brava. But local reports said evidence does not conclusively point towards this explanation, as no suicide note was found in the property and it appeared steps had been taken to ensure there were no fingerprints on the murder weapons.

Former intelligence officials, citing Russia, say Big Tech monopoly power is vital to national security
When the U.S. security state announces that Big Tech's centralized censorship power must be preserved, we should ask what this reveals about whom this regime serves. A group of former intelligence and national security officials on Monday issued a jointly signed letter warning that pending legislative attempts to restrict or break up the power of Big Tech monopolies — Facebook, Google, and Amazon — would jeopardize national security because, they argue, their centralized censorship power is crucial to advancing U.S. foreign policy. The majority of this letter is devoted to repeatedly invoking the grave threat allegedly posed to the U.S. by Russia as illustrated by the invasion of Ukraine, and it repeatedly points to the dangers of Putin and the Kremlin to justify the need to preserve Big Tech's power in its maximalist form. Any attempts to restrict Big Tech's monopolistic power would therefore undermine the U.S. fight against Moscow. While one of their central claims is that Big...

Twitter reconsiders Elon Musk's takeover bid after $46.5 billion in financing secured
Twitter is reportedly re-examining SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk's $43 billion offer to buy the Big Tech company after he revealed that he has now secured $46.5 billion for the potential buyout. According to The Wall Street Journal, Twitter had been ready to reject the offer, but will take a new look at it after the business magnate revealed his filing with the SEC showing that he has lined up financing for the offer. The financing includes $22.5 billion which will come from his own equities. People familiar with the matter told The Wall Street Journal that the revelation makes it more likely for Twitter to seek to negative the offer with Musk. "The situation is fast-moving and it is still far from guaranteed Twitter will do so," The Wall Street Journal noted.

Former DNI says Dem law firm Perkins Coie 'subject to indictment' in Durham probe
Former Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe on Sunday accused a leading Democratic lawmaker of intentionally peddling a false narrative against then-President Donald Trump ahead of the 2020 election to sway the outcome while adding that a noted Democrat-aligned law firm could also be guilty of a criminal "conspiracy" during the 2016 election cycle. In an interview with Fox News' Maria Bartiromo, Ratcliffe, a former U.S. Representative from Texas who left Congress to serve as DNI during the latter portion of Trump's term, pointed a finger at House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) as well as the entire Perkins Coie law firm, the latter of which could eventually be indicted by special counsel John Durham, he said.

FLASHBACK: At the Zero Hour in Kharkiv
Ten hours before Russia's invasion of Ukraine, I was in Kyiv. I responded to a knock on my door to find my Belarusian flatmate asking for advice. She and her partner had recently fled political persecution in Belarus and weren't thrilled about packing up again. What did I think? I said it was imperative she left immediately — not tomorrow, but tonight. For months we had been reading intelligence assessments claiming an invasion was likely, even telling us the exact day. Each time, it would pass with no invasion. But tomorrow it's really happening! No matter how convincing the intelligence and how clear the indicators were, there was an equally legitimate sense of incredulity. I didn't expect to see any action in Kyiv, let alone from afar, so I was heading to the eastern city of Kharkiv to see things for myself. As I left, the ambient mood around me was anxious and uncertain. War would be terribly costly for Russia: a fractured Europe would unite, Russia would become a global...

Trump showcases trailer of explosive '2000 Mules' documentary of the 2020 election fraud
Former President Donald Trump on Saturday evening played the trailer of the forthcoming explosive documentary "2000 Mules" which reveals a wide scale ballot trafficking network of ballot harvesters across several swing states. Trump played the trailer at the rally where he is campaigning with J.D. Vance, the candidate he endorsed for U.S. Senate in this year's Ohio GOP Senate primary. The documentary, the product of a years-long investigation by election integrity group True The Vote and produced by conservative filmmaker Dinesh D'Souza, has been long-awaited and is chock full of surveillance footage showing specific instances of people taking multiple ballots to drop boxes and making trips to several boxes around their states. The investigation has been anticipated since Breitbart News first revealed it last summer, and Trump has been hyping it for some time now in statements and commentary.

Taking away special privileges for woke corporations is not "authoritarian"
For many years now I have been pointing out that there is a false public perception of the relationship between governments and corporations. In the past the belief has been that government is supposed to keep private business in check while private business is supposed to limit government intrusion through the assertion of property rights. But when it comes to major corporations there is no such game of balance. In reality, international conglomerates like Disney generally do whatever they please because they are PARTNERS with government. For whatever reason, certain companies are afforded special treatment by state and federal institutions and what this does is create problems. This is not a free market system, rather, it is socialist and monopolistic. Subsidies and incentives can sometimes be used to encourage business growth, but when they are afforded to only a tiny handful of mega-corporations the result is the opposite; the growth of competition is stifled and small to...

Musk victory: Reuters reports Twitter accepts Elon's original $43 billion offer
The world's richest man is set to complete his hostile takeover of Twitter for $43 billion, according to news reports. Reuters released an exclusive saying that Twitter is "nearing a deal to sell" itself to Tesla CEO Elon Musk for "$54.20 per share in cash." That was the original price Musk offered when he launched his bid to own the company. Twitter may announce the deal "later on Monday once its board has met to recommend the transaction to Twitter shareholders, the sources said." The latest development follows reports that Twitter was reconsidering Musk's offer after he secured $46.5 billion in financing to back his takeover. Musk was reportedly "exploring a tender offer to purchase some or all shares of the company directly from its shareholders" after Twitter's board failed to respond to his initial offer.

Five Greens/EFA MEPs launch legal action for access to information on vaccine contract transparency
Today, Greens/EFA MEPs Margrete Auken, Kim van Sparrentak, Tilly Metz, Jutta Paulus, and Michele Rivasi submitted an application to the European Court of Justice against the European Commission, requesting access to key information on the Commission's contracts with pharmaceutical companies on the purchase agreements of COVID-19 vaccines. This court case follows the Commission's repeated refusal to provide the public with anything but heavily redacted versions of the contracts. The redactions made it impossible to understand the content of the agreements. Transparency builds trust in the institutions' ability to roll out public health programmes.

Leslie Dowless, key figure in NC absentee ballot fraud probe, dies
Leslie McCrae Dowless Jr., the key player in a North Carolina absentee ballot fraud probe that led to a do-over congressional election, has died. His daughter, Andrea Dowless Heverly, wrote that her father "passed away peacefully" Sunday morning, according to a social media post. He had been diagnosed with an advanced form of lung cancer and died at his daughter's home in Bladen County, his friend Jay DeLancy told The Associated Press in a brief interview. Dowless was in his mid-60s. The political operative was set to go on trial this summer on more than a dozen state criminal counts related to absentee ballot activities for the 2016 general election and the 2018 primary and general elections. A half-dozen others were also charged.
