94 people who attended New Jersey high school developed extremely rare brain tumor
A cancer survivor is vowing to untangle the twisted mystery of why almost 100 people associated with a New Jersey high school have developed "extremely" rare malignant brain tumors. Al Lupiano is among the 94 former staff and students from Colonia High School in the Woodbridge Township School District who have been stricken by the devastating diagnoses in recent years. "I will not rest until I have answers," Lupiano, 50, declared in an interview with NJ.com and the Star-Ledger on Thursday. "I will uncover the truth." Among the others diagnosed with brain cancer was Lupiano's younger sister, who passed away from the disease in February at the age of 44.

Trudeau government considering up to $4k new tax on pickups
The Trudeau government is considering a recommendation to hit pickup trucks with a new tax that could cost Canadians between $1,000 and $4,000 per truck. If the tax is approved, popular light-duty trucks such as the Ford F-150, Ram 1500, and Chevrolet Silverado would be charged $1,000, while heavy duty trucks used to tow equipment like the Ram 3500 would pay $4,000. The Ministry of the Environment released a 271-page report that includes a recommendation to subject pickup trucks to a levy that varies from $1,000 on light-duty trucks to $4,000 on super-duty trucks. Comment: Meet the Ministry of Environment, MP Steven Guilbeault Right now, the Green Levyapplies to large SUVs and passenger vans that use more than 13 litres of fuel per 100km. Pickup trucks are expressly exempt from the current tax. This new recommendation urges the Trudeau government to lift that exemption and to hit pickups with the tax.

Letter to the California Legislature
"Never has our future been more unpredictable, never have we depended so much on political forces that cannot be trusted to follow the rules of common sense and self-interest — forces that look like sheer insanity, if judged by the standards of other centuries." Hannah Arendt, The Origins of Totalitarianism I am writing to urge No votes on AB2098, SB1390, AB1797, SB1464, SB871, SB866, and SB1479, and part of a decalogue of medical tyranny bills (down to seven now that SB1184 passed on April 5 while AB 1993 and the HIPAA-violating SB 920 were pulled). AB2098 threatens to strip physicians and surgeons of their licenses for "unprofessional conduct," which it defines as: disseminat[ing] or promot[ing] misinformation or disinformation related to COVID-19, including false or misleading information regarding the nature and risks of the virus, its prevention and treatment; and the development, safety, and effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines." Sergey Karaganov: "We are at war with the West. The European security order is illegitimate"
Sergey Karaganov has served as a presidential advisor in the Kremlin both under Boris Yeltsin and Vladimir Putin. He is still considered close to Russia's president and foreign minister Sergey Lavrov. His recent proposals on Russian-speaking minorities in the "near abroad" are known as "Putin doctrine" and Professor Karaganov, who is honorary chair of the Moscow think tank the Council for Foreign and Defense Policy, was first to come out publicly about an all-out invasion of Ukraine in 2019. President Putin has mentioned on Feb. 24 that Ukraine's accession to NATO warrants Russia's military intervention to prevent it. However, Ukraine didn't even have a Membership Action Plan for NATO and Germany's chancellor Olaf Scholz clearly stated accession was many, many years off. How can an attack be justified on such grounds? For 25 years people like myself have said that NATO expansion would lead to war. Putin said several times that if it came to Ukraine becoming a member of NATO, there...

Ukraine helicopters shell two more Russian villages, Moscow launches retaliatory airstrikes on missile factory, Polish private mercenary base in Kharkov
Another Russian village located near the border with Ukraine was shelled on Thursday, Vyacheslav Gladkov, the governor of the Belgorod Region, has claimed. Earlier on Thursday it was reported that two Ukrainian helicopters were responsible for an attack on the border village of Klimovo in Bryansk Region, and in a separate incident a border crossing some 40km southwest of Klimovo was shelled. The village of Spodaryushino in Belgorod Region was also targeted, Gladkov wrote on Telegram. "There are no injuries or fatalities among the civilian population," he said, adding that damage to property was also avoided. The residents of Spodaryushino and the nearby village of Bezymeno have been evacuated to safety, while additional security personnel were deployed at both locations, according to the governor.

Ex-CEO of Reddit Yishan Wong on why Elon Musk shouldn't buy Twitter
Comment: Yishan Wong posted a long thread on Twitter giving a rather unique insider perspective on Big Tech social media platforms and why it's not in Musk's best interest to buy Twitter. The entire thread is republished below (with formatting edits). Original thread found here. I've now been asked multiple times for my take on Elon's offer for Twitter. So fine, this is what I think about that. I will assume the takeover succeeds, and he takes Twitter private. (I have little knowledge/insight into how actual takeover battles work or play out) (long 🧵)

Japanese encephalitis outbreak kills 3 in Australia, first cases ever recorded in some regions, follows record flooding
Severe floods that hit parts of eastern Australia earlier this year sowed death and millions of dollars of destruction. The heavy rainfall events also appear to have ushered in another unwanted effect: Japanese encephalitis. Normally confined to the tropics, the viral disease has now turned up in parts of Australia that have never experienced it before. So far the outbreak has affected at least 34 people and caused three deaths, The Washington Post reports. "With accelerating climate change, we're going to be in a world of hurt," Tim Inglis, the head of pathology and laboratory medicine at the University of Western Australia, tells the newspaper, "with some of these diseases that have in the past been restricted in the tropics extending, as we're beginning to see." Comment: The climate is indeed changing, however it's clearly not because of CO2 emissions, and, overall, the planet is cooling: Antarctica's Adélie penguins happier with less sea ice, research shows ice is growing

US congressman reveals seats on committees are 'literally' bought
Seats on Congress' most powerful committees are literally offered for sale to special interest groups, said Representative Mo Brooks. In a video that circulated online on Friday, Alabama Representative Mo Brooks told supporters that an entrenched system of corruption prevents Congress from passing legislation that would benefit the average American. Brooks said that both parties charge their members $1 million and beyond for chairmanships of committees, and that only those taking donations from lobbyists can afford these seats. "Special interest groups run Washington, and I don't mean that metaphorically. I mean literally," Brooks told supporters at an event in March, video footage of which was shared on Friday by conservative pundit Lauren Windsor.

Texts from Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) and Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) obtained by CNN show the two men sought to aid Meadows on how former President Trump should proceed, including in his legal strategy. The texts show in the early days following the election, both men lended their support to Trump.

Judge rejects Stacey Abrams' bid for unlimited campaign contributions
Georgia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams cannot immediately begin raising and spending unlimited campaign contributions under a state law passed last year because she is not yet her party's nominee, a federal judge ruled Thursday. Abrams and her One Georgia committee filed a lawsuit last month challenging the constitutionality of the new law, which allows certain top elected officials and party nominees to create "leadership committees" that can raise campaign funds without limits. But they also asked the judge to order the state ethics commission not to take any action against them if they continue to raise money before the primary next month. "This Court will not rewrite Georgia law to enable One Georgia to stand in the same shoes as a leadership committee that, in Plaintiffs' view, is operating in violation of the First Amendment," U.S. District Judge Mark Cohen wrote in his order.

Musk responds to reports of Twitter's 'poison pill' tactic to foil his takeover bid
Twitter is reportedly considering a so-called "poison pill" tactic to thwart Elon Musk's effort to buy out the social media platform, prompting a critical response from the Tesla chief. Cameron Winklevoss, founder of the Gemini cryptocurrency exchange, said in a tweet that "Twitter is considering a poison pill to thwart @elonmusk's offer," while two anonymous sources told The New York Times that Twitter's board is mulling the tactic, which is used to block hostile takeovers. The poison pill method gives existing shareholders the right to buy additional shares at a discount, diluting outstanding stock and making a hostile takeover more financially challenging for the acquirer. Responding to Winklevoss' tweet, Musk said a "poison pill" move could expose Twitter's board to "titanic" legal liability. The Epoch Times has reached out to Twitter for comment but no response was received by the company.

NASA discovers 'rapidly growing black hole' linking to younger galaxies
Astronomers have found evidence of a "rapidly growing black hole" in the early universe, according to NASA. This discovery has been labeled a "crucial missing link" as it could help us to understand the connection between the first supermassive black holes and young galaxies. NASA explained: "Astronomers have identified a rapidly growing black hole in the early universe that is considered a crucial "missing link" between young star-forming galaxies and the first supermassive black holes, using data from the Hubble Space Telescope to make this discovery." The US space agency also released an artistic impression of a supermassive black hole as well as an image taken by the Hubble Space Telescope.

Institutionalizing military mediocrity: Pentagon rolls out its 'equity' plan
The Department of Defense issued an equity report, aiming to equalize outcomes for employees and partners across racial, sexual and gender lines. The DOD released its equity report alongside all other departments of President Biden's administration this week. In the text, the DOD explained a series of procedural changes to better align with the White House's demands for "equity." "While the Department has historically focused on increasing equity within the DOD community, the collective actions described in this plan represent a shift in the Department's approach and focus to better ensure that we leverage our capabilities to create opportunities for all Americans," the Department of Defense wrote in its report.

Racist Twitter board declares they would rather go bankrupt rhan be owned by an African American
Twitter's board of directors has elected to block an attempt from an African American immigrant to purchase the company. French presidential candidate Le Pen says US should compensate France for loss of Russian gas
The US should compensate France for losses if the EU bans Russian energy carriers, French presidential candidate Marine Le Pen said in an interview with BFM TV. "The Americans, who will sell us liquefied gas and get a solid profit from it, could transfer money to France as compensation for anti-Russia sanctions," Le Pen said, noting that Washington is pressuring the EU to sanction Russian energy carriers. The bloc placed multiple sanctions on Russia after Moscow launched a military operation in neighboring Ukraine. The operation has been widely criticized by many Western nations, but perhaps none have been more outspoken than the US.

The Master Betrayed #1
In the conclusion of Iain McGilchrist's book The Master and His Emissary, the question is asked: "What would the left hemisphere's world look like if the left hemisphere of the brain became so far dominant that, at the phenomenological level, it managed more or less to suppress the right hemisphere's world altogether?" In this series of posts I'd like to break down his conclusion and discuss just how closely our world is conforming to the left hemisphere's perspective. We could expect, for a start, that there would be a loss of the broader picture, and a substitution of a more narrowly focussed, restricted, but detailed, view of the world, making it perhaps difficult to maintain a coherent overview. The broader picture would in any case be disregarded, because it would lack the appearance of clarity and certainty which the left hemisphere craves. In general, the 'bits' of anything, the parts into which it could be disassembled, would come to seem more important, more likely to lead...
