Desperation: Ukraine releasing convicts to form new nationalist battalions
Three new battalions from those serving time for grave crimes have been put together by Ukraine, Moscow says Ukrainian authorities have released convicts from prisons in the Kharkov Region, in the north east of the country, and used them to assemble several new military units, Russia's Defense Ministry claimed on Thursday. "In Kharkov, the formation of three new nationalist battalions is being completed, staffed by prisoners, who have served sentences for grave and extremely grave crimes at the Alekseevskaya and 43rd correctional colonies," Colonel General Mikhail Mizintsev, the head of the National Defense Management Center, said during a briefing.

DOJ secretly spied on Project Veritas journalists and their security detail's Apple and Google accounts
Apple and Google have admitted that between December 24, 2020, and March 15, 2021, the Department of Justice issued nine secret subpoenas and warrants to the tech companies for private information on Project Veritas journalists, said Veritas founder and CEO James O'Keefe in a video released on Wednesday. "The services we all use everyday have also been compromised. New documents revealed that professional and private accounts from Apple and Google were secretly obtained as well. There are thousands of these secret orders issued every year, ours is just a fraction of that. Every day American citizens are also being spied on... signed without so much as a hearing," said O'Keefe, showing a letter from the DOJ to Google signed by the US Attorney in the Southern District of New York.

British Army loses fight to claim diplomatic immunity from prosecution over Kenya bushfire
The British Army has lost its right to diplomatic immunity against lawsuits in Kenya in a landmark ruling over a massive bushfire allegedly caused by 'cocaine-taking' UK soldiers based in the African country. A huge wildfire at Lolldaiga Hills Ranch, a 49,000-acre sanctuary which houses the Nanyuki army base used by Britain for military drills, broke out in March last year and caused widespread devastation, putting more than 1,000 locals at risk of drought. In the ensuing chaos, Linus Murangiri, an employee of Lolldaiga conservancy, was crushed to death by a vehicle as he rushed to help put out the fire, leaving behind his wife and two sons.

Nazi hunter Efraim Zuroff scolds Canada over support for Ukraine
Azov fighters are neo-Nazis and Ottawa had to know this, Simon Wiesenthal Center's Efraim Zuroff has told Canadian media The director of the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Israel has condemned Canadian troops for training neo-Nazi fighters in Ukraine, saying it was Ottawa's responsibility to make sure such things did not happen. The Canadian military, however, denied any obligation to vet the training recipients. "The Canadian government didn't do its due diligence," Efraim Zuroff told the Ottawa Citizen on Wednesday. "It's the responsibility of the Canadian Defense Ministry to know exactly who they are training. "There is no question that there are neo-Nazis in different forms in Ukraine, whether they are in the Azov regiment or other organizations," he added.

Exclusive: Russian geoeconomics Tzar Sergei Glazyev introduces the new global financial system
The world's new monetary system, underpinned by a digital currency, will be backed by a basket of new foreign currencies and natural resources. And it will liberate the Global South from both western debt and IMF-induced austerity. Sergey Glazyev is a man living right in the eye of our current geopolitical and geoeconomic hurricane. One of the most influential economists in the world, a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and a former adviser to the Kremlin from 2012 to 2019, for the past three years he has helmed Moscow's uber strategic portfolio as Minister in Charge of Integration and Macroeconomics of the Eurasia Economic Union (EAEU). Glazyev's recent intellectual production has been nothing short of transformative, epitomized by his essay Sanctions and Sovereignty and an extensive discussion of the new, emerging geoeconomic paradigm in an interview to a Russian business magazine. In another of his recent essays, Glazyev comments on how "I grew up in Zaporozhye, near...

Not just Biden: Reports says Democrats fear Sen. Dianne Feinstein no longer mentally fit for Congress
Longtime Sen. Dianne Feinstein is showing clear signs of cognitive decline, according to a new report, leaving her colleagues in Congress scrambling for ways to persuade her to retire before her term expires in 2024. "It's bad, and it's getting worse," one Democratic senator told the San Francisco Chronicle, which also reported that a member of California's congressional delegation who has known Feinstein (D-Calif.) for 15 years recently had to reintroduce themselves to her repeatedly over a discussion lasting several hours. "I have worked with her for a long time and long enough to know what she was like just a few years ago: always in command, always in charge, on top of details, basically couldn't resist a conversation where she was driving some bill or some idea," the lawmaker said. "All of that is gone. She was an intellectual and political force not that long ago, and that's why my encounter with her was so jarring. Because there was just no trace of that."

The hypocrisy of empire: US has The Hague Invasion Act, but wants The Hague to prosecute Russia
— Washington wants Putin in the International Criminal Court, but its law allows "all means necessary" to prevent cases against USA Amid the fog of war in Ukraine and the total absence of any due process to assess the various violent scenes emerging from the conflict there - a process which normally takes years — the Biden administration is already looking for a way to get the International Criminal Court in The Hague to start from Washington's desired result and work backwards. "The Biden team strongly wants to see President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia and others in his military chain of command held to account," according to the New York Times. Except that the US isn't even a member of the court, so what authority, moral or otherwise, does it have? And neither is Russia, as of 2016, so any efforts to target Russia would amount to little more than symbolism. The lack of satisfaction that Washington would get, compared to the potential risks that it could itself incur, makes the...

RCMP billed taxpayers nearly $250K for buffets during Freedom Convoy crackdown
The RCMP billed taxpayers nearly a quarter-million dollars for buffets at the Fairmont Chateau Laurier while officers cracked down on Freedom Convoy protesters in Ottawa this February. An Access to Information and Privacy request obtained by True North reveals that the total costs for breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets in the luxury hotel's Canadian Room was $234,995.79. The RCMPs National Division of Financial Management told True North: "The enclosed invoice for the lodgement of RCMP officers, other police services and staff at the Fairmont Chateau Laurier totals $234,995.79 and consists of costs pertaining to meals provided in conference rooms used as shelter/down rooms from February 11th to 25th. At no time did RCMP members stay in accommodations at the Fairmont Chateau Laurier between January 20, 2022 and March 3, 2022." Since officers did not use accommodations at the Fairmont Chateau Laurier, the total bill for their stay in Ottawa is likely much higher.

Russia claims Ukrainian helicopters carried out strikes on its territory
Russia has claimed that two Ukrainian helicopters were responsible for an attack on the border village of Klimovo in Bryansk Region on Thursday, which left seven people injured. The incident had earlier been attributed to the Ukrainian military by the region's governor. An update on the attack was given by the national Investigative Committee, which said it was treating the incident as a criminal conspiracy. Its statement outlined that two Ukrainian military attack helicopters crossed into Russian airspace at around midday local time, flying at a low altitude. The aircraft fired heavy weapons at the village, delivering at least six strikes on residential buildings, the statement said. Seven people were injured and six houses were damaged in the attack, the investigators said. Earlier, health officials said a two-year-old boy and his mother, who is pregnant, were among the seven victims of the attack. Two people were said to be in a serious condition. It was one of two separate...

Pennsylvania's dramatic shift rightward is a warning sign for both parties about overreach
When Ken Miller changed his party registration from Democrat to Republican in September 2020, he said he wasn't doing it for Donald Trump. He had not voted for Trump or Hillary Clinton in 2016. Rather, he said, he was doing it for himself and his community after watching Democrats govern during the pandemic. "I am tired of what I am seeing," he said. Democrats appeared to ignore people like Miller, viewing his vote as replaceable by someone in their theoretical ascendant Democratic coalition of young people, women, intellectuals, and nonwhite voters. But the thinkers in Washington may have been too clever by half. Without working-class voters — white, black, and Hispanic — one cannot form a coalition to win elections. This applies not just to the White House but also to congressional and state-level races. In fact, if Democrats abandon workers for the professional class, they won't even be able to hold school boards and county row offices in many places. In September 2020, Cambria...

U.S. inflation rate leaps to 8.5%, CPI shows, as higher gas prices slam consumers
Core rate of inflation preferred by Fed matches smallest increase in six months The numbers: The rate of U.S. inflation leaped to 40-year high of 8.5% in March and showed little sign of quickly reversing, adding a new hurdle for the economy and complicating the Federal Reserve's effort to tame soaring prices. The consumer price index jumped 1.2% last month, driven by the higher cost of gasoline, food and housing, the government said Tuesday. It was the largest monthly gain since Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The rise in the cost of living has been hitting new highs for months. The rate of inflation in the past year moved up to 8.5% in March from 7.9%. The last time inflation topped 8% was in January 1982, when Ronald Reagan was president.

US intel can help Ukraine attack targets in Crimea
As the US has ramped up its involvement in the Ukrainian crisis by supplying heavier weapons to Kiev, it has also decided to provide intelligence reports that can help Ukrainian forces attack targets in Crimea, media outlets reported on Wednesday. Russia considers the peninsula part of its territory. "As the conflict evolves, we continue to adjust to ensure that operators have the flexibility to share detailed, timely intelligence with the Ukrainians," a US intelligence official told the Wall Street Journal. The newspaper said Washington is moving to "significantly expand" intelligence-sharing with Ukraine, but "will refrain from providing intelligence that would enable the Ukrainians to strike targets on Russian territory [sic]". The report, which was confirmed by the New York Times, specifically mentioned Crimea as covered by the new policy.

Ukraine: Deep stakes for Putin...and for China
An interview with The Critical Hour today afforded a chance to expand on "Mearsheimer: Russia Sees 'Existential Threat', Must Win" of April Putin is likely to press on with his armed campaign to demilitarize and denazify Ukraine; he seems already to have the wherewithal to achieve that aim. Better still from Putin's point of view, he possesses an important insurance policy that he has been paying premiums on for two decades — Big Brother President Xi Jin-ping of China is the insurance. The growing closeness of the Russia-China strategic relationship had become clear well before the invasion of Ukraine, when — to the surprise of many — Xi decided to give Putin a waiver on Westphalia, so to speak. Xi's strong support for Russia speaks volumes. Indeed, in a worst-case scenario sparked by the war in Ukraine, the U.S./NATO might well find themselves facing the possibility of a two-front war with both Russia and China. The most unsettling thing of all is that there is little sign that...

Germany weighs snubbing India as G-7 guest over Russia stance
Berlin was considering inviting India PM to summit before war Germany itself has come under criticism over Russia ties Germany is debating whether to invite Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the Group of Seven summit it's hosting in June, given India's reluctance to condemn Russia for invading Ukraine, according to people familiar with the matter. Germany is set to include Senegal, South Africa and Indonesia as guests at the meeting in Bavaria, but India remains under consideration, the people said, asking not to be identified discussing confidential matters. One of the people said India had been on a list drawn up before the war in Ukraine started, and a final decision hadn't been taken. India was among the more than 50 countries that abstained from a United Nations vote to suspend Russia from the UN Human Rights Council, and has not imposed sanctions on Moscow. It is a significant buyer of Russian weapons, which it says it needs to deter its neighbors China and Pakistan.

Finland and Sweden in NATO means change to nuclear posture - Moscow
Russia would have to deploy significant forces to its northwestern borders if Sweden and Finland join NATO, the country's ex-president, Dmitry Medvedev, warned on Thursday. He added that deploying nuclear arms to the region might well be a way of "restoring the balance" of security. The two states acceding to the US-led military bloc would only mean Russia will have more "officially registered adversaries," the former president wrote in a lengthy Telegram post commenting on the aspirations of Stockholm and Helsinki. The length of the land border between Russia and the military bloc will nearly double should the plans come to fruition, added Medvedev, who is currently deputy chairman of the country's Security Council. "This border's [security] will have to be strengthened," he continued. Possible enhancement options include "drastically increasing the number of land forces and air defenses" in the region, and deploying additional warships to the Gulf of Finland. "The non-nuclear...

Ukraine's decision to not receive German president 'irritating' - Chancellor Scholz
Germany is doing enough to support Ukraine, Chancellor Olaf Scholz told the country's RBB radio broadcaster on Wednesday. The head of government has also said he has no plans to travel to Kiev after the Ukrainian authorities turned down a visit by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. The chancellor said he had been to Kiev not long before the start of the military conflict, adding that he is in constant contact with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky by phone. "There is hardly any head of state or government who has such intensive contacts with me," he told RBB. Scholz called Kiev's decision not to receive the German president "irritating," adding that Steinmeier would have gladly visited the Ukrainian capital and "it would have been good" for Ukraine to welcome him.

Shanghai residents question human cost of China's Covid quarantines
Lu, 99, was a long-time resident at Shanghai's Donghai Elderly Care hospital, her loved ones secure that she was getting round-the-clock care at the city's largest such centre. That was before COVID-19 struck China's biggest city last month, the country's worst outbreak since the virus emerged in Wuhan in late 2019, infecting multiple patients, doctors and care workers at the 1,800-bed facility. Orderlies posted cries for help on social media, saying they were overwhelmed. Relatives told Reuters that there had been several deaths. Lu, whose relatives asked that she be identified only by her surname, had coronary heart disease and high blood pressure. She caught COVID and, though she had no symptoms, was being transferred to an isolation facility, her family was told on March 25. She died there seven days later, the cause of death listed as her underlying medical conditions, her granddaughter said.
