Canada to offer medically-assisted suicide to the mentally ill
With terminal cancer, "there is something inside the body that can be seen," says Dutch psychiatrist Dr. Sisco van Veen, tumours and tissues that can be measured or scanned or punctured, to identify the cells inside and help guide prognosis. You can't see depression on a scan. With the exception of dementia, where imaging can show structural brain changes, "in psychiatry, really all you have is the patient's story, and what you see with your eyes and what you hear and what the family tells you," van Veen says. Most mental disorders lack "prognostic predictability," which makes determining when psychiatric suffering has become "irremediable," essentially incurable, particularly challenging. Some say practically impossible. Which is why van Veen says difficult conversations are ahead as Canada moves closer to legalizing doctor-assisted deaths for people with mental illness whose psychological pain has become unbearable to them.

While many have observed the ebb and flow of Russian relations with the West - from periods of Westernization and openness, to anti-Western revivals of Russian traditionalism - Hahn's is the first systematic analysis of Russia's security culture and vigilance norm in the context of relations with the West. The West is an integral part of Russian identity, yet it has also been the source of invasion and political interference on and off for over 400 years. Chicago Thinker's Christopher Phillips smokes Brian Stelter on CNN's journalistic ethics during 'disinformation' conference
During the "Disinformation and the Erosion of Democracy" conference hosted by the University of Chicago's Institute of Politics (IOP), Chicago Thinker staff writer Christopher Phillips blindsided CNN's Brian Stelter with a question about the network's journalistic ethics and its history of spreading disinformation. Phillip's takedown comes one day after the Atlantic's Anne Applebaum infamously dismissed the Hunter Biden laptop scandal as "totally irrelevant" in response to a question posed by his Thinker colleague, Daniel Schmidt. The conference event, "How Media Platforms Shape Consumer Realities," was moderated by the New York Times's Jim Rutenberg and featured Stelter, Stephen Hayes of the Dispatch, and Lauren Williams of Capital B. Phillips opened by highlighting several of CNN's most notable fabrications: [...] You've all spoken extensively about Fox News being a purveyor of disinformation, but CNN is right up there with them. Joe Rogan reveals that woke 'anti-racist' ideology was pushed on his 9-year-old child in California school
In Tuesday's episode of the Joe Rogan Experience, the show's host and namesake revealed the "anti-racist" ideology that his child's school in California pushed following the death of George Floyd in May of 2020. "When the whole George Floyd thing happened, one of the school's that my kids were going to back in California released this email, saying that it's not enough to not be racist, you now must be anti-racist. And my kid's nine at the time. What does that, what does that mean?" Rogan asked. "These kids are not even remotely racist. Like, they have all sorts of different kinds of friends. They — I've never heard them discuss it once. It's just 'I like this person and she's nice to me and we like to play together and we both like the same things' and let's — so to tell a nine year old that you have to be anti-racist, well, then they go looking for racism, they're gonna go looking to confront it," he added.

FLASHBACK: Have 20 Years of NATO Expansion Made Anyone Safer?
Since 1997, the world's perhaps most powerful corporation and lobbyist has created more insecurity than security. Nation Contributing Editor Stephen F. Cohen and John Batchelor continue their weekly discussions of the new US-Russian Cold War. (Previous installments, now in their fourth year, are at TheNation.com.) Cohen notes that 20 years ago, in 1997, President Bill Clinton made the decision to expand NATO eastward. That same year, in order to placate post-Soviet Russia, then weak and heralded in Washington as America's "strategic friend and partner," the Russian-NATO Founding Act was adopted. It promised that expansion would entail no "permanent stationing of substantial combat forces." Cohen takes the occasion of this anniversary year to ask whether NATO's eastward expansion has created more insecurity than provide the security it promised. He divides the question into several subjects, which he and Batchelor discuss.

Mass shooting suspect served less time with California law
A suspect arrested in connection with last weekend's mass shooting outside bars near the California state Capitol served less than half his 10-year sentence because of voter-approved changes to state law that lessened the punishment for his felony convictions and provided a chance for earlier release. Smiley Allen Martin was freed in February after serving time for punching a girlfriend, dragging her from her home by her hair and whipping her with a belt, according to court and prison records. Those count as nonviolent offenses under California law, which considers only about two dozen crimes to be violent felonies — things like murder, rape, arson and kidnapping. Martin, 27, was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of possession of a firearm by a prohibited person and possession of a machine gun. He is among the 12 people wounded during Sunday's shooting, which killed six others. Police say the violence was a shootout between rival gangs in which at least five people fired weapons,...

Last of the giant camels and archaic humans lived together in Mongolia until desertification 27,000 years ago
A species of giant two-humped camel, Camelus knoblochi, is known to have lived for approximately a quarter of a million years in Central Asia. A new study in Frontiers in Earth Science shows that C. knoblochi's last refuge was in Mongolia until approximately 27,000 years ago. In Mongolia, the last of the species coexisted with anatomically modern humans and maybe the extinct Neanderthals or Denisovans. While the main cause of C. knoblochi's extinction seems to have been climate change, hunting by archaic humans may also have played a role. "Here we show that the extinct camel, Camelus knoblochi, persisted in Mongolia until climatic and environmental changes nudged it into extinction about 27,000 years ago," said Dr. John W Olsen, Regents' professor emeritus at the School of Anthropology of the University of Arizona, Tucson, US.

New Jersey model curriculum: 'Gender identity' lessons for 1st and 2nd graders
A model New Jersey state curriculum provided to parents in the Westfield school district and released by State Sen. Holly Schepisi (R-39) suggests that students should begin learning about gender identity as early as the first or second grade. Transgender activists believe that gender identity is different from biological sex, and that individuals may switch genders. While there is growing tolerance for that idea among adults, including in Supreme Court decisions, many Americans believe it should not be introduced to young children, for whom discussions of sex, gender, and sexuality are inappropriate.

France prepares for gas rationing
France is surveying its largest consumers of natural gas to assess which of them would have to suspend normal operations if deliveries of the fuel from Russia are cut. The plan was outlined in a decree published on Friday by the government gazette JORF. The document says the French gas network operator GRTgaz will collect data from the nation's largest consumers so that the government could decide which of them could be put on pause with the least economic damage. Only entities with annual consumption of at least 5 gigawatt hours are being considered for the chopping block. The survey, which gas consumers must participate in under the threat of being fined, is meant for a scenario in which the supply of Russian gas to France is disrupted. If shortages over the summer leave the country unprepared for the cold season, rationing may be necessary next winter.

Alberta's chief medical officer Hinshaw tells court rights were violated for the greater good, during pandemic
Alberta's chief medical officer of health acknowledged Tuesday that the measures taken to combat the COVID-19 pandemic affected individual rights. But Dr. Deena Hinshaw told a hearing challenging her public health orders that the measures were a "last resort" necessary to protect individuals from the coronavirus and maintain the viability of the health-care system. Under cross-examination by lawyer Leighton Grey, one of two counsel representing parties challenging the constitutionality of Hinshaw's orders, the doctor said such measures were needed when voluntary compliance didn't prevent the spread of the disease.

Drought drove Vikings out of Greenland, new study suggests
One of the great mysteries of late medieval history is why did the Norse, who had established successful settlements in southern Greenland in 985, abandon them in the early 15th century? The consensus view has long been that colder temperatures, associated with the Little Ice Age, helped make the colonies unsustainable. However, new research, led by the University of Massachusetts Amherst and published recently in Science Advances, upends that old theory. It wasn't dropping temperatures that helped drive the Norse from Greenland, but drought.

An unknown fighter jet sped under an Air Serbia Airbus A330 as the aircraft was crossing Russian-Latvian border on a flight between Moscow (SVO) and Belgrade (BEG), Serbian president Aleksandar Vucic said in an interview on national television. According to Vucic, the fighter jet flew under Air Serbia's aircraft in Russian airspace on April 6, 2022. Vucic read out what he said was a report from a pilot on the flight: "Not far from the Russian-Latvian border, Russian Air Traffic Control sent us traffic information to warn us about an aircraft nearby. Two minutes later they asked us to visually identify the aircraft." Vucic said. "The plane in question. It was a military fighter jet. It resembled the "Phantom 15" or the Eurofighter the most, gray in color."

Heavy snowfall led to power outages and road closures in northern Bavaria on Saturday morning, while other high-lying regions of the south were also affected. Some 7,500 residents of the north Bavarian district of Mittelberg were dealing with power outages on Saturday morning. Local authorities in the district, which is situated between Frankfurt and Wüprzburg, said they hoped to have the electricity network back up and running by the afternoon. Several roads also had to be closed after trees fell across the asphalt.

Russia suspended from UN Human Rights Council for 'systematic abuses'
The UN General Assembly has voted to suspend Russia from the Human Rights Council over reports of "gross and systematic violations and abuses of human rights" by invading Russian troops in Ukraine. The resolution received 93 votes in favor, 24 against, and 58 abstentions. The U.S.-initiated resolution adopted by the 193-member General Assembly expressed "grave concern at the ongoing human rights and humanitarian crisis in Ukraine." Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba expressed his gratitude to the UN members who voted in favor of suspending Russia from the Geneva-based 47-member council, which is the UN's leading human rights organization. The rebuke marked only the second time a country has been dismissed from the council, which was founded in 2006. Libya's suspension in 2011 was the first. The Russian Foreign Ministry rejected the suspension, calling the move "illegal and politically motivated, aimed at ostentatiously punishing a sovereign UN member state that pursues an...

BEST OF THE WEB: Tochka-U missile kills dozens waiting to evacuate from Kramatorsk rail station - West immediately blames Russia - UPDATE: Serial number suggests Ukraine responsible
Thirty-nine people have been killed and more than 100 wounded in a Russian missile strike on a railway station in eastern Ukraine in what President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said was a deliberate attack on civilians. Comment: The propaganda is immediate and unequivocal. It is also mere assertion. Things aren't so cut-and-dried. Ukraine's state railway company said two Russian rockets struck the station on April 8 in Kramatorsk, which was being used to evacuate civilians from areas that are expected to come under heavy attack as Moscow redirects its war efforts to focus on eastern areas where the separatists it has backed since 2014 have been fighting Ukrainian troops. "Lacking the strength and courage to stand up to us on the battlefield, they are cynically destroying the civilian population," Zelenskiy said in a statement. "This is an evil that has no limits. And if it is not punished, it will never stop." Comment: Zelensky is a war criminal. The evil of the Ukrainian regime seemingly...

The Total War to Cancel Russia
By now it's abundantly clear that the neo-Orwellian "Two Minute Hate" Russophobic campaign launched by the Empire of Lies after the start of Operation Z is actually "24/7 Hate". Vast swathes of NATOstan have been corralled into behaving like a Russophobic lynch mob. No dissent is tolerated. The full psyops has de facto upgraded the Empire of Lies to the status of Empire of Hate in a Total War - hybrid and otherwise - to cancel Russia. Hate, after all, packs way more punch than mere lies, which are now veering into abject ridiculousness, as in U.S. "intelligence" resorting to - what else - lies to fight the info war against Russia. If the propaganda overdrive has been lethally effective amidst the zombified Western masses - call it a "win" in the P.R. war - in the front where it really matters, inside Russia, it's a major fail. Public opinion support for both Operation Z and President Putin is unprecedented. After videos of torture of Russian POWs that caused widespread revulsion,...
