Elon Musk contacted The Babylon Bee before making significant Twitter acquisition
Elon Musk, the world's richest man, contacted the satirical website The Babylon Bee, before making a significant acquisition of Twitter. Musk, who has appeared on The Babylon Bee's podcast alongside its chief executive and writers, is a fan of the publication and has shared links to the page numerous times. The Babylon Bee, which is currently suspended from Twitter over an article that jokingly referred to US Health and Human Services Assistant Secretary Rachel Levine as "Man of the Year," hosted Musk at the end of 2021. Babylon Bee CEO Seth Dillon claims that Musk consulted with The Babylon Bee before purchasing a 9.2% stake in Twitter. "Musk reached out to us before he polled his followers about Twitter's commitment to free speech," Dillon said on Twitter. "He wanted to confirm that we had, in fact, been suspended. He even mused on that call that he might need to buy Twitter. Now he's the largest shareholder and has a seat on the board."

Footage shows Ukrainian troops brutalizing captives
Videos show officers kicking detainees in the head and mocking one scared man's weak bladder. Footage published on Ukrainian social media on Tuesday appeared to show people in uniform beating up and harassing detainees. The mayor of the country's fourth largest city, Dnepr, close to where the incidents happened, justified the mistreatment on social media, branding the arrestees as "crime bosses" and claiming they previously attacked members of the region's militia. The graphic footage includes two separate videos, showing armed people in military fatigues brutally arresting men in civilian clothes. The troops are wearing the same kind of blue armbands that Ukrainian soldiers often use to identify their allegiance.

EU reveals why it won't ban Russian gas
Foreign policy chief says banning Russian gas imports is not possible due to Hungary's veto. EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell has announced that introducing a total ban on Russian gas imports has been ruled out because the bloc would not be able to pass a unanimous vote due to Hungary's position. Soviet-era's last US envoy to Moscow comments on war atrocities accusations against Russia
Moral outrage over images of apparent war atrocities in Bucha, Ukraine is understandable, but the calls to turn Russia into a pariah state are ill-advised, a former US ambassador to the Soviet Union warned on Monday, during an appearance on CNN. Jack Matlock held various positions during the height of the Cold War and was Washington's representative to the USSR in the final years of the communist powerhouse. The veteran diplomat warned CNN audiences that the drive to further antagonize Russia, which prevails in the West, is ill-advised, especially since it's driven by emotions rather than reason. "I share many of these emotions, but to the idea that we can make a major nuclear weapon state a pariah, that by our actions we actually are destroying those elements in that society that could bring a positive change in the future. I think that is not wise," he said.

Russia's human rights ombudsman has pledged to investigate information that some Crimean officers, held captive in Ukraine, have been allegedly designated by the Kiev authorities as "unexchangeable" and could even be subject to execution. Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, Tatiana Moskalkova confirmed that Russia and Ukraine had earlier conducted an exchange of prisoners in the "86 to 86 format." In Tuesday's episode of the Joe Rogan Experience, the show's host and namesake revealed the "anti-racist" ideology that his child's school in California pushed following the death of George Floyd in May of 2020. "When the whole George Floyd thing happened, one of the school's that my kids were going to back in California released this email, saying that it's not enough to not be racist, you now must be anti-racist. And my kid's nine at the time. What does that, what does that mean?" Rogan asked. "These kids are not even remotely racist. Like, they have all sorts of different kinds of friends. They — I've never heard them discuss it once. It's just 'I like this person and she's nice to me and we like to play together and we both like the same things' and let's — so to tell a nine year old that you have to be anti-racist, well, then they go looking for racism, they're gonna go looking to confront it," he added.

EU to ban coal, Russian ships from EU ports, but not agricultural products or oil, in yet another round of selective sanctions
The European Commission proposed new sanctions against Russia, including a ban on buying Russian coal and on Russian ships entering EU ports, while it is also working on banning oil imports too. After "gruesome pictures" from Bucha shocked the planet, the head of the European Union's executive, Ursula von der Leyen, responded that: These atrocities cannot and will not be left unanswered. The four packages of sanctions have hit hard and limited the Kremlin's political and economic options. In view of events we need to increase our pressure further Comment: The reasoning of the pathological. More specifically, EU's new proposal suggests a ban on imports of coal from Russia worth 4 billion euros per year, as well as a full transaction ban on four key Russian banks, including the country's second-largest, VTB.

Magnetic field of Milky Way's 'bone' fully mapped for the first time
For the first time, scientists have completely mapped one of the 'bones' of the Milky Way galaxy. That bone is a long, dense filament of cold gas in the densest part of one of the galaxy's spiral arms. It measures around 195 light-years in length; the map, acquired using the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) plane, gives us the first complete picture of the magnetic fields therein. The result defies expectations. Rather than aligned along the length of the bone, the magnetic fields are more higgledy-piggledy, and the average magnetic field is neither parallel nor perpendicular to the bone. This, the researchers said, can help us to better understand not just the structures of spiral galaxies, but their star formation. Comment: It's not the first time that results like these 'defy expectations' and this seems to be because mainstream science is missing a rather significant piece of the puzzle: Why the sun's atmosphere is hundreds of times hotter than its...

Seabirds are dying by the hundreds in western Newfoundland, Canada
Residents speculating about cause of the die-off, with similar reports in Labrador Dead seabirds are showing up by the hundreds on the ice and on shore near the town of Hampden in western Newfoundland, leaving residents and biologists stumped and searching for the reason why. Longtime resident and murre hunter Gary Gale told CBC News on Friday he has never seen an event of this magnitude before. He said birds began to fly into the bay about a week ago — and within a few days they began to die. "[It's] unbelievable," Gale said. "Several years ago it was common to see seabirds that would pick up oil if you had an oil spill and die from picking up the oil, but I did make a check on some of the birds close to shore and I didn't see any oil in the feathers." Gale said residents believe the birds — which so far seem to be entirely murres — are dying of starvation.

The Coming Global Financial Revolution: Russia Is Following the American Playbook
No country has successfully challenged the U.S. dollar's global hegemony — until now. How did this happen and what will it mean? Foreign critics have long chafed at the "exorbitant privilege" of the U.S. dollar as global reserve currency. The U.S. can issue this currency backed by nothing but the "full faith and credit of the United States." Foreign governments, needing dollars, not only accept them in trade but buy U.S. securities with them, effectively funding the U.S. government and its foreign wars. But no government has been powerful enough to break that arrangement - until now. How did that happen and what will it mean for the U.S. and global economies? The Rise and Fall of the PetroDollar First, some history: The U.S. dollar was adopted as the global reserve currency at the Bretton Woods Conference in 1944, when the dollar was still backed by gold on global markets. Disturbing study finds microplastics in human bloodstream
There's a good chance that tiny pieces of plastic are not only in your body but floating in your bloodstream. The news came from researchers in The Netherlands, who analyzed blood samples from 22 healthy volunteers. It's the first time microplastics have been detected in human blood, and according to study author professor Dick Vethaak, an ecotoxicologist at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in The Netherlands, "It is certainly reasonable to be concerned."1 The fact is, plastic is a ubiquitous part of the modern-day world, integrally intertwined with our daily lives, from plastic food packaging and bottles to microbeads found in personal care products. It's estimated that 11 million metric tons of plastic waste enter the world's oceans annually — an amount that could nearly triple by 2040.2
