Minister claims UK may build seven nuclear plants by 2050
Britain could build up to seven new nuclear power plants by 2050, as well as boost offshore wind to diversify energy sources, a senior minister said Sunday. "If we fast forward to 2050, there is a world where we have six or seven (nuclear) sites in the UK," Business and Energy Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng told The Sunday Telegraph. "That isn't going to happen in the next two years. But it's definitely something that we can aspire to." Comment: If current policy is anything to by, it's likely it will remain just that, an aspiration. Bear in mind that, just a few months ago, as part of the suicidal green agenda, Germany shut three of its six nuclear plants.

Psychotic Polish deputy-PM offers US to install nukes in his country, wants Washington to send tens of thousands more troops
Jaroslaw Kaczynski, Poland's Deputy Prime Minister, has spoken in favor of US nuclear weapons being deployed in eastern Europe, citing Russia's military offensive against Ukraine. In an interview with Germany's Die Welt news outlet published on Sunday, Kaczynski said that "fundamentally, it makes sense to expand nuclear sharing to the eastern flank," apparently referring to a NATO concept by which "the benefits, responsibilities and risks of nuclear deterrence are shared across the Alliance." The Polish official noted, however, that such an initiative should come from the US. On top of that, Kaczynski called on the military bloc to set up a new command center in Poland, akin to the one in the Dutch town of Brunssum, "from where joint NATO deployments will be planned and conducted." According to the deputy, that would send a clear signal to Russia that the military alliance is now present in Eastern Europe at command level as well. Comment: Meanwhile Italy says that it will...

States look for solutions as US fentanyl deaths keep rising
As the addiction and overdose crisis that has gripped the U.S. for two decades turns even deadlier, state governments are scrambling for ways to stem the destruction wrought by fentanyl and other synthetic opioids. In statehouses across the country, lawmakers have been considering and adopting laws on two fronts: reducing the risk to users and increasing the penalties for dealing fentanyl or mixing it with other drugs. Meanwhile, Republican state attorneys general are calling for more federal action, while some GOP governors are deploying National Guard units with a mission that includes stopping the flow of fentanyl from Mexico. "It's a fine line to help people and try to get people clean, and at the same time incarcerate and get the drug dealers off the streets," said Nathan Manning, a Republican state senator in Ohio who is sponsoring legislation to make it clear that materials used to test drugs for fentanyl are legal.

New Scientist has actually published a sympathetic account of Panpsychism
A serious, long form article shows that physicalism ("the mind is just what the brain does") is failing Panpsychism, the view that all nature participates in consciousness, has been growing under the radar for some time in science. But it is now coming into plainer view. New Scientist is one of the last places one might have expected to find a serious, long-form account of panpsychism — one that, in the context, amounts to a defense. Yet that's just what science writer and filmmaker Thomas Lewton has been permitted by the editors to do. He tells us about his own journey at his site: "Studying physics, I thought telescopes and particle colliders would offer firm answers, but instead they raised more questions." And at New Scientist, he tells us why: It can seem as if there is an insurmountable gap between our subjective experience of the world and our attempts to objectively describe it. And yet our brains are made of matter - so, you might think, the states of mind they generate...

School named after the first Prime Minister of Canada changed to random Indigenous person no one has ever heard of
It didn't take long for the Peel District School Board to erase Sir John A. Macdonald and 200 years of Canadian history. Until Wednesday, a Brampton school had been named after Canada's first Prime Minister for decades. Not anymore. Just hours after the board renamed the school, the Sir John A. Macdonald sign was taken down and replaced.

Unusually large waves flood beach parks along New South Wales coast
The New South Wales coastline has copped a lashing this weekend with monstrous waves swallowing beaches and wiping out footpaths. Wild footage taken at Avoca Beach, north of Sydney, on Saturday demonstrated their power as the huge tide thrashed the sand, wiping out two dog walkers. Two people can be seen walking on the beach before being knocked down and swept up in the swell.

Poland wants more US troops near Russia
Warsaw would like to see Pentagon boost its military presence in Europe by 50%, ruling party leader says A top Polish leader has called for the US to dramatically expand its troop presence in Europe, to deploy more forces along Russia's borders and possibly to station nuclear weapons in Poland. "Poland would be pleased if the Americans increased their presence in Europe from the current 100,000 soldiers up to 150,000 in the future due to Russia's increasing aggressiveness," Deputy Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski said, in an interview published on Sunday by German newspaper Welt am Sonntag. Kaczynski, who also heads Poland's ruling political party, said 75,000 of Washington's troops in Europe should be permanently stationed on NATO's eastern flank, along borders with Russia. Those deployments would nearly match the approximately 80,000 US troops that the US had stationed in all of Europe before Moscow launched a military offensive against Ukraine in February.

NATO offers fast track membership to neutral Finland and Sweden, days after Russia asks Europe for security guarantee
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said Finland and Sweden would be quickly brought into the alliance should they seek membership, as Russia's invasion of Ukraine stokes security concerns on the bloc's eastern flank. "Of course, it's for them to decide but, if they apply, I expect that they will be very much welcomed by all 30 allies and that we will find ways to do that in a relatively quick way to take them into the alliance if they so want," Stoltenberg said on Sunday in an interview with CNN. Comment: It's unlikely that all 30 NATO members want to provoke Russia in such a manner. Stoltenberg made his comments after meeting last week with Finnish President Sauli Niinistö, noting that NATO's main message was that it's for Finland to decide whether to join the alliance. He said the same is true of Sweden.

Ukrainian journalist finds charred remains where alleged war crime was filmed
Amid overwhelming evidence that Russian forces have committed war crimes during an unprovoked war of aggression in Ukraine, Ukrainian officials were confronted this week with video that appeared to show Ukrainian soldiers shooting captive Russian soldiers in the legs. Although Ukraine's senior military leader and its domestic intelligence agency both insisted that the video posted on social networks on Sunday was "a fake" produced by Russia, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy promised that the government would investigate and punish those responsible if the incident did take place. On Monday, a well-known Ukrainian journalist, Yuri Butusov, published graphic video showing the charred remains of three men he identified as Russian soldiers, as Ukrainian forces recaptured the town of Malaya Rohan, outside Kharkiv, over the weekend. Although Butusov made no mention of the video of the alleged war crime, a visual analysis of his footage shows that it was clearly...

Tucker Carlson reports spying allegations in Congress
Fox News host Tucker Carlson reported that two members of Congress are being "spied on" by the U.S. intelligence apparatus. The top-rated cable news personality, who accused the National Security Agency of spying on him last year, made the comment during an interview Friday with Utah GOP Rep. Chris Stewart. The congressman has introduced legislation to better protect U.S. citizens from domestic surveillance activities. Carlson said he's "spoken directly to two sitting members of Congress" tasked with overseeing the intelligence community, and he heard they "were being spied on by the intel agencies, and they didn't do anything about it."

BEST OF THE WEB: Experts: Bucha-Like 'False Flag' Incidents to Continue as West 'Frustrated' Over Propaganda Failures
Over the past 24 hours, the Western media have been fueling allegations that Russia committed mass killings of civilians in the Ukrainian city of Bucha as footage has shown city streets strewn with bodies. The Russian Defence Ministry dismissed the accusations, underscoring that the footage is nothing short of yet another provocation. With Kiev quickly accusing Russia of "genocide" and "massacre" in Bucha, Western media seems eager to automatically criminalise Moscow without a full investigation - and it looks like the media is a tool for the West to make up for frustrations caused by the failures of its own propaganda, experts have stated. Doubts were cast at allegations that Russia is behind the purported "war crimes" in Bucha shortly after a video posted by one of the Kiev territorial defence battalion leaders resurfaced online. In the video, titled "BOATSMAN BOYS' work in Bucha", fighters are heard asking whether they can shoot people without blue armbands (an identifier of the...

US to pay off Moldova with $80 million for 'influx of refugees' from its proxy war in Ukraine
The United States will give Moldova $50 million to help it cope with the impacts of Russia's war against Ukraine, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield said during a visit to the former Soviet republic on Sunday. She said the funding would support programs, training and equipment for border management, efforts to counter human trafficking, help to improve accountability and transparency in the justice sector, and combat corruption and cybercrime. Comment: The US won't be tracking how that money is spent, and it's likely that vast majority of it will be lost to corruption. Moreover, there'd be no conflict had the US and NATO, as noted by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, "heeded the warnings from amongst its own leaders and officials over the years that its eastward expansion would lead to greater, not less, instability in the region." Nearly 400,000 refugees have already fled Ukraine through Moldova, with about a quarter remaining in the country,...

Are people with dark personality traits more likely to succeed?
'Dark' personalities come in various shades, but at the core of all of them is a tendency to callously use others for personal gain. What is it that these types of people are really gaining, though? Might a benevolent approach to life and others be even more advantageous? For 15 years, research into dark personality traits (including narcissism, psychopathy and Machiavellianism) has been rapidly expanding. We now know that these traits are far more evident, on average, in men than women. We know that approximately 1-2 per cent of individuals in the general population display extremely dark personality features - enough to meet the clinical threshold for a personality disorder - and about 10-20 per cent of individuals have moderately elevated levels. We know that even people with moderate levels of dark traits can wreak havoc: they are more likely to lie and cheat, show racist attitudes, and be violent towards others. As researchers, we have studied these traits ourselves. But in a...

US corporate profits hit a new record high in 2021
Corporate profits hit another record in 2021, though the breakneck pace of growth slowed sharply during the fourth quarter. Why it matters: This shows that companies have been able to overcome the inflationary wave flowing through the U.S. economy — and even profit from it. State of play: Companies complained loudly about rising costs for raw materials and labor for most of 2021, but data released yesterday by the Commerce Department show that they passed those costs along — and then some. For the full year 2021, pre-tax profits rose 25% to roughly $2.81 trillion, handily outpacing the 7% rise in consumer prices over the same stretch.

NYC's top doc apologizes to black and Hispanic 'birthing people' for calling them 'mothers'
Dr. Michelle Morse, the chief medical officer at New York City's Department of Health, has received sharp criticism for describing pregnant women differently along lines of race, choosing to call pregnant white women "birthing people" while referencing pregnant women of color as "mothers" in a late March tweet. Since the city's top doctor's March 23 tweet, a DOH spokesman called Morse's post an "oversight" and said "we apologize for inadvertently gendering Black and Puerto Rican birthing people," according to the New York Post. Morse had been sharing a number of tweets in which she advocated for increased allocation of goods and services to women of color. A disproportionate number of them, Morse argued, had died either during or shortly after childbirth.
