The 'elite'? UK Tory MP who 'wants to be transgender', threatened to kill own son in 2020, had two charges of assault in 2015, co-owned sugar daddy website
Britain's first trans MP Tory Jamie Wallis has thanked the Prime Minister and his fellow MPs for their support - hours after he dramatically came out on Twitter and revealed his rape and blackmail ordeal. At PMQs today, Boris Johnson praised the bravery of a South Wales Tory who became the UK's first openly transgender MP and also revealed he was the victim of rape and a £50,000 blackmail plot. Wallis made the revelation in a tweet at 3am after he attended a dinner for Tory MPs at which the Prime Minister poked fun at the culture war over gender identity. He added in a tweet today, that he would continue using 'he' pronouns and 'remain the same person I was yesterday'. The Prime Minister threw a dinner for his MPs at the Park Plaza near Westminster Bridge last night and opened his speech with a gag about the issue after Labour's leader refused to answer a question about whether a woman can have a penis.

'Why were we there?': Many Americans hated the Vietnam War but then forgot about it
If America's soul becomes totally poisoned, part of the autopsy must read 'Vietnam.' - Martin Luther King Jr., 1967 In contrast to modern conflicts, the Vietnam War attracted the wrath of the political left, which campaigned vehemently against it. The outrage even led to attacks on veterans. On Vietnam War Veterans Day, almost half a century after the last US troops left the country, RT tries to understand - what was it about this particular conflict that struck a nerve? Aside from it being the hottest day of his life, Avery 'Boots' Jackson remembers March 15, 1969 as the day he narrowly escaped death in the jungles of Vietnam. Seated inside a US Army transport helicopter with 11 other soldiers, the 19-year-old recruit watched in silence as the lush forest canopy sped past below him, almost close enough to touch, as the machine raced towards the designated drop zone in southern Vietnam just miles from the Cambodian border.

BEST OF THE WEB: Another breakaway republic wants to unite with Russia
South Ossetia, a partially recognized republic in the Caucasus region, will soon be taking legal steps in an attempt to join the Russian Federation, its president, Anatoly Bibilov, has announced. Most of the world officially regards the territory as part of Georgia, although Tbilisi hasn't held control since the Soviet collapse in 1991. "I believe that unification with Russia is our strategic goal. Our path, the aspirations of our people. And we will move along this path. We will take appropriate legal steps in the near future. The Republic of South Ossetia will be part of its historical homeland - Russia," Bibilov said. Located in the South Caucasus, South Ossetia fought a brutal war with Georgia, in the early 1990s, and was recognized by Russia as an independent republic following the 2008 military conflict between Russia and Georgia, prompted by Tbilisi's forces shelling the region, where Russian peacekeepers were stationed.

Ukraine accuses Red Cross of 'working for enemy'
Ukraine's deputy prime minister has accused the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) of "working for the enemy" after it allegedly assisted in the evacuation of residents from the city of Mariupol to Russia. She implied that the international aid organization was more interested in Russian money than in supporting the Ukrainian cause. The barrage of accusations came from Iryna Vereshchuk, who is Ukraine's highest-ranking parliamentarian with responsibility for humanitarian affairs. She reiterated Kiev's claims that Moscow was forcefully abducting Ukrainians from Mariupol, the port city that has seen some of the worst fighting since the month-long Russian attack on Ukraine began. The ICRC had helped with those evacuations, she has alleged. "Ukraine never agreed to a humanitarian corridor from Mariupol to Russia. That's obvious. They are occupiers. They are enemies. Not peacemakers. The Red Cross had no right to help evacuate people there," she said in an interview with...

West wants Ukraine to be 'second Afghanistan' - Moscow
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has accused the West of attempting to turn Ukraine into "a second Afghanistan." He was speaking during a meeting with his Pakistani counterpart, Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi, in China on Wednesday. The remarks came ahead of a summit on the situation in the Central Asian country, which will take place on Thursday in Tunxi city, and will be attended, by China and Russia, as well as the US, and others. "Those who tried to make Afghanistan the center of world politics are now trying to replace Afghanistan with Ukraine," Lavrov said. Since 1978, Afghanistan has been a scene of multiple wars with numerous international players involved. American and other Western troops left Kabul last year after a two decade occupation, with the country falling to the Taliban soon after.

NATO in Central Asia 'unacceptable' - Russia
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Thursday that any NATO military presence in Central Asia would undermine the security of the Russian-led CSTO alliance, in the region, and would not be tolerated by Moscow. The minister made his comment at an Afghanistan-themed summit in Tunxi, China. "We believe it's unacceptable to have any US and NATO military infrastructure, or their Afghan helpers, on the territory of neighboring states, especially in Central Asia," Lavrov said, adding that "such designs go against the security interests of our countries." He added that the existence of Western military sites would contradict the interests of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), which has six members, all former Soviet states.

Russian military explains actions near Ukrainian capital
Russian troops near the Ukrainian cities of Kiev and Chernigov are regrouping as the goal of the first stage of their military operation has been completed, the Defense Ministry claimed on Wednesday. During a regular press briefing, its spokesperson, Major General Igor Konashenkov, said the "planned regrouping of troops is taking place [in the] Kiev and Chernigov areas." He explained that the initial stage of Moscow's military operation involved forcing Ukraine's military "to concentrate its forces, means, resources and military equipment to hold large settlements in these areas, including Kiev," to tie them up, while avoiding storming the cities, and to defeat them in such a way that would prevent them from using these forces "in the main direction of operations of our Armed Forces - in the Donbass." The Donbass refers to the territory of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics, recognised as independent states by Moscow, last month. Simultaneously, according to the ministry...

US Army to reach its smallest size since 1940 due to recruiting difficulties
The Army this week admitted it was having problems recruiting and announced an unprecedented reduction in its numbers that would shrink the active duty Army to its smallest size since World War II. "We're facing, obviously, some challenging conditions in terms of our ability to recruit and attract talent," Under Secretary of the Army Gabe Camarillo said at a press conference on Monday. Camarillo blamed a "very tight labor market" for the Army's recruiting woes. "What we're just seeing is given the particular conditions of a very tight labor market, our ability to meet all of our projected recruiting goals were a little bit challenged in FY '22 and FY '23," he said. Camarillo said the Army's end strength, or total number of forces, would go from 485,000 soldiers currently to 476,000 in fiscal year 2022, which ends in September, and further down to 473,000 in fiscal year 2023.

Putin signs decree creating ruble payment system for Russian gas to bolster currency
President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree forcing some purchasers of Russian gas to set up a special account to pay for their supplies as the country tries to cope with the impact of Western sanctions imposed because of Moscow's unprovoked invasion of Ukraine last month. Comment: "Unprovoked." RFE/RL will never give up their special breed of slimy journalism. Putin said after signing the decree that, from April 1, buyers of Russian gas from what Russia deems "unfriendly" countries would have to set up special "K-accounts" to transfer their payments. Once the payment is received, the funds will be exchanged into rubles. The entire payment facility will be set up and run through Russia's Gazprombank, a subsidiary of state energy giant Gazprom. Putin also said any country refusing to use the payment mechanism will be in violation of their contracts and face "corresponding repercussions." European leaders have rejected paying for deliveries in rubles, saying such a move would...
