Invasion of the Fact-Checkers
In the past five years, a cadre of fact-checkers has marched through the institutions of journalism and installed itself in the U.S. media as a privatized, quasi-governmental regulatory agency. What's wrong with facts, you say? Fueled by a panic over misinformation, the fact-checking industry is shifting the media's primary obligation away from pursuing the truth and toward upholding vague notions of public safety, which it gets to define. In the course of this transformation, journalists are being turned into rent-a-cops whose job is to enforce an official consensus that is treated as a civic good by those who benefit from — and pay for — its protection. At Meta — the parent company of Facebook and Instagram — content flagged as false or misleading gets downgraded in the platform's algorithms so fewer people will see it. Google and Twitter have similar rules to bury posts. In reality, America's new public-private "Ministry of Truth" mainly serves the interests of the tech...

Justin Trudeau has become a punchline on the world stage — for good reason
It is a brazen thing to go to other countries like some John the Baptist for the democracies, shortly after having trampled all over the rights of those involved in a largely peaceful democratic protest. Let me make a plain, direct statement: The trucker protest was not an attempted coup. It was not a rebellion. It was not an assault on Canada's democracy. It was none of those things. The convoy protest was strong and present, but it was unthreatening and largely non-violent. It was superbly Canadian. It should not be slandered. And it surely should not be used as some sort of example of anti-democratic forces by the leader of the country in which it took place. Most especially when he goes about the world delivering passionate defences of the idea of democracy itself. To defend democracy, you should adhere to its principles. Don't go to Brussels to preach what you skip over in Ottawa. Some examples:

Second 'black box' found in China Eastern plane crash
The two recorders should help investigators determine what caused the plane to plummet from 29,000 feet and into a forested mountainside, killing all 132 people on board. The second "black box" has been recovered from the crash of a China Eastern Boeing 737-800 that killed all 132 people on board last week, Chinese state media said Sunday. Firefighters taking part in the search found therecorder, an orange cylinder, on a mountain slope about 5 feet underground, state broadcaster CCTV said. Experts confirmed it was the second black box. The impact of the crash scattered debris widely and created a 65-foot-deep pit in the side of the mountain.

Extreme weather is NOTHING new: Victorian rainfall data reveals the driest year on record was 1855 with widespread flooding in the winter of 1852
Heavy rainfall may be associated with flash floods and the modern-day battle against climate change. But a new study led by the Met Office and the University of Reading shows it's nothing new - in fact, newly recovered data from the Victorian era has 'smashed' current rainfall records. Millions of archived rainfall records dating back nearly 200 years have been 'rescued' by thousands of volunteers during Covid lockdown, as part of the 'Rainfall Rescue' project.

Macron warns against 'escalation' after Biden brands Putin 'butcher'
France's President Emmanuel Macron warned Sunday against a verbal "escalation" of Russia's invasion in Ukraine, after US President Joe Biden branded Vladimir Putin a "butcher" who "cannot remain in power". The Kremlin had reacted in fury over Biden's comments which it said narrows the window for bilateral relations, with Russia's invasion of Ukraine now into a second month. Macron said he would speak to Putin in the next two days to organise the evacuation of civilians from the heavily bombarded port city of Mariupol.

Why US LNG cannot replace Europe's reliance on Russian gas
The United States and European Union on Friday announced a new partnership to reduce the continent's reliance on Russian energy, the start of a years-long initiative to further isolate Moscow after its invasion of Ukraine. As part of the plan, the U.S. and other nations will increase liquified natural gas exports to Europe by 15 billion cubic meters this year, the White House said. Even larger shipments would be delivered in the future. At the same time, they will try to keep their climate goals on track by powering gas infrastructure with clean energy and reducing methane leaks that can worsen global warming. Comment: If green 'clean energy' were an option, they wouldn't need to ship US LNG.

Zelensky suggests Ukraine's Western backers lack courage
Ukraine's president says NATO members won't send him warplanes because they don't have 1% of the bravery shown by Mariupol defenders. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has scolded NATO members for declining to send him warplanes with which to help fight off Russia's military, essentially saying his Western supporters lack sufficient courage. Speaking by video address early on Sunday from Kiev, Zelensky chided his allies for a "ping-pong about who and how should hand over jets and other defensive weapons," adding, "Ukraine can't shoot down Russian missiles with shotguns, machine guns, of which there are too many in the supplies." For instance, he said, to break the Russian siege of Mariupol, Ukraine needs tanks, other armored vehicles, and especially warplanes.

Louisiana Supreme Court rules BLM organizer can be sued by people injured during riot
On Friday, the Lousiana Supreme Court handed down a ruling in which a Baton Rouge police officer will be allowed to proceed with a lawsuit against Black Lives Matter organizer DeRay Mckesson. The police officer, who remains anonymous at the time of this writing, was apparently injured when he was hit with objects by violent protestors while in the process of making an arrest during a riot in 2016. Local news reported that "...the officer, identified in a lawsuit as John Doe instead of by name, claims he was seriously wounded after demonstrators began to 'loot a Circle K' for water bottles," and that "...the demonstration was part of larger demonstrations in the aftermath of the police killing of Alton Sterling."

In an article titled, "Why is Putin Calling the Ukrainian Government a Bunch of Nazis?" the ADL interviewed David Fishman, professor of Jewish History at The Jewish Theological Seminary, to explain why Ukraine's neo-Nazis aren't so bad. "There are neo-Nazis in Ukraine, just as there are in the U.S., and in Russia for that matter. Right now, there are 51 volcanoes actively erupting on the planet. This week's top story regards the Sao Jorge volcano in Portugal, where a shallow intrusion of magma is ongoing. Its alert level was raised three times in a week, and ground deformation and elevated gas levels have been detected. Thus, an eruption might occur in the next few days. Meanwhile in Chile, the alert level at the Lonquimay volcano was raised to yellow due to a swarm of earthquakes underneath its edifice. And, in Hawaii, a large earthquake occurred underneath the flank of Mauna Kea. This video will discuss these volcano related news stories, as told and analyzed by a volcanologist.

US and NATO allies arm neo-Nazi units in Ukraine as foreign policy elites yearn for Afghan-style insurgency
Corporate US media and foreign policy hardliners want to create a new Afghanistan in the middle of Europe by flooding Ukraine with weapons. The arms industry is very pleased. Following urgent requests for arms from the Ukrainian government, at least 32 countries have announced their intention to ship billions of dollars in weapons into Ukraine for use against Russian forces in Ukraine. Photographic evidence shows that these weapons have already ended up in the hands of neo-Nazi paramilitaries - units which have already received training and arms the US and its NATO allies. Underscoring the careless nature of the unprecedented arms shipments, the formerly neutral country of Norway has warned that its government cannot "guarantee that the weapons [it is sending to Ukraine] will not fall into the wrong hands."

Miner backed by US oligarchs Gates & Bezos to start drilling in Greenland
US-based mineral exploration company KoBold Metals said on Thursday it is ready to start drilling for nickel and other raw materials used in electric vehicles, amid skyrocketing prices brought about by Ukraine-related sanctions on Russia. The company secured a 51% stake in the Disko-Nuussuaq project on Greenland's west coast last year, operated by UK-based Bluejay Mining. In their joint venture, the mining firms plan to drill a total of 3,000 meters in 2022 at depths of between 150 to 400 meters to get to where the metals are located. "The objective is to target massive nickel, copper, cobalt and platinum group metals," Bluejay CEO Bo Stensgaard told Reuters. The ambitious project comes as prices for metals, especially nickel, used in electric vehicle batteries more than doubled earlier in March amid Western sanctions imposed on Russia following its military operation in Ukraine. Russia supplies around 10% of the world's nickel needs, as well as 4% of cobalt. It is also the world's...

Ukrainian leftist criticizes West's drive to war with Russia: US is using Ukraine as 'cannon fodder'
A left-wing peace activist raised in Ukraine explains how the US government created the crisis, backing two coups in a decade, fueling a devastating civil war, and exploiting his nation as a proxy against Russia. I am a Ukrainian-American. I grew up and spent over half of my life in Ukraine, although now I live in the United States. I wanted to explain my thoughts on the ongoing crisis with Russia, because mainstream corporate media outlets don't ever share perspectives like mine. It is definitely a stressful time, for obvious reasons. Fortunately, my family and friends in the country are alive and are doing well enough under the circumstances. Unfortunately, in the past decade this isn't the first time I have had to check in on my loved ones there, and for basically the same reasons. This is what I wanted to talk about. You see, the US government has meddled in Ukraine for decades. And the Ukrainian people have suffered because of this.

On Friday, The Daily Mail reported that emails recovered from Hunter Biden's laptop show he helped an infectious disease research company pursue projects in Ukraine. Those emails confirm portions of charges Russia made the previous day that an investment group run by the now-president's son had funded a company conducting research at biological laboratories in Ukraine. While these developments add another scandal to the long list of Biden family dirty laundry, the more urgent concern for the country should be the continuing threat to our national security posed by a compromised President Biden and the possibility that Russia has access to the catalog of compromising material contained on Hunter's laptop.

Ejection nebula of supernova Cassiopeia A does not expand evenly
The inner nebula of the much-studied supernova Cassiopeia A is not moving smoothly outward. This has been discovered by astronomers from the University of Amsterdam and Harvard. The astronomers suspect that the remains have collided with something. Their finding have been accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal. Cassiopeia A is the remnant of an exploded star in the Cassiopeia constellation, about 11,000 light years away from us. Light from the explosion should have reached Earth for the first time around 1670. However, there was too much gas and dust around the star for the explosion to be seen with the naked eye or with the then very basic telescopes. The Cassiopeia A explosion nebula is expanding at an average rate of 4,000 to 6,000 kilometers per second and has a temperature of about 30 million degrees Celsius. The expansion is most likely occurring in gas that was blown out by the star long before the explosion. Cassiopeia A is now about 16 light years across....
