Sample SOP for MS in Mechanical Engineering
The following draft was submitted to one of the Top Universities in Canada for the MS in Mechanical Engineering program. This is only a sample and events and specifics have been modified for the purpose of this sample:

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE FOR MS IN MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

As a Mechanical Engineering undergraduate student with an ardent interest in the industrial work environment, I have learnt the principles of mechanical engineering those are applicable to most machines, tools and processes which naturally widens my scope of learning and research. This has intrigued me to explore the option of pursuing master’s course in Mechanical Engineering from your prestigious University, which I believe will not only supplement my knowledge that I have acquired but also provide me with the best possible platform for the attainment of my future goals. I draw my inspiration towards this field from my mechanical engineer father who serves as a Mechanical Supervisor in a government run organization, National Fertilizers Limited. He was the one who introduced me to machines like Lathe Machine, Gear Cutting Machine, Hydraulic Cutting Machine, Steam Turbines, Compressors etc. and plants like Steam Generation Plant, Ammonia Plant at a very impressionable age. This naturally triggered in me a desire to know more about what happens inside these machines and the reason behind their precise and accurate working. Also, my frequent visits to the industry enabled me to retain as well as enhance my keen interest in the field and thus, influenced me to pursue my undergraduate course in Mechanical Engineering.

Due to my innate interest in the field of Mechanical Engineering and impressive performance in the engineering entrance examination, I secured a seat in this discipline of engineering at the coveted Punjab Technical University, Punjab. My undergraduate major has given me a wide exposure to numerous subjects like Thermodynamics, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, Heat and Mass Transfer, Mechanics, Mechanical Vibrations etc. My under graduation has been a rewarding experience as I got numerous chances to visit industries to gain a close look at the application of mechanics and its related theories. I possess immense quest for knowledge which enabled me to score more than 90% marks in practical labs of all above-mentioned courses. In addition to this, with the increasing role of computers in every field of engineering, I underwent career enhancing certifications like AutoCAD and pro-e which helped me to learn various design aspects.

Owing to my interest in the concepts pertaining to Refrigeration & Air-Conditioning, Thermal & Fluid Sciences, Heat & Mass Transfer, I submitted a project in final year based on Regenerative Braking System for an Electric Bicycle, which works on principle of conservation of energy i.e. converting the heat lost on applying brakes into electrical energy, which was well received and appreciated by department professors and H.O.D as well. The concept for this project is to demonstrate a regenerative braking system on an electric bicycle. The ultimate goal is to use the energy regained from the RBS as an acceleration “boost” on the bicycle. Although the final goal of repurposing the stored energy into an acceleration boost was not achieved, a fully functional electric bicycle with regenerative braking was built. The regenerated power was even stored in a capacitor, so finding an appropriate use for that electricity should not be difficult.

Sample SOP for MS in Electrical Engineering
The following SOP was submitted at a Top University in USA for the Masters in Electrical Engineering Program. This is only a sample. Events, names and specifics may have been modified for the purpose of this sample:

I would not for once venture to suggest that I always knew what I wanted to do. My career aspirations are not childhood dreams but rather a work of consistent absorption of knowledge and learning about the domain. It was all about finding my path and the journey started from my curiosity about semi-conductors. Growing curiosity and a normal penchant for science and especially physics and mathematics saw me opting for Electronics and Communication Engineering. From thence started my understanding of the domain which slowly and gradually grew into admiration and then a strong passion.

Learning about VLSI Design, I knew I wished to make a career within the said domain and decided that I would gain a better understanding by pursuing masters in electrical engineering and becoming an expert within the sector. My humble beginnings offered me modest living amidst strong respect for academic excellence. My grand-father, an English teacher, would often take out time to condition my mind and encourage me to take the path of education. Supported by equally informed parents, I succeeded throughout my school years in every domain. Such has been my journey that on one hand I have the honour of being the captain of the cricket tournament winning school team and on the other, I have the credit of standing first in my school and being applauded for the same. Moving with such a feathered cap, my graduation year was bound to have an illustrious tenure and as promised, it was.

Choosing Electronics and Communication Engineering was by far the wisest decision of my life for the subjects fell in the natural scope of things in my life. I was able to quickly assimilate the information and readily implement the same in a variety of projects. While my performance was excellent in all subjects throughout my graduation, I was effectively fascinated by VLSI design. And due to strong affliction for VLSI design, I have done my major projects in this domain. My major project was design and verification of dual port asynchronous RAM using HDLs. The project completed under the mentorship of Mr. XYZ received excellent appreciations and a “Bravo” from the organization, further instilling in me the confidence to keep working in the domain.

Sample Statement of Purpose (SOP) for MS in Civil Engineering
This Sample has been submitted for the MS in Civil Engineering at one of the top universities in USA. The contents may have been modified to suit the purpose:

Statement of Purpose for MS in Civil Engineering

After three and half years of undergraduate study in Civil Engineering, I feel completely satisfied with my decision to choose engineering as my career option as it has revealed the most pragmatic and down-to-earth approach to tackling human problems to me. My enthusiasm coupled with scope for innovations and opportunities available in the field of Civil Engineering has motivated me to opt for higher studies and contribute to the field through meaningful research. I sincerely believe that pursuing graduation at XXX University at this juncture of my career will be an ideal step in this direction.

My decision to major in Civil Engineering is a direct result of my desire to contribute to the development of state-of-the-art infrastructure in my country, aiming towards improving its global standing. Foundation of this lies in my childhood admiration of my father, a civil engineer who I frequently accompanied for his site visits. Each time I visited the site and witnessed the machines and related processes, my excitement and inquisitiveness knew no bounds. My desire to pursue my MS in Civil Engineering stems from the gradual accumulation of theories and naïve practical applications of the observed concepts during the site visits.

During my under graduation in Civil Engineering at GLA Institute of Technology, Mathura, I gained my initial formal exposure to Construction Management through courses like “Building and Construction Material” and “Design of Buildings”, which opened my eyes to the latest construction technology and management methods. The course in “Construction Management” highlighted the importance of effective team coordination for project execution in quality construction practice and exposed me to plethora of applications of Operations Research in Project Management.

In the third year of my under graduation, I received in-depth practical knowledge during the six-month industrial training during which, I was a part of a commercial building project for DLF. Here, I took upon the task of performing a study of testing of materials procured for mix design and design of reinforced concrete structures. Also I had the opportunity to visit and learn about surveying. In addition, I was exposed to the various aspects of Construction Engineering and Management and interacted with the engineers involved with futuristic activities that thoroughly inspired me and reinforced my decision to pursue my graduate study in this field.
