I have always been passionate about the fundamental principles of how the world works and see that engineering has been responsible for some of the greatest innovations of mankind. It is the usage of the application of physics with engineering principles which rules the world and inventions. These foundational opinions have driven my interest to pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering. To achieve this goal, I studied relentlessly in high school and for the nationwide university entrance exam. I was able to rank in the upper percentile in the entrance exam which made me among the best students who entered into University of Tehran’s Mechanical Engineering department.
During my undergraduate program, I took various courses which closely aligned with my research interest and dealt with heat transfer and fluid mechanics. After completing many courses, I realized how practical and essential the knowledge of optimization and computational methods is for any student who pursues new things in heat transfer or fluid mechanics. These methods are powerful instruments. After taking related courses, I was fascinated by evolutionary methods like Genetic Algorithm and other modern techniques such as Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). Solving inverse problems with these methods was a new approach for me in reference to problem modeling.
In the third year of my studies, I designed a battery thermal management system. This is a comprehensive example that I could utilize my thermal, fluid, and CFD knowledge simultaneously. I obtained valuable experience as a junior research scientist at the Environment Research Institute which includes fluid modeling, simulation with Finite Element Method (FEM), and conducted optimized design of the elements in a battery pack. This work has been presented in the most prominent international conferences.
I have done five different projects in the last two semesters. In each project, I collaborated with other students in a team and was a group leader in the majority of these projects. These projects were executed through courses such as Optimization of Thermal Systems, Gas Turbine and Jet Propulsion, and Automatic Control. We carried out three optimization projects in which we had to draw on our own knowledge and experience to solve open-ended problems.
In two projects, which took us two months to finish, there were times we had to work without much guidance since the projects were about inverse heat transfer. This was difficult as this course is taught separately in the graduate program. Our persistence and forward thinking paid off as our work was selected as the best project and our team obtained the top score.
Along with projects, due to my excellent academic performance, I had been selected as a teacher assistant in “Dynamics” and “Thermodynamics I” courses while at the university of Tehran. To compare, usually graduate students are considered and qualified for this task. I believe that these experiences have prepared me to deal with difficult and unprecedented situations.
Since I have been looking forward to studying graduate program in my research interests’ area, I have prepared myself for graduate studies. My goal is to develop my skills. To achieve this goal, I took a course called “Turbomachinery” and consequentially became involved in a project to design a piping network of a cooling system for the hybrid electric bus. In this project, pump sizing was done and validated with simulation software. This work complemented my internship at Pardis Energy Company where I improved my knowledge of piping design. Working with PDMS software led to an increase in my skill and proficiency in the oil, gas, and petrochemical industries. This internship was really an eye-opening experience for me to prepare for this field of study.

In my final days of my undergraduate study, I had to complete a project in my area related to my research interests. In this project, I had made numerical simulations for convective heat transfer of turbulent and laminar flows in pipes with different shapes. I learned a lot about turbulence models and convective heat transfer. With this said, I would like to focus on this area and since I like new technologies and science in my field of study, I am very open to new opportunities.
To clearly express my goals, I believe that in order to play an effective role in this competitive world, one should specialize in a specific field. Therefore, I made my strong decision to pursue what I have learnt until now in order to make use of my knowledge efficiently. I think that my knowledge is not profound enough yet and I should study for a graduate degree to do anything significant in my interested area.
As a future perspective, I would like to be a university professor with a holistic and innovative approach to research works. This hope cannot be fulfilled without strong research background which entails a meticulous research in the graduate period. According to my advisors and my own inquiry, New York University provides me with such a competitive atmosphere for research and study. Due to the equipped laboratories and cutting-edge research in a variety of areas, your Mechanical Engineering program has been recognized for its excellence in research.
The history of New York University is full of honors and great achievements of professors who dedicated their lives to science. I wish to be considered for a Graduate Research Assistantship under the direction of prodigious professors like Ponta, Abdolhalik, and Egorova in the mentioned research interests. I intend to pursue my area of study at a well-established university. Therefore, outstanding opportunities at your university encouraged me to apply to this university so as to experience a new world of which I would be proud.
