Pope Francis presided over the annual “24 Hours for the Lord” Lenten penitential service in St. Peter’s Basilica on Friday evening [25 March 2022], as the Church marked the feast of the Annunciation.

Toward the end of the liturgy, the Pope prayed the Act of Consecration of humanity, especially of Russia and Ukraine, to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

He prayed the Act in communion with all Catholic Bishops across the globe, as the Papal Almoner, Cardinal Konrad Krajewski, did the same at the Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima, in Portugal.

The Pope’s renewal of the Consecration came in response to the war in Ukraine and at the request of the Blessed Virgin Mary made in an apparition at Fatima on 13 July 1917.

As is known, on July 13, 1917, the Virgin Mary at Fatima reportedly requested the consecration of Russia to her Immaculate Heart. John Paul II consecrated the world to Mary on several occasions, and Sister Lucia, one of the seers of Fatima, personally confirmed that the act performed by him on March 25, 1984, corresponded to the Virgin’s request.

But the Polish Pope was not the first pontiff to carry out such an act. Before him, Pius XII consecrated the church and the human race to the Immaculate Heart of Mary (radio message Oct. 31, 1942), and, 10 years later, he specifically consecrated Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary (Apostolic letter Sacro vergente anno from July 7, 1952).

Many bishops, too, have carried out and continue to carry out the act of consecration of their people to Mary in times of difficulty and suffering. The Lebanese episcopate, for example, consecrated Lebanon on March 25, 2017, in Fatima, and at the same shrine 24 countries were consecrated to the Virgin on March 25, 2020, just as Cardinal Krajewski will perform the same act in Fatima on March 25 at the same time as the pope in the Vatican.

The agency allows the manufacturers to test individual ingredients instead of the finished product. If multiple ingredients contain high levels of heavy metals but individually do not surpass the FDA’s heavy metal limits, they can still be combined together in the final product. The final product may contain dangerous levels of heavy metals, but the product is ultimately sold to consumers because the individual ingredients were not considered a threat. The FDA is currently implementing new standards called “Closer to Zero: Action Plan for Baby Foods.”

Taal Volcano, which sits in a lake south of Manila, exploded with a "short-lived" burst at 7:22 am (2322 GMT), the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said in a statement.

The initial eruption was followed by "nearly continuous phreatomagmatic activity" that sent plumes stretching 1,500 metres (4,900 feet) into the air. 

A phreatomagmatic eruption happens when molten rock comes into contact with underground or surface water, said Princess Cosalan, a scientist at the agency, likening it to pouring "water on a hot pan".

When caring for garden tools, especially those with wooden handles, it’s important to keep them in good condition.

If your wooden handle doesn’t feel smooth or feels like you may get a splinter, it’s time to show it a little TLC.

Take a piece of sandpaper (100-120 grit) and smooth off the rough outer edge. You only want to take off as much as is necessary. Don’t overdo it!

Once the wood is smooth, you need to protect the wood with oil. We like to use what we have on hand and we have a lot of home-rendered lard. So I heated some lard until it was liquid and rubbed it on generously with a rag. If you don’t have lard or tallow on hand, some mineral oil would also work.

Go back over the handle with a dry cloth and repeat steps two and three as many times as needed until the wooden handle has absorbed as much oil as it will hold.

The oil may be a bit tacky until it dries completely, so be sure to condition your tools a day or two before you’ll need them (ideally, conditioning your tools at the end of the gardening season is preferred).

On tools with moving parts like clippers and shears, keep them clean and oil them a couple of times a season.

Make sure and clean the working end of your tools periodically and you can even oil them if you really want to keep the metal in better shape.

Lastly, while I don’t do this well, sharpening your shovels, hoes, spades and any tool with an edge will make your work much easier. You can do this with a simple metal file!
