EF2 Elgin Texas tornado flips truck captured in storm chaser video | AccuWeather

Sensational video of a red pickup truck's remarkable encounter with a powerful tornado in Texas went viral on Tuesday and now the teenager who was driving it has described what it was like.

A young truck driver in Elgin, Texas, accidentally was treated to the ride of his life after he drove directly through the funnel of a damaging EF2 tornado on Monday.

Just before crossing the road, the tornado destroyed a mobile home, injuring one and sending debris and dust from the house up into the air and across the highway. As the twister churned toward the highway, little was in its path other than a lone red truck and its driver.

The truck, a red 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, was quickly enveloped by the twisting winds of the tornado as it crossed the highway in front of storm chaser Brian Emfinger.

As power lines in the path of the tornado sparked and buckled due to the high winds, the truck was shoved over onto its side. With the truck fully on its side, the winds managed to spin the vehicle a full 360 before somehow flipping the truck back onto all four wheels, all while whipping around large debris from the mobile home, trees and power lines.

The driver, 16-year-old Riley Leon, sounded cool and collected as he recounted the astounding moment on Wednesday morning.

“I wasn’t scared like that much,” Leon said, according to Good Morning America. “But, yeah, it was, like, a shocking moment for me.”

Fellow driver Ruben Briones, who later helped the driver, also said Leon was “in shock” after the event. Briones told KXAN that Leon, who is from Manor, left the damaged truck in Elgin.

Photos of the pummeled vehicle show just how viciously the tornado impacted the truck. Dozens of scratches and dents blanket the entire driver side of the red truck, while a basketball-sized indentation sits just behind the backseat door.

The driver, whom Emfinger estimated to be a 16- to 17-year-old boy, kept driving down the road after the unbelievably close encounter with the tornado. Emfinger did stop the truck and give the boy his phone so that he could call his parents, according to reporting from the Fort-Worth Star Telegram.

THE THERMOSPHERE IS HEATING UP: Solar Cycle 25 is intensifying--and Earth's upper atmosphere is responding.

"The Thermosphere Climate Index (TCI) is going up rapidly right now," reports Linda Hunt of Science Systems and Applications, Inc. "It has nearly tripled in the past year."

TCI is a number published daily by NASA, which tells us how hot Earth's upper atmosphere is. The thermosphere, our atmosphere's highest layer, literally touches space and is a sort of "first responder" to solar activity. Hunt created this plot showing how TCI has unfolded during the last 7 solar cycles. Solar Cycle 25 (shown in blue) is just getting started:

"So far Solar Cycle 25 is well ahead of the pace of Solar Cycle 24," notes Hunt. If this trend continues, the thermosphere could soon hit a 20-year high in temperature.

Before we go any farther, a word of caution: This does not mean Earth is about to heat up. The thermosphere is hundreds of kilometers above our heads. Here on the planet's surface we do not feel its heat; summer days are no warmer when TCI is "hot." As Dr. Marty Mlynczak of NASA notes, "energy driving the climate system near Earth's surface is hundreds of thousands of times greater than in the thermosphere." As far as we know, cyclical warming and cooling of the thermosphere by the solar cycle does not affect climate.

Nevertheless, the thermosphere is important. When it heats up, as it is doing now, it also puffs up. Think of a marshmallow held over a campfire. The thermosphere can expand upward so much it actually touches Earth-orbiting satellites. Almost 40 Starlink satellites fell out of the sky earlier this year as a result of aerodynamic drag up there.

TCI might also have some predictive value. Hunt's plot shows that the index is on an upward trajectory that most closely mimics Solar Cycle 20, which peaked back in the 1970s. Solar Cycle 20 was an above average solar cycle with plenty of solar activity. Coincidentally, a new prediction for Solar Cycle 25 based on the arrival of the Termination Event suggests the same thing: 25 could be the new 20. If this turns out to be true, Solar Cycle 25 would be stronger than its immediate predecessor, weak Solar Cycle 24.

False alarm of a US nuclear first attack was detected by a Soviet military analyst who helped evade a nuclear war.

It was September 28, 1983, when Lieutenant Colonel Petrov – a lanky, 44-year-old military analyst with the Soviet Air Defence Forces – started his night shift. He was chief duty officer at a military command centre 100km west of Moscow.

It was 15 minutes after midnight when the sirens at the Champignon on that September night went on.

“One, two, five rockets. When there is more than two, the computer called it a nuclear missile attack,” Petrov recalled.

He had to confirm the attack on the phone and push the red panic button that would trigger alarms throughout Soviet missile installations.

Tens of thousands of military officers and soldiers would have to get ready and target their missiles and wait for a command from Andropov.

But the satellite signal did not detect “tails”, or visible traces of flying missiles. The scope of the attack also seemed illogical – the US would not start a nuclear annihilation of the USSR with just five missiles, Petrov thought.

Meanwhile, Soviet ground-based radars didn’t detect any signals – and he decided the system had malfunctioned.

“I understood the signal was wrong and yelled, ‘False alarm! False alarm!'” he said. “I made a decision not to believe the computer.”

On 26 September 1983, the computers in the Serpukhov-15 bunker outside Moscow, which housed the command center of the Soviet early warning satellite system, twice reported that U.S. intercontinental ballistic missiles were heading toward the Soviet Union.

Stanislav Petrov, who was duty officer that night, suspected that the system was malfunctioning and managed to convince his superiors of the same thing. He argued that if the U.S. was going to attack pre-emptively it would do so with more than just five missiles and that it was best to wait for ground radar confirmation before launching a counter-attack.
