The Lorica of Saint Patrick

We have previously posted the Lorica of Saint Patrick, an Orthodox Celtic prayer written by the great Enlightener of Ireland himself. We did not, however, provide the context to the prayer.
Far from merely being flowery language, the image of a lorica or breastplate, a piece of armor, had a real and immediate meaning. When Saint Patrick wrote this prayer in 433 he and his followers were on mission in Ireland which was at this time still pagan. Because of his preaching against the idols of the pagans Saint Patrick upset many, some to such an extent that they made designs on his life and on those of his companions. Knowing of the danger he faced, Patrick wrote this prayer and alongside those with him recited it daily, daily putting on the spiritual lorica to protect themselves from the daggers of the pagans.

The first sharp image from NASA's James Webb Space Telescope captured a stunningly clear photo of a twinkling star roughly more than 2,000 light-years away from Earth.

The photo, released on Wednesday, shows the distant Milky Way star located in deep space about 2,000 light-years away in the Ursa Major constellation. Experts have designated the star as 2MASS J17554042+6551277. At this distance, light that was emitted by the star 2,000 years ago is just now reaching Earth, giving earthlings a close-up glimpse of what the star looked like around the time Julius Ceasar reigned and Jesus Christ walked the Earth.

2MASS J17554042+6551277 is about 2,000 light-years away and well within our own galaxy. But the galaxies scattered across the background of the Webb telescope alignment evaluation image are likely billions of light-years distant, far beyond the Milky Way.

While the purpose of this image was to focus on the bright star at the center for alignment evaluation, Webb's optics and NIRCam are so sensitive that the galaxies and stars seen in the background show up. At this stage of Webb’s mirror alignment, known as “fine phasing,” each of the primary mirror segments have been adjusted to produce one unified image of the same star using only the NIRCam instrument. This image of the star, which is called 2MASS J17554042+6551277, uses a red filter to optimize visual contrast.

"It looks like the apocalypse," says Coy. "The atmospheric phenomenon will go down in history as the largest incursion into the Iberian Peninsula since record-keeping began. In the image, you can see the city of Elda under a dense blanket of sand, and on the crest of the mountain a person observing."

The gritty dust comes from the Sahara desert in Africa. This animation from Europe's Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service shows a massive plume covering Spain on March 15th before dispersing into northern Europe:

Plumes of Sahara dust drift over Europe multiple times each year, but this week's event is exceptional. In Spain the air was choked with coarse particulate matter (PM10). Dust has coated European ski slopes and glaciers, hastening seasonal melts, and hazy skies are being reported as far north as Poland and Germany.

"Although the cloud of Sahara sand is not as dense here in Poland as in the more southern countries, it turned last night's full Moon a deep red," reports Marek Nikodem who photographed the moonrise near Szubin, Poland:
