The Alpine nation of nine million people was one of the few countries in the world to make jabs against the coronavirus compulsory for all adults.

THIS RED ARC IS NOT AN AURORA: All day long on March 5th, a solar wind stream buffeted Earth's magnetic field. When night fell in Banff, Alberta, photographer Marybeth Kiczenski took her camera to the countryside to look for auroras. She found this instead:

SARs may look like auroras, but they not the same. Auroras appear when charged particles rain down from space, hitting the atmosphere and causing it to glow like the picture tube of an old color TV. SARs form differently. They are a sign of heat energy leaking into the upper atmosphere from Earth’s ring current system.

The ring current is a donut-shaped circuit carrying millions of amps around our planet. It skims the orbits of geosynchronous satellites and plays a huge role in determining the severity of geomagnetic storms. Earth is the only rocky planet that has one.

If you want to photograph an SAR, you have to catch the ring current in the act of leaking. This happens during many geomagnetic storms. A G1-class storm was in progress when Kiczenski caught hers. The red arcs have been sighted as far south as Texas.

SARs are among the reddest things in the sky, with a monochromatic glow at 6300 Å that comes from atomic oxygen in the upper atmosphere. Unfortunately, the human eye is relatively insensitive to light at this wavelength. SARs are usually so faint that no one notices when they pass overhead. Cameras catch them easily, though. Pro tip for photographers: Use a 6300 Å filter.

A storm becomes a bomb cyclone or undergoes bombogenesis when the atmospheric pressure at the center of the storm plummets by 0.71 of an inch of mercury or more within 24 hours. This particular storm will likely far exceed that criteria with the central pressure forecast to plummet close to 1 inch of mercury from Friday evening to Saturday evening.

A zone of 6-12 inches of snow is likely to begin in the West Virginia mountains and extend up through the Alleghenies of Pennsylvania and central New York with a band of 12-18 inches (30-45 cm) of snow predicted across northern New York state and northern New England through the Eastern Townships of Quebec. It is within this heaviest snow band and perhaps across a few locations farther to the south that the AccuWeather Local StormMax™ of 24 inches (60 cm) is most likely to occur.

Both sides of the storm will pack strong winds. Gusts of 40-60 mph will occur over a large part of the eastern third of the nation from Friday night into Saturday night.

The strongest gusts will develop in severe thunderstorms in the southeastern corner of the nation and in portions of the coastal mid-Atlantic and New England, where AccuWeather Local StormMax™ gusts can reach between 80 and 90 mph. Winds this strong can knock down trees or break off tree limbs and cause extensive power outages and property damage.

The risk of coastal flooding associated with southerly and southeasterly winds will be brief due to the storm on Saturday. However, as powerful winds from the west and northwest kick in due to the rapid strengthening storm, a phenomenon known as blowout tides can occur. In this case, the strong winds will push ocean and bay waters seaward. Small craft and large vessels could run the risk of striking bottom in the shoals of coastal waterways from Saturday night into Sunday.

Explanation: Want to see a rainbow smile? Look near the zenith (straight up) when the sun is low in the sky and you might. This example of an ice halo known as a circumzenithal arc was captured above a palm tree top from Ragusa, Sicily on February 24. The vividly colorful arcs are often called smiling rainbows because of their upside down curvature and colors. For circumzenithal arcs the zenith is at the center and red is on the outside, compared to rainbows whose arcs bend toward the horizon after a downpour. True rainbows are formed by water droplets refracting the sunlight to produce a spectrum of colors, though. Circumzenithal arcs are the product of refraction and reflection in flat hexagonal ice crystals, like the ice crystals that create sundogs, formed in high thin clouds.

This CME is the result of a long duration C2-class solar flare near sunspot AR2962. Normally, C-class flares are not considered to be strong. However, this one lasted nearly 12 hours, allowing it to pump plenty of energy into the CME.

Moderately-strong G2-class geomagnetic storms are possible when the CME arrives. NOAA analysts are modeling this CME now, and improved predictions may be available soon. Stay tuned.

The coldest low so far goes to Peter Sinks, Utah — no real surprises there; however, the ferocity of the freeze is noteworthy. A reading of -48.5F (-44.7C) was registered at the sinkhole yesterday, according to the Utah Climate Center’s official website. “This is a remarkable value for mid-March,” writes @ThierryGooseBC on Twitter, and one that is only 3.5F off the Lower-48’s all-time coldest March temperature on record (the 52F set at Middle Sink, Utah on March 10, 2002).
