Sappho was a Greek poetess from the Island of Lesbos who lived around the 7th or 6th century BC. The modern day LGBT community claims her as a sort of patron saint, a lesbian poetess who wrote with much ardour about the beauty of women. This, however, is far from the image history and her own writings portray of her. According to Homer, her contemporary, she had nine children, and a surviving fragment from her poetry speaks of how delightful she finds one daughter of hers, called Cleis. What little survives of her poetry seems to be about Sappho yearning for a man or even rejecting one on the basis of age difference. Her opponents of the time claimed she was a promiscuous woman who really got around, while Meander, who lived 200 years around her death, alleged that she had commited suicide after being rejected by a man she loved.

There is a complete poem of Sappho where she allegedly called upon the Goddess Aphrodite to make a girl had unrequited love for fall for the poetess, but in ancient Greek, third-person singular verbs can refer to both men and women. Much of her poetry was dedicated to heterosexual marriage, the bride and the bridegroom, their happiness etc. She often lamented at the tragic fate of women, at how unworthy men tricked them, but she also sang to the beauty of how the man's love for a woman makes the world go round

The Anglo-Saxon holy day of Mōdraniht "Mother's night" was said by Bede to have been a pagan holiday on the night before Xmas, but since pagans didn't keep a Christian calendar, most interpret that to mean on the night before winter solstice, which this year falls on Sunday night.
Rudolf Simek says that Mōdraniht "as a Germanic sacrificial festival should be associated with the Matron cult of the West Germanic peoples on the one hand, and to the dísablót and the Disting already known from medieval Scandinavia on the other hand and is chronologically to be seen as a connecting link between these Germanic forms of cult."
Dísablót was a Norse blot held for female deities called disir. Mōdraniht was not a celebration of women or mothers in general, but rather of primordial clan mothers, that is divinised progenitors who all the kinsmen held in common. The Gregorian new year is a magical turn over because it is observed by so many people, and it is engrained in a society you are affected by. There is a lot of emotion put into the Gregorian calendar, and unless and until that changes on a large scale, it will have an affect on you. If you were to operated under a different calendar system, then there would be a magical turn over for the new year of that calendar as well (or instead, depending on if it were a replacement or simply an additional observance).

Warriordom, Honor and Courage

For most of recorded history, and even entering into the modern day, it has been considered a great honor for a family to have one of their sons serving in war, or in the military in general. Even today quite a few families put the photographs of their service member children or forebears on display for everyone to see who enters their home. Just as it is today, in the ancient world it was a great honor for a member of one’s family, tribe, or clan to serve with distinction in some sort of armed conflict.

War and conflict are considered paramount to the progression of the cycles. There are Gods who are war deities; they guide the warriors in battle and grant them strength and determination to endure the hardships which armed conflict forces men through.

There are many different roles people must fulfill in any society to make it safe and complete, but few are as honorable and revered as that of the men who decide to take up arms against any and all who would harm their way of life, their home, or their friends and family.

Some schools of thought believe that the ultimate transformation happens to men who are cast into war, where they will experience events that will make them into the best they could possibly be, forging them into men of iron. For the people who follow this philosophy, espoused by great thinkers like Ernst Jünger, there is no higher calling and no greater honor than to be a man at arms, fighting for what he believes in.

Review of 'Teutonic Religion' by Kveldulf Gundarsson

'This is a very good book and should be read directly after going through the Germanic Reading list. The book is well written and an effective way of translating your knowledge of Germanic theology into active practice. However, there are a few criticisms I am going to post about this work in particular. These criticisms should not detract from the whole of the book since they are very isolated and small.

1. He claims that Snorri Sturluson was Christian. This is false and he does not back this claim up with anything.

2. Chapter 10, section: "Where Monsters Lurk" is out of place and is political nonsense.

3. Chapter 12, section: "The Oath Ring" unfortunately does not go heavily into the use of swearing upon a ring. Likewise it does not include practical application. The rest of this chapter is very good.'
