PJM Interconnection prepares for a 70 GW surge

The power grid operator PJM Interconnection has officially asked federal regulators at FERC to launch a new auction plan to secure extra electricity. This move is a direct response to the massive energy demands of AI data centers, which are projected to spike demand by 70 GW by 2038. ⚠️

This "backstop" auction acts as a safety net to prevent blackouts when demand jumps faster than the current grid can handle. The current system was built for a slower, more predictable increase in residential power use, but the arrival of AI infrastructure is changing the math entirely.

The plan forces new safeguards into place:
▪️ It requires states to prove they will shield regular families from paying the costs for new data center infrastructure.
▪️ It creates a fast-track procurement process to get new generators connected to the grid sooner.
▪️ It establishes a temporary fix to maintain reliability while long-term construction projects clear the approval process.

Unlike traditional grid expansions that relied on modest, steady residential growth, this new auction prepares for immediate, high-intensity loads that could otherwise crash existing supply chains without these strict cost protections.

The grid is now in a race to build capacity before the AI boom creates local shortages. Expect state leaders to begin pushing back on who bears the financial burden for this rapid, industrial-scale expansion.

The era of passive grid management is officially over.

OpenAI to Build a 3.2-gigawatt Data Center in Georgia

Georgia Power, a subsidiary of Southern Co., has signed a 25-year agreement to supply electricity to a new 3.2-gigawatt data center for OpenAI. The facility, which is set to begin operations in 2028, will be located in Effingham County near Savannah, Georgia.

This project is a key addition to Southern Co.'s portfolio, which has seen its total contracted large power load grow to 17 GW since early 2026. To maintain grid reliability, the contract includes 1,000 megawatts of flexible demand response. This allows the utility to reduce power delivery to the site during periods of peak demand, a provision the company has not previously established with a data center customer.

The project represents an investment of $20 billion. Unlike typical industrial developments where local utilities must fund infrastructure upgrades, OpenAI has agreed to cover the full cost of the necessary electric work, which is intended to protect other customers from potential rate increases.

The facility can draw as much electricity as a small city, unless the grid needs it back.

China targets 2.8 TW of green energy capacity 🔋

China is shifting its national energy strategy to prioritize battery storage to keep its power grid stable. The new five-year plan explicitly targets 2.8 terawatts of wind and solar capacity by 2030.

Integrating batteries is essential for reliability. Solar panels and wind turbines are inconsistent—the sun doesn't always shine and the wind doesn't always blow. "Grid-forming technology" works like a shock absorber for the power supply, keeping electricity flowing smoothly so the system remains stable. This update introduces new market-based revenue mechanisms, allowing producers to earn money more flexibly instead of just relying on rigid state contracts.

This approach marks a major departure from earlier strategies that focused almost entirely on raw installation counts. While older plans treated storage as an optional add-on, this new policy treats batteries as a core component, much like how modern electric vehicle manufacturers now integrate advanced software directly into the powertrain for better efficiency. 📈

Upgrading the infrastructure of an entire nation is a monumental feat of engineering. It’s a massive logistical undertaking, but at the end of the day, it's just about making sure your devices stay charged.

Reliability is the ultimate goal.

US District Court Ends Wind Farm Freeze in Oregon

The United States District Court for the District of Oregon has ruled that the military cannot indefinitely block new renewable energy projects. This order effectively ends the de facto moratorium that had paralyzed onshore wind development across the country.

For months, the Department of Defense had simply refused to perform routine military evaluations for proposed wind farms. Without these assessments, developers were trapped in a legal limbo where projects could not be formally denied, but they could not be approved either. By forcing the agency to resume these reviews, the court is clearing a major bottleneck just as electricity demand across the grid is spiking. ⚖️

This situation reveals a deep contradiction in current energy policy. While this court order forces the government to stop blocking wind power, the administration recently paid RWE $1.22 billion specifically to cancel three major offshore wind projects and pivot to liquid natural gas. This leaves the industry navigating court-ordered approvals on one side and massive payouts to stop construction on the other. 📉

It is a confusing battle where the legal system is trying to force progress, while heavy financial incentives encourage companies to turn back. 💸

Green energy is currently fighting a war on two fronts.

Morocco Launches Africa's First Battery Gigafactory

🚀 Good news for the electric car market. Morocco has officially opened the continent's very first battery manufacturing plant. The massive facility is operated by the Chinese firm Gotion High-Tech to supply the booming electric vehicle market.

What does this mean for ordinary drivers? The factory specializes in lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) technology. Think of it like the battery in your smartphone, but much tougher—it handles heat better, lasts longer, and is much safer.

Here is what makes this plant so important:
▫️ It has an initial capacity of 10 gigawatt-hours, enough to power around 200,000 cars a year.
▫️ It uses a "cathode-to-cell" process, building batteries from raw materials to finished cells under one roof.
▫️ The factory focuses specifically on the regional automotive market.

To put this in perspective, while Tesla dominates the United States with its massive gigafactories, this new plant gives Morocco its own competitive foothold. It places the region on the global map of green technology.

It is impressive to see North Africa transition from simple assembly lines to building the actual hearts of modern electric vehicles. They are truly charging ahead.

Plugging in for the long haul.

Ford unveils the Fathom, an electric pickup for $28,350

Ford is finally bringing a truly affordable electric pickup to the market with its new Fathom. The vehicle is set to launch next year with a starting price of $28,350, completely skipping the need for federal tax credits to keep costs down. 🚀

This is the first vehicle built on the company's new Universal EV Platform. This architecture is specifically engineered to strip out the manufacturing complexity that usually drives up the price of electric cars, without sacrificing the features drivers actually want.

The company is aiming to deliver low-cost electric mobility by building this truck on a new platform assembled in an innovative way.

This positions the Fathom as a direct rival to the Slate Truck. While the Slate Truck starts at a lower price point of roughly $24,000, it achieves that by stripping away nearly all niceties, including paint. Ford clearly believes that offering a fully featured truck for just a bit more money will be the more attractive choice for most buyers.

It looks like the fight for the budget-friendly EV segment is heating up.

Practicality finally gets a real price tag.

Lockheed Martin X-62A executes 27 autonomous intercepts

The Lockheed Martin X-62A experimental fighter jet recently completed 27 autonomous flight intercepts at Edwards Air Force Base. This test confirms that artificial intelligence can now track and maneuver against a live airborne target without any pilot intervention.

During the HAVE HEAT program, the aircraft used live data from an infrared Legion Pod sensor. Across eight flights, the AI calculated flight paths and steered the jet to intercept a T-38 trainer aircraft. It essentially performed tactical maneuvers that normally require a human to stay constantly locked in.

Older simulation tests were limited to synthetic environments, but the X-62A platform is designed to handle the complex, unpredictable physics of real-world flight. It bridges the gap between basic automation and true, independent tactical flying.

Seeing this technology handle high-speed aerial combat is an engineering milestone, though it really comes down to a computer learning to chase another plane.
The cockpit is changing for good.

Hydrogen turbine runs with 0 compressors

Researchers have successfully generated electricity using a hydrogen-powered turbine that operates with 0 mechanical compressors. By using detonation waves to build pressure, this system provides a simpler and more efficient way to generate power for clean energy and aviation. 🚀

This new design replaces the traditional, heavy mechanical components that have been standard in turbine engines for decades. While typical turbines rely on rotating blades to squeeze air into the combustion chamber, this detonation-based approach skips that complex step. It uses controlled, rapid explosions to build pressure directly within the engine itself.

This shift away from heavy compressors is reminiscent of the early days of aviation, when the industry moved from external piston engines to the much more compact, high-speed turbine engines we use today. Just as that earlier transition fundamentally changed how we power flight, this move toward detonation-based systems invites us to reconsider the necessity of the complex machinery we currently take for granted.

Efficiency often hides in the simplest possible design.

Security Breach at Leipzig/Halle Airport

A drone rigged with explosives was found near an Antonov An-124 at Leipzig/Halle airport, highlighting a frightening new vulnerability for European infrastructure. 🚨

The incident has sent shockwaves through the aviation industry, proving that threats are not just limited to the skies. While we often think of airport security as focused on large-scale threats, this event shows how easily a small, cheap drone can bypass traditional defenses.

The situation escalated through a series of concerning events:
Experts successfully neutralized the explosive device located next to the transport aircraft before it could detonate.
A DHL freighter collided with an unidentified object during a forced missed approach shortly after the discovery.
Leipzig/Halle currently serves as a vital logistics hub for NATO and DHL operations, making it a high-value target.

This tactic mirrors the Spiderweb operations in Ukraine, where small drones targeted parked military bombers. It also recalls the destruction of the Hostomel base, which previously served as the main hub for Antonov Airlines before being lost in the conflict, forcing them to relocate their operations to Germany.

The era of relying solely on perimeter fences for safety is officially over.

AI Designs New Life Forms to Target Bacteria

Researchers at Stanford and the Arc Institute have successfully created 16 working viral genomes using artificial intelligence. This marks a shift in synthetic biology: instead of modifying existing organisms, the team generated entirely new, functional viruses from scratch. They tested 285 digital designs, and these 16 survivors proved capable of surviving outside the computer and effectively targeting bacteria like E. coli. 🧬

The team used genomic models called Evo 1 and Evo 2. You can think of them like ChatGPT, but for DNA. While a language model learns to predict the next word in a sentence, these models learned the patterns of genetic sequences to write new, functional DNA code.

The experiment showed that some of these AI-generated bacteriophages were actually better at neutralizing E. coli than the natural viruses used as a baseline for comparison.

Most traditional synthetic biology projects involve stitching together known pieces of DNA, a process that is often slow and limited by existing biological templates. By letting Evo 1 and Evo 2 generate entirely new codes, the researchers created viruses that had never existed in nature, with some containing nearly 400 mutations compared to their closest natural relatives. This capability suggests we are moving into an era where we can design biological solutions to specific problems, rather than just waiting for nature to provide them. 🧪

The line between computer code and living code is getting very thin.

Envision Group Powers Up 12.8 GWh Battery Cluster

Envision Group has completed the final integration of its AI-driven management system into a massive battery storage network in Inner Mongolia, hitting a total capacity of 12.8 GWh.

This project acts like a giant, intelligent battery pack for the local power grid. It balances electricity supply and demand in real-time, ensuring that power remains stable even when using unpredictable energy sources like wind or solar. The AI system handles complex tasks that would be impossible for humans to manage manually at this scale.

Key features of this deployment include:
▫️ It utilizes "grid-forming" technology to instantly stabilize the electricity flow across the network.
▫️ The station passed all grid verification tests by executing three full charge-and-discharge cycles flawlessly.
▫️ The AI constantly learns and adjusts dispatch schedules to optimize electricity trading in the local spot market.
▫️ The system architecture coordinates three distinct levels: the physical equipment, the system software, and the entire site management.

This cluster functions on a much larger scale than the standalone 4 GWh flagship plant that serves as its core unit. By automating the grid connection and management processes, it significantly shortens the time required to bring such massive storage assets online compared to traditional, less automated power facilities.

Building a more reliable energy grid has never been this smart.
