Bank of Jamaica completes first CBDC pilot.
The Bank of Jamaica initially partnered with the Irish cryptography firm eCurrency Mint for its CBDC project in March 2021.
The Bank of Jamaica (BoJ) has successfully completed its f central bank digital currency (CBDC), targeting a national rollout in the first quarter of 2022.
After proceeding with initial CBDC prototype testing in March 2021, Jamaica’s central bank finished an eight-month-long pilot last Friday, the Jamaica Information Service reported.
As part of the pilot, the BoJ minted 230 million Jamaican dollars (JMD) ($1.5 million) worth of the CBDC for issuance to deposit-taking institutions and authorized payment service providers on Aug. 9, 2021.
The central bank then issued 1 million JMD ($6,500) worth of digital currency to the staff at BoJ’s banking department. On Oct. 29, the bank also issued 5 million JMD ($32,000) worth of CBDC to the National Commercial Bank (NCB), one of the largest financial institutions in Jamaica.
According to the report, the NCB was the first wallet provider in Jamaica’s CBDC pilot, onboarding 57 customers, including four small merchants and 53 consumers. Customers were able to conduct person-to-person, cash-in and cash-out transactions at an NCB-sponsored event in December 2021.
The BoJ now plans to proceed with a nationwide rollout in Q1 2022, expecting to add two new wallet providers. These providers have already been conducting virtual simulation testing and will be able to order CBDC from BoJ and then distribute it to their customers. The central bank also plans to focus on interoperability by testing transactions between customers of different wallet providers, the report notes.

UK lawmakers form crypto advocacy group for parliament: Report.
“We are at a crucial time for the sector as global policymakers are also now reviewing their approach to crypto and how it should be regulated,” said the group's chairperson and MP Lisa Cameron.
Lisa Cameron, a member of parliament for the United Kingdom’s House of Commons, is reportedly chairing a lobbying group aimed at promoting crypto-related legislation in government.
According to a Friday report from the Financial Times, members of parliament, as well as members of the House of Lords in the United Kingdom, launched the Crypto and Digital Assets Group to ensure rules for the crypto industry in the U.K. “support innovation” as of last week. The cross-party group aims to protect investors from financial crimes, including token scams or offerings from regulated companies.
“We are at a crucial time for the sector as global policymakers are also now reviewing their approach to crypto and how it should be regulated,” said Cameron.
The country’s self-regulating trade group for the crypto industry, CryptoUK, reportedly backed the creation of the advocacy group. According to CryptoUK executive director Ian Taylor, the group intends to spend more than $67,000 in 2022 to support the Crypto and Digital Assets Group, with a focus on “education, education, education” around crypto assets.
In 2021, the U.K. Financial Conduct Authority issued numerous warnings to retail investors, advising them of the potential risk in dealing with crypto firms not yet registered with the country’s financial watchdog. The U.K. Advertising Standards Authority, the country’s independent advertising regulator, also removed advertisements from crypto firms including Coinbase and Kraken.
The seemingly growing concern over crypto scams and illicit transactions in the U.K. comes as a report from Chainalysis showed scammers received $7.8 billion in crypto stolen from victims over 2021, of which more than $2.8 billion came from rug pulls. Chainalysis attributed the prevalence of rug pulls to the “hype around the space” in addition to the lack of code audits for certain DeFi projects.

Bahrain is the latest nation to explore blockchain technology by American investment bank JPMorgan, with the country’s central bank trialing JPMorgan’s proprietary digital currency.
The Central Bank of Bahrain (CBB) has successfully completed a digital payments test in collaboration with JPMorgan’s blockchain and cryptocurrency unit Onyx, according to an official announcement published on Thursday.
The trial involved two other major institutions, Manama-based international bank Bank ABC and Bahrain national aluminum smelter Aluminium Bahrain, also known as Alba. The test enabled Bank ABC to settle real-time payments to Alba’s counterparts in the United States using JPM Coin, a blockchain-based payments system and stablecoin pegged to the United States dollar.
According to the announcement, the CBB was responsible for supervising the trial.
CBB governor Rasheed Al Maraj said that the trial has been crucial for the government of Bahrain to address and potentially eliminate existing inefficiencies in the traditional cross-border payments industry.
“We are pleased to announce the success of this test, which is in line with our vision and strategy to develop and enrich the capabilities provided to stakeholders in the financial services sector in the Kingdom using emerging and pioneering technologies,” Al Maraj said.
The CBB previously disclosed plans to test out JPM Coin in May 2021, stating that the trial could potentially extend to its central bank digital currency development.

Bitcoin News: El Salvador’s BTC Sees An Erosion Of Values Worth $12 Million In Public Funds
El Salvador was the first nation that had decreed that Bitcoin was a legal currency. However, the move has not been very successful in the country, and things are turning to worse in 2022 with the value of BTC tanking. BTC saw an overall decline of 17.5% over a few weeks.
The bitcoins held by the Salvadoran government would be worth $59 million.If a recent calculation by Bloomberg is believed, El Salvador’s fling with BTC has resulted in more monetary losses than profits.
According to President Nayib Bukele’s Twitter posts, the nation holds approximately 1,391 bitcoins.

Uruguay reportedly installs its first Bitcoin ATM.
Uruguay’s first crypto ATM has been installed in the coastal city of Punta del Este, a major tourist attraction in the region.
Uruguay has reportedly installed its first Bitcoin (BTC) ATM, making it the 11th South American country to publicly encourage crypto adoption. Prior to Uruguay’s involvement, South America hosted 79 ATMs, which represented 0.2% of global BTC ATM installations.
According to Ámbito, Uruguay’s first crypto ATM was installed in the coastal city of Punta del Este, a major tourist attraction in the region. Uruguay’s first Bitcoin ATM was developed and installed in partnership with two local crypto companies — URUBit and inBierto.
The crypto ATM in Uruguay currently supports withdrawal and deposits of five cryptocurrencies, namely — BTC, Binance Coin (BNB), Binance USD (BUSD), Ferret Token (FRT) and Urubit (URUB). FRT and URUB are in-house cryptocurrencies managed and distributed by URUBit and inBierto respectively.
Adolfo Varela, the CEO of inBierto, confirmed that the initiative was 100% funded by the government of Uruguay. inBierto is a crypto investment platform, who is also a member of the Uruguayan Chamber of Fintech (Cámara Uruguaya de Fintech), a startup accelerator focused on the fintech sector. URUBit is a decentralized token created in Uruguay and deployed in the Binance Smart Chain (BSC).
Data from Coin ATM Radar shows that Colombia leads the South American market with 31 crypto ATM installations to date, who is followed by Brazil and Argentina at 22 and 11 installations respectively.
Other South American countries such as Ecuador, Venezuela, Aruba and Saint Kits and Nevis have also installed one crypto ATM.
inBierto has not yet responded to Cointelegraph's request for comment.
Last year, an Uruguayan senator introduced a draft bill seeking to regulate cryptocurrency and enable businesses to accept crypto payments.
As Cointelegraph reported, senator Juan Sartori was not keen on adopting crypto as a legal tender. Instead, he suggested:
“Today we present a bill that seeks to establish a legitimate, legal and safe use in businesses related to the production and commercialization of virtual currencies in Uruguay.”
