We are deeply saddened to share the news that our dear friend and colleague, Denis Nikolaevich Akhapkin, passed away on April 16, 2025.
A brief illness claimed the life of an exceptional teacher, scholar, and a man of rare generosity, intellect, and character.
Denis joined Smolny in 2004, and from his very first days became an integral part of our community. In addition to his courses in cognitive studies, he immediately began teaching his now-legendary course on the poetry of Joseph Brodsky, as well as the seminar Writing and Thinking—a course that would come to define the spirit of Smolny itself. Thanks to his vision and dedication, the Writing and Thinking program became a cornerstone of our educational approach, strengthening the bond between Smolny and its partner institution, Bard College. Denis went on to lead the Writing and Thinking program, and later, the entire general education curriculum. His classes were deeply loved by students, and in 2009, he was named Best Teacher at Smolny by its alumni.
His work and presence were equally valued by colleagues at Bard College—not only as a gifted educator and theorist, but as a thoughtful collaborator and dear friend. He led professional development workshops not just for Smolny and other Russian universities, but also for American educators as a Fellow of Bard’s Institute for Writing and Thinking, where his contributions were widely admired.
From 2013 to 2014, Denis served as Deputy Dean of Smolny, playing a vital role in shaping the partnership between St. Petersburg State University and Bard College. He was one of the key architects of this unique Russian-American educational collaboration.
His bond with Smolny remained unbroken. As recently as this fall, he led an Institute for Writing and Thinking seminar for instructors involved in two projects: Smolny Beyond Borders and the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Sciences (Montenegro).
Denis’s impact on Smolny is immeasurable. We have lost not only a colleague and mentor, but someone who helped shape the very identity of our institution.
We hold his memory in the highest regard.
